4. Chapter 3

Three months, twenty three days and eight hours.

Long enough to remind you that you won’t be getting out of the prison soon.

I had been talking to Francois everyday and made sure that he felt better.

He had been slowly slipping into depression and each day I was trying to pull him back out of the pit he had dug. I wanted him to know that I was there and I will be there for him each and every time he wanted me to.

It was surprising yet wonderful that how Francois’s affection had grown on me. I am now able to say that I am completely in love with him. I know that he is the one. I just hope he feels the same too.

I met up with him again tonight. At the same place where we first met. He looked different. Not like his depressed old self. He was… cheerful and he was glowing. It looked like he never was depressed. I liked the new Francois.

“Monsieur Tussaud.” I gestured a bow and smiled at him.

“Mademoiselle Grosholtz.” He imitated me.

We sat down. It was a dull night but the stars were shining brightly. I wondered how can the stars shine so bright when we had lost our light long time ago. My thoughts were circling around my mind and I started thinking how my family was keeping up with all of this. The only two women in the family were arrested. I missed my brother Wolfgang deeply. He was a year older than me and so I was the closest to him. I really missed everyone. Johann’s silly jokes, Edmund’s intense stares, Curtius’s way of soothing me. I wonder if I’ll ever meet them again.

“What’s on your mind?” Francois asked, bringing me back to reality.

“Oh nothing really. Just thinking about home. I feel homesick.” I sighed.

He took my hand and said, “Marie we will get out of here someday. Just don’t lose hope. I promise to be there with you in every moment of your life.”

I looked in his eyes. They were... different. I don't why but my gut was telling me that something out of the ordinary was going to happen soon.

Then he did the unexpected. Something I had never expected.

“Mademoiselle Grosholtz will you do the honor of being my wife?” He got down on his knee and took my hand.

I breathed heavily. I didn’t know what to do.

“I love you Marie. Please say ‘Yes’.” He smiled.

"You love me?" I said while the tears of joy were blurring my vision.

"Didn't you see it? Marie, I have been in love with you ever since I first saw you. Your smile, your laugh and your little ways of making me feel better. I want to be the one to make you feel better for the rest of your life." Francois said, his eyes never leaving mine.

“Y-yes Francois, I will marry you!” I exclaimed. It was the happiest moment of my life.

And then I knew that we have to allow ourselves to be loved by the people who really love us, the people who really matter. Too much of the time, we are blinded by our own pursuits of people to love us, people that don't even matter, while all that time we waste and the people who do love us have to stand on the sidewalk and watch us beg in the streets! It's time to put an end to this. It's time for us to let ourselves be loved.

I loved Francois and my habit of pushing people away finally came to a stop. Now there was a hope that I can be happy. I also knew that I can make people happy.

We all deserve happiness.

I had made my mind.

I will escape the prison with my mother and Francois and leave all the hurtful memories behind. It is a battle worth fighting.
