Where Did I Go Wrong

the "Inspired By A Song" competition. My story was inspired by the song "How To Save A Life" by The Fray. My story is about a girl (Dawn) struggling to fight depression and her best friend (Caelan) who is trying his hardest to understand her and help her through it. Life is full of ups and downs, some people experience it more than others. But that is why we have to find a way to get through it.
“By letting it go, it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try, the world is beyond winning.” -Lao Tzu

4. Not Innocent

Quickly, I kick the box away from me and jolt up. Caelan is in the room with me, looking at the blood on the floor. He looks up at me with tears in his eyes.

"Dawn, why..."

His voice trails off.

He continues and says-

"You promised me you would stop. I told you to stop. I wish for once that you would listen to me."

His last sentence hits me like a bullet and before I could stop myself, I start to scream in my own defense.

"Caelan! You have no idea what I've been through and you have no right to tell me what to do! I know I promised you, but that doesn't mean that I will stop! I said that I would try my hardest, I really did. But I slipped! I had to! I was so caught up in my own sadness that I had to let go! I had to do what feels right! And what feels right is this!"

I yell as I show him my bloody arm.

"This is my escape! I feel like my problems are bleeding out with each and every cut!"

Caelan is silent for a moment. I would expect him to yell right back at me, but his voice is lower than it was before.

"Dawn, you know what is right, and this is not right."

He steps closer to me and continues-

"What would be right is throwing away those razors. What would be right is doing something else other than harming yourself. What would be right is letting go of the past. I know it would be difficult, but you are stronger than you think. You are strong enough to do everything I just said, and more. Dawn, every night before I go to bed, I pray that you will get better. I never forget to pray for you. I believe that you will get better. And I know that deep inside, you believe that you will get better to."
