Chapter 26 ~ Parker

After a little while Niall left and we spent the night texting. He made me laugh and I love having him as a friend. He makes me laugh so hard, and I almost forgot what that was like. Liam was gone all day and I’m sleeping when he comes home.

When I wake up, the sun isn’t shining into the room like it usually does. Instead, it’s blocked by something, or someone. Make that four someone’s. “Wake uupppp!” Niall softly sings, and when I open one eye I see a guitar in his hands as he gently strums some chords.

“It’s time to wake up,” Harry sings quietly in my ear, and I groan and pull the blanket over my head.

“IT’S TIME TO GET UP, IT’S TIME TO GET UP!” Louis screams and starts jumping up and down at my feet. He stepped on my ankle and twisted it.

“OW! Fuck! LOUIS!” I shouted and shot up, pushed him, and laughed when he toppled to the ground and disappeared from view. Niall’s laugh was silent and Harry wore a wide smile. Zayn held back laughter. I tried to stand up so I could go whack Louis but as soon as I put pressure on my left foot I winced in pain and sunk into the couch. “Shit,” I muttered.

“Sorry,” I heard Louis—who still hadn’t gotten up from the floor—groan in pain. Good.

“Are you okay?” Zayn asked, sitting at the opposite end of the couch and gently picking up my feet and placing them in his lap. My foot had already started to swell. Damn you, Louis Tomlinson.

“Can I get some ice please?” I asked Harry, and he went to get some from the freezer. “Thanks.” I smiled tightly at him before placing it on my foot. Zayn held it there and I winced. Niall sat down on the floor by my head. Louis had gotten up and taken a seat on the chair. I scowled at him and he blushed, giving me an apologetic smile.

“So we were wondering if you want to come to the interview today.” Harry blurted.

I blinked. “What?”

“We’re going to be on the Today show later and you’re welcome to come.” Niall smiled.

"Actually, you have to come. It’s mandatory.” Louis said with sass. I stuck my tongue out at him, making Zayn chuckle.

“I would love to, but I’m kind of handicapped at the moment, thanks to an idiot who thought it would be a good idea to jump on my foot.” I snapped, glaring at Louis.

“Oi! It was an accident!”

I rolled my eyes.

“Please! You have to come.” Harry whined.

“Why?” I asked.

“We want you there.” Niall answered. I smiled at him.

“I can’t walk.” I pointed out. I didn't my foot falling off, I like it where it is.

“I’ll carry you.” Harry said and I started to protest before he scooped me up in his arms and threw me over his shoulder, taking me to the bathroom. “Here, get dressed.” At that moment, Louis put my bag down at my feet and then disappeared down the hall again.

I sighed and started to undress after Harry left the bathroom. I settled for short-shorts and a navy-blue tank top with the words ‘LIVE FREE’ on it. I really needed to go shopping. I was obviously low on money, but I would have to do the best I could. It was difficult getting my clothes on when every time I put pressure on my left foot pain shot up my leg. Hopefully it was just a sprain.

I left my hair down naturally straight and brushed my teeth. Why did the boys want me to come so bad? And where was Liam? I hadn’t spoken to him since that night. He was AWOL and I knew that when we did talk face to face again it would be awkward. For a reason I didn’t know, I thought I could trust him. The way he wanted to hold and comfort me when I broke down caused a wave of security through my body. I had never felt secure with anyone except Garrett.

Even thinking of my older brother made me want to disappear into a black hole. But I put on a smile and opened the door, only to crash into a blonde guy. “Thanks.” I smiled at Niall when he threw my arm over his shoulder and helped me to where Harry was. My phone was in my pocket and I was ready to go.

“Let’s go.” Louis said and we left the apartment.

Harry carried me bridal style. “I like your shoes.” The curly one smiled at me.

“Thanks.” I said looking and my torn and worn out converse sneakers. They were my favorite, and I hated flip flops. My hands were hooked around Harry’s neck and the hairs on the back of his neck tickled my fingers. “What show are you guys going to be on?” I asked. They already told me but I forgot.

“The Today Show.” Zayn answered, and I shook my head. I couldn’t believe I was going to the Today Show with One Direction.

“There you go, love.” Harry smiled at me as he set me in a white van when we got to the parking lot. My foot was still hurting but it was bearable.

The rest of the boys piled in and when Louis sat down next to me I said loudly, “Ow! My foot hurts so much. I sure hope it’s not broken.”

Zayn, Niall and Harry chuckled, and Louis turned to me. “I’m sorry, Parker!” He threw his arms around me and gently picked up my foot and placed it on his lap like Zayn did earlier. Louis took a water bottle from a mini-cooler that was in the back and placed it on my ankle. I sighed in relief.

“Thanks.” I muttered.

“It’s the least I can do.” He shrugged. I nodded.

"Where’s Liam?” I said, asking what I had been wondering all morning. The boys exchanged a look that I couldn’t label. “What?”

“Umm…He’s already at the studio.” Harry answered slowly.

“Okay? What, did he not want to be around me or something?” I questioned. My chest felt heavier at the thought of Liam avoiding me.

"No, that’s not it." Zayn told me. "He just wanted to be early."

"Oh," I said. "He’s weird."

Niall chuckled, but it was fake, I knew. I knew Niall Horan’s real laugh, and that wasn’t it. I gave him a weird look and he looked out the window. The boys were being very strange today. "We’re here." Louis said, and yanked the van door open. Louis stepped out and opened his arms for me. He carried me inside and told me to go sit in the first seat on the far left. He pushed me in that direction. When I protested, he shushed me and walked away. Confused, I took my seat and no one questioned me.

Ten minutes later the show started. "Before the boys perform, we have a special performance from one of the band members himself, Liam Payne."

The crowd screamed and my eyes widened. What? What was going on? This is not normal, it doesn't happen. Liam walked on stage and took a seat on a stool with a single microphone in front of him. Guitar music from the band playing behind him started and I stared at him in awe. What was he doing? Where were the other boys? What was this?

When he started singing he saw me in the crowd, and I knew the song immediately. My heart swelled and I was captivated by Liam’s eyes as they held mine.

When you’re down and troubled, and you need a helping hand. And nothing, oh nothing, is going right.

Close your eyes and think of me, and soon I will be there to brighten up even your darkest night. You just call out my name, and you know where ever I am, I’ll come running. Oh yeah, babe, to see you again.

Was this song about me? Liam seemed so into this song, like he was putting everything he had into it. His voice was so beautiful, like he was meant to sing this song.

Winter, spring, summer or fall all you have to do is call, and I’ll be there yeah, yeah, yeahYou’ve got a friend…

Tears stung my eyes and I knew Liam was singing to me. Why was he doing this? He had told me so many times that I could trust him, talk to him. I never thought it was actually sincere. When people ask you how you’re doing, they don’t want a real answer. But while Liam’s singing this, I feel like he cares.

…Hey, aint it good to know you’ve got a friend? People can be so cold. They’ll hurt you and desert you. Well, they’ll take your soul if you let them, oh yeah, but don’t you let them.

A single tear ran down my cheek and I wiped it away quickly. He was so sweet and caring and no one would ever do this for me. The song ended and while the fans cheered, I got up and ran backstage, forgetting about my ankle. Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry saw me, and wrapped their arms around me. Wordlessly, Harry pointed to where Liam was. He handed his microphone off to someone in the crew and his eyes searched for me. When our eyes met, he gave me a wide smile.

A sob fell from my lips and I ran to him, I ran faster than I ever have before. When I crashed into him, his strong arms locked themselves around my body in a tight embrace. Never in my entire life had I felt more safe, more secure. I was ruining his shirt, but I didn’t care. His hand stroked my hair as he pressed his lips to my head. When I pulled away my eyes were still glossy. I was a mess, but Liam still smiled at me. He cupped my face in his hands.

“That was beautiful.” I said, and he hugged me again.

“I’m glad you liked it.” He chuckled.

“Why did you do it?” I asked.

“I did it because you needed to hear it, and because it’s true.”

I met his brown eyes again. I studied his face, looking for something other than kindness but I couldn’t do it. He was so pure and put others before himself. I didn’t deserve his kindness, not at all.

Before he went back on stage to sing Best Song Ever with the rest of his band he said to me, “I’ll always be here for you.”

And for some reason, as I watched them sing, I knew he was being truthful.
