26. Chapter 25 ~ Liam

Chapter 25 ~ Liam

I wake up early in the morning and leave the apartment before Parker gets up. I need a girl’s opinion. As a guy, I don’t know if I’m out of line here. So I drive to Amabel and Harry’s apartment. I texted Harry when I woke up to see if he was going to be home, but he replied saying he was going out with Louis and Zayn. I hadn’t heard from Niall.

Management said we had today off since they were booking other interviews for us. That was a relief for me, since I needed to talk to Amabel desperately. I laid awake most of the night last night and thought about what Zayn said. His words kept ringing in my head. ‘I see the way you look when you talk about her’. I couldn’t stop thinking of those words while I tossed and turned? Did I fancy Parker? I felt like I’ve known her all my life even though I know very little about her.

I’m protective of her. That’s who I am. I’m protective of my mother and sisters and I want Parker too fell as safe with me as my family does. She is the most damaged person I had ever met, even though the harm wasn’t done directly to her.

That’s how I find myself knocking on Harry and Amabel’s door. The blonde girl opens the door wearing sweatpants and a tank top, her hair gathered on top of her head. “Hey Liam!”

“Did you have classes today?” I asked politely, stepping inside.

“Yeah, I just got back from the U.” She answered, closing the door behind me.

"How’re your classes going?” I sat down on the couch. Amabel is my best friend and I’m honestly curious how her school is coming along. She’s taking classes here in the U.S. since we’ll be here for a long time with the tour spread out. She didn’t want to put off her education. That was something Harry described as “dedicated”.

“Okay, I guess. I find it a little distracting that all the teachers have American accents.” She laughed, and I joined in. It was true. “But on a more serious note, Sociology is kicking my arse and I’m having trouble keeping up.”

“Why don’t you just ask your professor for extra help?” I suggested.

"I did. And he’s tutoring me a little before and after class. Harry keeps wondering where I’m at, no matter how many times I tell him.”

“I think he’s jealous.” I smiled.

A confused look crossed Amabel’s face. “Harry? Jealous? Of my Sociology professor? Why?”

I chuckled. As a girl, of course she wouldn’t see it. “Well, you’re spending more time than usual with him, meaning less time with Harry. How old is your teacher?”

“Twenty three,” she said. I gave her the ‘see?’ look and her eyes widened, and then she burst out laughing. “I think it’s hilarious that Harry’s jealous of my professor. He would never try anything and even if he did, Harry has nothing to worry about.”

“He’s definitely the jealous type,” I chuckled.

“Yes, yes he is.” She agreed.

“Anyways, can we talk?” I asked. She sat down next to me on the couch. “I need your help.” I confessed.

“With what?”

“Parker,” I said, wincing.

Amabel tried to hide her smile. “You fancy her don’t you?”

I shrugged. I honestly didn’t know. “I don’t not fancy her.” I said, unsure of the words coming out of my mouth. “I don’t think I should though.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because she doesn’t like me anyways. She is worried about her brother—which I understand—but I just care about her way too much more than I should. I really want to help her, Amabel.” I ran my hand over my face.

Amabel thought for a second. “Have you told her how you feel?”

“No! No way, I don’t really know how to do that.” I’m not the best at talking to girls. “She would probably dislike me even more if I told her I fancied her.”

“She doesn’t dislike you, Liam.” Amabel said.

“Of course she does!”

Amabel whacked my arm. “Now what would make you think that? You were there for her when she broke down and you saw her in a very vulnerable state. If I were her, I would feel more comfortable around you than anyone else.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Really?”

She nodded, making me feel a little bit better about this whole situation. “Are you going to tell her?”

“I want to. I want to tell her that she can trust me, that I’ll be there for her all the time, ‘cause that’s what I want to do.” I gushed.

Amabel gave me another warm smile. “You’re so sweet Liam. She is lucky to know you.”

"Thanks, Am.” I smiled back. “How do I tell her?” I couldn’t believe I was sitting on my best mate’s couch that he shares with his girlfriend, who is also my best friend, asking for advice on a girl that I like, who wouldn’t like me back in a million years. “Should I wait?”

“You don’t have to tell her you fancy her just yet. Why don’t just start off telling her you’ll be her shoulder to lean on? Girls like that sort of thing.” She laughed a bit.

“They do?” With Danielle, I just asked her out and she said yes right away, and things just sort of took off from there. It was an easy relationship. I didn’t do all the work, meaning I wasn’t the ones planning the dates all the time. It was safe and comfortable. Danielle seemed happy, and I was too, but it wasn’t meant to be. During the last days, or even weeks of our relationship, there was no spark. I didn’t have to fight for what I wanted, because maybe, just maybe, Danielle wasn’t what I wanted.

“Yes, we do. It’s nice to know a guy cares about us.”

“And I care about Parker.” I said, and Amabel nodded.

“Yes, you do. Do you know how you’re going to tell her?”

“No clue.” I said honestly. I wasn’t to come right out and say it, and I certainly wasn’t going to ask her out. That’s the last thing she needs right now.

“Well, tell me why you fancy her at all. That’s the first step.”

“First step to what?” Where was this going?

“First step to telling her how you feel!” She exclaimed.

“Oh no,” I groaned. “What is this?” At my words, Amabel burst out laughing again.

“But seriously, why do you like her?”

I thought about it. “Well, first of all the obvious. She’s strong. After all she’s been through she can still take care of herself—on some level. She handled her whole past incredibly and the fact that she gets up every morning knowing what her parents did is beyond me. She’s sarcastic, and I like the way she rolls her eyes, it makes them a deeper brown somehow. I like the way she snaps at me in the morning. Even after she’s had her coffee she’s still rude. I like the way she treats me like a normal lad even though she’s a fan. It’s nice not having someone screaming at you for a picture all the time. I like how she reads classic books in her free time and how she gets way too invested in a TV show she likes. I like the way she yells at the telly ‘cause of something that happened with one of her favorite characters. And, I love the way she looks unbelievably beautiful no matter what she’s wearing or what time of day it is.” I am out of breath my the time I finish.

“…ohmigod.” Amabel choked out, and I snapped back from my ramble and looked at the blonde girl sitting next to me. “That was so romantic.” She covered her mouth with her hands. I felt my cheeks flush. “I had no idea you felt that way!”

I shrugged.

"You’re in way deeper than you realize, Payne.” She teased, and I shook my head. I wasn’t confessing my undying love for Parker. Was I? I wasn’t there yet and I might not ever be. I could get over this crush anytime.

Suddenly Amabel gasped. When I asked her what was wrong, she answered, “I know what you can do! I know of a way you can express your feelings without scaring her off.”

My eyes widened while I considered it. I didn’t even know what it was but I want Parker to know that I’m here for her. “What is it?”

“You have an interview with the Today show tomorrow right?”

"Yeah…” I trailed off.

"Okay, this is what you’re going to do…”
