Chapter 18 ~ Parker

Before Amabel had come over, I was sitting on the couch staring at my phone. Should I call Garrett? Would he answer? He hadn’t called me since I met him for coffee after the One Direction concert so long ago. He used to call me whenever he could, which was usually when he wasn’t with whoever he was dating. He wouldn’t tell me who he was in a relationship with. I think it was out of fear, but he didn’t know that it didn’t matter to me who he was seeing.

I broke and called him, pacing around the apartment biting my fingernails. Why hadn’t he called me? Did something happen? My lip trembled as it went to voicemail. I hoped everything was okay. The voicemail beeped, telling me to leave a message.

"Hey, Garrett, it's me. I was just calling to see if you're okay. I haven't heard from you in a while and I'm starting to get worried so...call me." I hung up, fighting tears. We used to be so close. But ever since he moved out, things hadn't been the same. If he hadn’t left me, things wouldn’t have been like this. I don’t know how long I waited, but it seemed like a million years before my phone rang. My heart nearly leaped out of my chest when the caller ID read Garrett. “Garrett? Are you okay?”

“Parker, I’m fine. Okay. I can’t talk.”

I brushed my hair behind my ear. “Oh, that’s okay. I can call you tomorrow, and we can maybe meet up and—“

“No, I mean I can’t talk anymore. Don’t call me.” His voice was monotone and had no expression.

I frowned. “What?”

“Don’t call me.”

Tears sprung to my eyes. “Garrett, tell me what’s wrong, we can fix this.”

“No, you can’t. Mom tracked my phone bills and she almost found me. I…I can’t do this. Talking to you… I got a job in Georgia.”

“Please,” I sobbed, “don’t do this. You’re my brother and you’re all I have left.”

“I can’t risk being around them. I’ve moved on and I need to get out of here. I’m sorry. They will use you to find me, and you and I both know that can’t happen.”

The worst part was that he was right. There was no doubt that my parents would use me to track down Garrett. But why would they do that? After all they put him through? Those people were insane and as much as I hated to admit it, I wanted him to make me with him. “I understand.” I choked, my heart breaking more and more by the second.

“I’m sorry, Parker. I hate doing this, but I have to. I’ll be getting a new number, so don’t call this one…Don’t call me at all.” The line clicked.

I sunk to my knees, willing the tears to come out so I could cry and then be done. But they wouldn’t come. I was in shock. My body froze up and I didn’t know what to do. My whole world started crumbling around me. The one person I relied on the most was gone, and he told me not to contact him. I knew he had good reasoning but why did he just leave me here? With our parents? He knew how horrible they were and he just left me! It was like he was the only person that understood me. He was my best friend.

There was a knock on the door, and I blinked a few times before standing and opening it, and waiting for me with a big smile was Amabel. “Hey!” She said but when she saw my state, her smile vanished. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” I lied, “I just didn’t sleep well last night.”

“Oh. Well I was wondering if you wanted to hang out today! We can go see a film or go shopping?” She asked, stepping inside and closing the door behind her. She was so blind, not seeing that while she was smiling and living a wonderful life, mine was breaking with every breath I took.

I sighed. “I’m not really up for anything, Am.” I said, plopping down on the couch.

She pouted. “Then we can stay in if you want.”

I bit my lip, and then nodded. I wanted to be alone right now, but I couldn’t find myself to ask her to leave. She was just too nice. We were just catching up when the door opened and Liam walked in. I heard Amabel ask Liam how a meeting went —I didn’t really notice he was gone— and then Liam told us he needed us to go with him.

“Why?” I asked, frowning. I didn’t really want to go anywhere. My brother just dropped a bomb on me and I wasn’t in the mood for socializing.

Liam smiled widely, and I scowled. “It’s a surpise.”

Amabel got up and started zipping up her boots. “You know I hate those.” She muttered.

“Are you coming?” Liam asked me. I hadn’t gotten up from where I was sitting, my own thoughts distracting me.

I pondered it. It was both go out and try to forget about all this shit or stay here and drown in it. I chose the first option, but not nicely. “Fine,” I snapped. “I hope this is a good surprise.”

And with that, we left the apartment, with Liam and Amabel discussing how great the surprise was going to be. If only they knew how much I was hurting.

“Liam, what are we doing at Harry’s apartment?” Amabel whined. The whole ride here she was pestering Liam with questions, but he stood his ground and didn’t tell her a single thing. Wow, Amabel must really hate surprises.

“Just come with me.” He commanded, and the three of us got out of the car and silently went to Harry’s apartment. Liam knocked twice. “We’re here.” He called, and then the door swung open to reveal a smiling Harry Styles.

“Hey guys!” He cheered, and Amabel kissed him sweetly.  “What’s going on?” She asked, and Harry laughed.

“I have someone I want you to meet.” He said, and opened the door wider. There, on the couch, next to Zayn, Niall, Louis and Liam was…someone I didn’t know. But Amabel sure knew who he was because her eyes widened and she started to hyperventilate.

“Oh…my…God…It’s fucking Ed Sheeran!” She screamed, and all the boys cracked up. The guy named Ed stood up and she ran over to him, throwing her arms around him, telling him how amazing he is. He thanked her, and they all sat down, Amabel never taking her eyes off the red-head. I had no clue who he was, but I assumed he was a singer.

“Hey! Parker! Come over here!” Niall called, and I realized I hadn’t moved from where I had first entered the apartment.

Without saying anything, I came and sat next to Liam. “Parker, do you like Ed’s music?” Am asked.

I fumbled with my fingers, and then made eye contact with the blonde girl. “I’m actually not familiar with Ed.” I cringed, and winced when Amabel exploded.

What?” She spit. “Ed Sheeran is only the greatest singer-songwriter of this generation. His music inspires me and it’s bloody amazing.”

I looked at Ed, and saw he was looking extremely uncomfortable. I felt bad for him for all that Amabel was saying right in front of him. “Hey, Am, slow down. Keep it cool, babe.” Harry soothed in her ear, comfortingly rubbing her skin from her shoulders to her elbows.

"I actually brought my guitar. I could play a little something if you’d like.” Ed offered after he cleared his throat.

Amabel gasped. “That would be so great! Please, I’m beginning you.” Everyone laughed at her words. I had to admit, it was amusing to see her fangirling.

“What song?” Ed picked up his guitar and was casually strumming a few chords.

Kiss Me!” Amabel requested immediately. "No! U.N.I.! No, Kiss Me. Do Kiss Me."

Harry chuckled. “It’s her favorite.” he explained for her. Amabel couldn’t stop smiling, and I sat back, prepared for Ed’s performance.

As it turns out, Ed is fantastic. His song has so much meaning I almost cry, but I don’t let anyone see me. The lads smile and Amabel starts crying. Her tears are from the song and lyrics or from the fact that her favorite singer is singing her favorite song three feet from her. Either way, it’s great and when it’s over, I smile.

“That was great. Are you working on anything new?” I asked.

“Somewhat. I’ve got some ideas floating around in my head but nothing is inspiring me yet.” Ed smiled at me, and I smiled back. He was very talented.

“Thanks so much babe!” Amabel cried and threw her arms around Harry’s neck. He chuckled and hugged her back even tighter. Why was Harry such a great boyfriend? Just seeing them together made me jealous. I was never loved like that. No one ever loved me for me; it was always for different reasons.

Liam shot me a smile, but I couldn’t return it. If only he knew.
