Just Friends

"So," I smiled as I sat at the cafeteria table, in front of the new kid, Niall. I set my tray of food on the table. "have you made any friends yet?" He nodded. "That's good." I said picking up my apple and taking a bite out of it.
"What's his name?" I continued the conversation.
"He's coming to eat with us." He said, "You'll see."
I frowned confused, okay...
"Oh! There he is!" Niall said gesturing to a guy coming towards us. I turned around but as soon as I saw who it was I flashed my head back towards Niall.
"You're kidding me right?" I one hand on my forehead staring at the table. "Niall, you can't be friends with him he's-"
I was cut off by the guy sitting beside me on the bench of the table. "trouble." I finished under my breath as he and Niall did some kind of handshake.
"Hey there Brooke, haven't seen you in awhile." He winked at me.
"Hello Zayn..." I said coldly as I inched away from him on the bench.

2. (2) The New Kid

I knocked on the classroom door, waiting for the teacher to open up. I heard his heavy footsteps approach and the handle turned. He sighed. “Miss Brooke,” He said opening the door. “you’re late.. again.” I shrugged giving him a cute smile. The class chuckled knowing I always was. “Take a seat will you?” He said gesturing the desks. I nodded and sat in the very back. It was no use sending me to the principal’s office since, well for firsts, we got along quite nicely (I didn’t treat him like a principal let’s say) and for seconds, detention didn’t affect me. The lesson went on and I was humming and knocking my books and desk with my pencil making a beat. A few people noticed but didn’t say anything. Riiiiiinnnngg. Everybody got up and headed to their next class. As I walked down the aisles and was about to turn the corner to exit the classroom- “Miss Brooke?”

I stopped in track and turned around. “Yes?” I asked sweetly.

“Would you be so kind as to show this boy to his next class, and the next one, and the-”

“Yeah I got the picture teach, but” I stared at the boy, tilting my head to the side. “Who is he?”

“Why don’t you introduce yourself to him, he’s standing right in front of you.” My teacher said hopelessly. “And call me Mr. James please.”

“Hi my name’s Brooke.” I turned to my teacher. “Now who is he?”

My teacher sighed. “You didn’t even let him introduce himself.”

I rolled my eyes, turning my body to face the boy again. And just stared at him. I gave my teacher a look as if to say Uh, he’s not saying anything, is he ok? Mr. James nudged him.

“Oh, erm, h-hey.” He gave me a nervous smile. “My name’s Niall.”

I studied him. “Okay Niall, who are you?”

He gave me a confused look.

“He’s a new student Brooke.” The teacher, Mr. James said.

“Oh.” I breathed. “Why me?” I said turning towards the teacher, ignoring the fact that Niall was right there listening.

“Brooke. You’re late to every class and detention doesn’t do anything to you, so the least you could do is-”

I snorted. “You think I’d be a good influence for this guy?” I huffed gesturing the immobile Niall.

The teacher tilted his head, realizing the facts. But quickly took a deep breath and messed with my statement. “No, but maybe this guy would be a good influence for you.”

I crossed my arms and mentally glared at my teacher. I’ve been on my own since my best friend and I had a fallout. I’m not a girly girl so me and girls.. we can be friends, okay sure. But I mostly got along with guys. –But I didn’t need anybody right now. “Why don’t you just send me to detention?” I said desperately. I turned to Niall “No offense.” I gave him a genuine smile. He smiled back shyly.

“Brooke.” He warned. “You don’t even attend detention when we make you go!” He put one hand on his desk. “You could at least do this instead.” He quickly turned to Niall. “No offense.” He said guiltily.

Niall just stood there with a shy smile on his face, biting his lip.

Feeling bad about the situation he was in I took his hand, he looked up quickly. What did I do? I thought but shook it off. I dragged him out of the classroom and into our next class, realizing that he must’ve zoned out to the rest of my conversation with Mr. James where he was explaining to me that me and Niall had the same schedule today.
