Just Friends

"So," I smiled as I sat at the cafeteria table, in front of the new kid, Niall. I set my tray of food on the table. "have you made any friends yet?" He nodded. "That's good." I said picking up my apple and taking a bite out of it.
"What's his name?" I continued the conversation.
"He's coming to eat with us." He said, "You'll see."
I frowned confused, okay...
"Oh! There he is!" Niall said gesturing to a guy coming towards us. I turned around but as soon as I saw who it was I flashed my head back towards Niall.
"You're kidding me right?" I one hand on my forehead staring at the table. "Niall, you can't be friends with him he's-"
I was cut off by the guy sitting beside me on the bench of the table. "trouble." I finished under my breath as he and Niall did some kind of handshake.
"Hey there Brooke, haven't seen you in awhile." He winked at me.
"Hello Zayn..." I said coldly as I inched away from him on the bench.

18. (16) I Don’t Really Want To Talk To You

As I was rushing away Niall caught up to me and grabbed my elbow to spin me around. I clenched my jaw.

“Niall I really don’t want to talk to you right now.” He kept his hold on my arm and stared into my eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

I rolled my eyes. “It doesn’t matter.” And started walking again and he followed beside me.

“I just don’t like that you actually got mad at me because I didn’t tell you something no one else knows.” I spilled.

His shot up to mine. “Nobody knows you guys were …” He trailed off probably thinking mentioning the word best friend would upset me.

I shook my head. “Everyone knew that.”

His eyebrows knotted together as he looking at his feet. “Then what is it?”

I glanced over at him for a quick second before returning my gaze straight ahead. I tightened my jacket around myself. “You don’t need to know.”

I saw a flash of disappointment in his face. “Don’t worry about it Ni.” I reassured. We kept walking in silence until I broke it. “Just don’t talk to him about me okay?” I asked focusing  my eyes on him.

He looked into my eyes as if he was hesitating before he finally nodded. “’Course not.” He agreed.

I gave him a small smile before I turned towards the bus stop. “Brooke where you going?”

I turned my head to look at him. “What do you mean?” I frowned. I gestured to the bench beside the bus stop.

He shook his head. “I’ll drive you home.”

I gave a quick glance back to the sign before looking back at him. “Fine.”

We drove in silence seeing as the ride wasn’t very long. He pulled into the driveway and I unbuckled my seat belt. “Thanks for the ride.” I mumbled bending over my knees to pick up my bag.

“Do you think you could ever be friends again?” He blurted out.

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Uh,” I was honestly out of words. No! My mind was screaming but I couldn’t say it, so I shrugged. “Doubt it.” I bit the inside of my cheek and opened the car door.

I gave him a small smile before walking up the steps and entering my house. I watched through the window as he stayed in the driveway a few seconds and finally pulled out.
