1. The Cliff And The Package

*I look over the edge and take a step back. I shake my head fiercely. "No, dad, I-I-I can't."

He places a hand on my shoulder. "You have to, I promise if it doesn't work I will be right behind you."

"No, I am not jumping off the cliff for any reasoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" Great, my dad had just pushed me off the damn cliff. I swear if I live......"OPEN YOUR WINGS!" He yells down at me.

I turn and watch the ground climbing to meet me. I can't. My wings wont open.*

I let out a yell and sit up in bed, panting and covered in a sheet of sweat. I look around. It was hours before the sun rises yet. I wipe at my forehead and sigh. I can't remember the dream, only a sense of falling.

I'm not going to get any more sleep, so I stand and stretch. I rub at my face and yawn. I look behind me, trying to get a glimpse at my wings. I sigh again, still nothing.

I am not human.

I am Kelp. You think of seaweed almost instantly, don't you? Well, I am a Kelpie. Ugh, no, not a thing from water. We are creatures from the sky. We are like dragons, we have wings, but no scales. We instead have very thick skin, like a human. We walk on two legs. We look like humans. We are not human. We are Kelpie.

We have wings and can fly, but not until our wings grow. We get them around age 15. I am 19. We have our 'Sunset Ceremony' at age 20. I am less than a month from my birthday.

Oh, yeah, I am the son of the 'Alpha'.

I sigh again and get on some clothes. I head outside and start to work out. I might as well be strong and fast, even if I can't fly.

"Still nothing?"

"Crist!" I exclaim and almost drop the weights I was working with.

I hear laughter and look around. I see eyes looking at me. I glare at the grey eyes staring at me from the darkness. "Tsk, Tsk, you shouldn't swear. It isn't becoming. Well, for a future leader it isn't."

"Well, it ain't nice to scare the shit out of them either, now is it?" I hear a fake sigh and my friend, Dev, come from the shadows. "Naw, but it doesn't hurt dose it?"

"Yes, especially if I dropped the weights on my foot. So, what are you doing up, Dev?" He shrugs. Dev sits on the next bench and says "I got board, nothing to do around here. Did you dream?" He is the only one, besides our other friend, who knows about my......dreams. I nod, slowly, "Yeah. I need to talk to the Avia." He nods. "She'll be expecting you."

"Yeah, but I don't want to go." I put the weights back and sit up. He grabs me by the shoulder and leads me to the edge of our large compound. He pushes me down the trail. "I'll wait here, and by the time you get back Ignis-Spíritu will be here. She knows everything, so. Go." He gives me a shove for courage.

I walk down hill until I reach the fork in the path. One leads to The Avia, the other, no one has gone down it, ever.

I take time to stop and look down the left path. I feel a tug to go that way. I find myself taking a step towards it. I shake my self and turn around and go to the right. I sigh, always the right.

I knock on the rickety door to the little shack. A light voice calls "Come in, Nepos." I walk in and see Avia pouring tea into two cups. I smile and duck to enter her little cabin.

"Dreams again, Nepos?" I nod and sit down.

"I don't remember anything, other than falling......And cliffs......A feeling of calm...." I take a sip of tea.

"Poor, Nepos, I felt you have the urge to go down the path. We haven't had someone want to go down that path in a great many years." She is saying this calmly but I can see the worry in her eyes.

I shake my head. "Don't worry Avia, I have heard the stories. I know better." She looks up sharply.

"You can't know better with that road." I let out a breath. "Avia, Grandmother, I still don't have my wings. What do I do?"

She looks me over with her all-seeing eyes. "Well, Grandson, Nepos, you don't fly." I shake my head. "But, Avia, I need my wings to fallow in my father's steps....how can I get them?"

She stands creakily. I have never seen her look so old. She steps over to a cabinet, it's locked. She takes the key from a necklace and unlocks it. Taking a wrapped package from it she smiles tiredly at me.

"Well, Nepos," She sits down again. "Their was a prophecy long ago, passed from one Avia to another. When I heard it I scoffed. But, I seem to be the one to finish it. You happen to be the other one to help me." She smiles at me and unwraps the cloth. A Large, glowing, egg-shaped thing sits in the center. Small pin pricks of light flash from it.

"What is it, Avia?" I look closely at it and reach out to touch it's surface. Faster than I thought she could move she grabs my wrist. I look at her. Her eyes are no longer blue, but now black.

"Nepos, Hesitation is Death, Wings are Fight, Only The Flightless Will Hesitate. A Future Awaits You. A Dangerous journey to A Place Close Yet Far. Only Dragons Live. Only Humans Die. A Real Cross Will Carry The Last One Home And Save Us All."

She lets go of my wrist. It is bruised. "Avia?" I ask. Her eyes are blue again. She shakes her head. She looks at the glowing thing.

"Nepos, this is a dragon egg. The last of it's kind. Only one dragon is alive, this was it's mates egg. We have promised to keep it safe until the time has come. The last person to go onto the right path did not have this egg, or any of the powers you do. They had wings. You don't. I believe you are the one to carry the egg to it's father. You are the only one to do this job. Take the egg to the Last Dragon."

I look at her. "Why me, Avia?"

"Because The Dragon Knows All And Choose You." She smiles and nods to a bag by the door. "I prepared that for you. Your dream will not come true. No, you will have wings and a friend. Go alone. I will tell the compound of this. Take the egg and go." She smiled and I stroked the egg. It glowed under my touch.
