Blush

The night before the last day of school my grandpa had done something to me, but I was keeping it quiet because if I had brought it up I know for a fact that we would never get Anthony back. As much as I was hurting I couldn’t do that to my brother, so I kept my mouth shut the secret locked deep in my heart where only two people knew. My grandma and my grandpa… I will keep this secret because its humiliating, I won’t ever tell anyone even when we get Anthony back and I gather up the courage to get Niall’s number I won’t even tell him. It was just that bad, it was that kind of secret that if you told someone they wouldn’t know what to say.

Eleven Years Ago

“Mph, so were are ya’ll dragging me off to now?” I asked my grandparents from the backseat which was literally over stuffed with an ice cooler of food, that they were apparently going to take over to my uncle Sean’s before we headed off to the airport to yet another destination. I clutched onto the light grey leather arm rest as my grandpa took a quick and much unexpected turn. I just faked an amused laugh flicking on ‘are we done yet?’ on the little TV that hung from the ceiling. For the most part everything was normal but only because this of course being the year before everything happened to our family causing us to fall apart. I was sitting there minding my own business while my poor little eight year old body was being squished to death slowly I started to notice I might be coming claustrophobic. The smell of melting ice and bagels wafted from the back seat of the brand new Honda odyssey making me want to puke.

“We’re going to stop by London to check on the offices, Then we’ll be heading to Ireland to go to a wedding.” My grandma said as she turned towards the back facing me while holding her knitting in one hand she had the dreaded black and white checkered zip bag in the other. I quickly nodded my head replying with a ‘oh look we’ve arrived.’ Just so I didn’t have to hold those dreaded cards in my hand for the zillionth time. She turned her head seeing her favorite child, the perfect one who never made mistakes or got hurt by someone else. The one that was the exact opposite of my red-headed fast talking mother, my grandma rushed from the car wrapping her arms around her son and my favorite uncle. I slowly unbuckled myself, pausing the movie I removed myself from the car meeting the cold September air, the sky was still dark due to it being early in the morning about three AM.

“There’s my favorite niece!” my uncle grinned down at me; I let out a small laugh going closer to him for a hug which he gladly accepted.

“I’m so tired Uncle Sean!” I exclaimed as I let out a yawn as I breathed in the cold air that had mixed with his smell. I pulled away going back to the car I fell asleep.

I slowly opened my eyes to see I was in a room I felt someone next to me, startled I turned over to find the sleeping figure of a brown haired boy. I placed my hand on his shoulder moving my arm in a jerking motion causing his body to move back and forth. His eyes slowly opened and I noticed the beautiful blue of them making me fall off the bed.

“Oh my gosh are you ok?” he said climbing over to the edge looking down at me sitting on the floor he had genuine concern on his face. I laughed nervously nodding my head yes as he climbed off the bed.

“What’s your name?” I asked him.

“Niall.” He smiled.

“I’m Lillian but I don’t like my name so you can call me Lilly.”

“Ok Lilly.”

“Where am I? Why am I here? Wait where are my grandparents!” I gushed out making Niall laugh at me.

“You’re in Mullingar, Ireland in my house in my room, you’re here because your grandparents are going to a wedding and thought it’d be best if you stayed here until they got back.” He finished with a smile climbing back into bed, I followed his actions.

“So since you’ll be here for three days you want to get to know each other?” he said with a grin making me nod.

“Let’s start with the basics, age, full name, favorites, family names and number of members, and what we like to do. You first!” I smiled sticking out my pointer finger at him.

“Ok my full name is Niall James Horan, I’m eight years old, my favorite color is  green, I like music, I have one brother a mom and a dad, my brother’s name is Greg my mom’s name is Maura and my dad’s names is Bobby,  and I like singing.” He finished letting out a breath of air.

“Ok my full name is Lillian Ouray Council, I’m also eight, I like green blue and purple, I like music and art, I have four brothers a mom and two dads, one being a stepdad, my brothers names are Spencer Tristen Kieran and Anthony, my mom’s name is Tracy my dad’s name is Brian and my stepdads name is Jamie, I like singing too.”

Nine Years Ago

I haven’t talked to Niall since I met him in Ireland. Don’t get me wrong that all I ever wanted to do was talk to him the night we met we had instantly become best friends and when I left he even went to the airport with us to say goodbye we had even ended up crying. But I couldn’t call him because the last thing I wanted to do was talk to my grandpa. I had recently moved back in with them due to my parents having a custody battle with Anthony involving Jamie’s sister who had taken Anthony. My grandma and my grandpa… I will keep this a secret because it humiliating, I won’t ever tell anyone even when we get Anthony back and I gather up the courage to get Niall’s number I won’t even tell him. It was just that bad, it was that kind of secret that if you told someone they wouldn’t know what to say.

But the thing is I never worked up the courage to get Niall’s number, I didn’t even have the courage to talk around my grandpa. I kept the secret though, not knowing it’d come back to bite me in the ass in nine years time.
