15. Chapter 13

Peyton held Justin's hand as they tried to walk as silently as they could through the old building. They had climbed up and down plenty of staircases to get where they were now. Justin had told her to listen closely, because he'd heard voices. She heard them too, so she'd grabbed his hand as they walked down the hallway.

There was a door at the end of it that swung open. Peyton's whole body tensed up--but it was only Chaz, and he was carrying Ryan bridal style. Peyton relaxed and started to laugh. Justin cracked a smile and Chaz rolled his eyes.

"He can't walk, so I wouldn't be laughing." Chaz eyed Peyton and she immediately stopped giggling. Justin squeezed her hand to tell her that it was fine.

"Why can't he walk?" Peyton was now looking at Ryan's unconscious body as Chaz came to stand next to her. She ran her hand lightly along Ryan's cheek before Chaz answered.

"Dakota snapped something in his neck. He's not paralyzed for good, I don't think."

Peyton's head snapped up. "Dakota?"

Chaz nodded, and Justin's grip on her hand suddenly tightened. Peyton looked up at him. His jaw was tightened and he was staring angrily at Chaz. Chaz raised his eyebrows but said nothing, so Peyton figured that she'd better be the one talking.

"Chaz," She said softly. "I killed Dakota."

"Apparently not." Chaz shifted Ryan in his arms. "Ryan was awake long enough to tell me that you missed."

"I missed? But that gun had those bullets inside of it."

"He must have noticed that you were pointing it at him, and moved out of the way. None of us would've noticed, though. We were all staring at Colton." Chaz said grimly.

Peyton shrugged. "We can kill him."

Suddenly, Justin let go of her hand. She creased her eyebrows together and glanced up at him. He was staring down at her, his eyes dark. He shook his head. "No, we're not going to kill him. We're going to get the hell out of here."

"But, Justin, he's just going to keep bothering us."

"Well I don't want to take the chance of killing him, and then him never actually dying in the first place. It seems to happen to everybody around here!" He whisper-yelled. "Let's just call the police like normal people."

He felt around his back pockets but pulled out nothing. A minute later, Peyton was handing him her new phone, and Ryan was starting to wake up. Chaz set him down on the ground because his arms were starting to hurt and Peyton lightly set him against the wall. He struggled to sit up, but she put a finger to her lips and quietly told him to relax.

"Okay," Justin said, handing Peyton her phone back. "The police are coming, so let's get the hell out of here and wait out front."

Peyton helped Ryan up and Justin let him lean against him for support. She and Justin were on either side of Ryan, and they held hands behind his back, partly because if he fell, they'd be able to catch him, and partly because they wanted to.

They managed to make it all the way back to the front of the building just in time to see the police handcuffing everybody who was involved in the whole thing--except for Dakota. Peyton's heart did a little flip when she saw Max, because he looked so much better than he had during high school.

He was taller now, and his sandy-blonde hair was being blown around by the wind. He winked at her, which made her want to puke and want to be with him again at the same time. She shivered.

She found herself telling the three boys that she'd be right back. Before Justin could protest, she was already running towards Max. She stopped right in front of him and crossed her arms.

"How did you find me again?" She said. "It's been years, and you just show up? That makes no sense."

Max shrugged. "Dakota came up to me and told me that he could help me get rid of you. I mean, I'm still angry."

"Angry about what?! That was a stupid high school relationship, you couldn't possibly want to kill me for it."

He shrugged again. "Well I do."

Peyton glared at him. "You're not going to win. The bad guys always loose. Plus, you're headed to jail. I hope you have fun rotting there."

Max chuckled as a police officer shoved him into his car. Peyton whipped her head around as another voice called her name. It was Justin, and he was calling her over to where they were. She started to move, but someone caught hold of her arm.

"Where are you going, Peyton?"

Peyton slowly turned her head to face Dakota. She looked over at the road, but all of the police cars had vanished. Her heart suddenly dropped into her stomach, and she couldn't speak.

"Too scared to say anything?"

She swallowed and started to back up. Dakota grabbed hold of her arm again and pulled her closer to him. His left arm rested on her shoulder, and in his hand was a gun. She figured that it was pointed at Justin, and that was why he wasn't coming to save her. Dakota pressed his lips to her ear.

"Don't scream, now or ever." He pulled away from her ear and pressed their foreheads together. "Come with me, and Justin won't get hurt."

It took her a moment, but she finally found her voice. "No."

Dakota pulled away suddenly as Peyton kicked him--hard. He fell to the ground, groaning with pain. Justin stepped out from behind her and stalked over to where Dakota was. He twisted his wrist so the gun he was holding clattered to the ground, and then he picked it up and took no hesitation in shooting it toward Dakota's heart.

Justin threw the gun into the street, grabbed Peyton's hand, and they ran. Chaz quickly picked up Ryan again and kept up the pace with them. After what seemed like forever, they all climbed into a car--presumably Chaz's--and Justin started the engine. He looked over his shoulder to make sure he didn't hit any cars as he backed up, and then he sped off down the street.
