5. Awkward Car Rides

The next morning, Sarah was herself again. She acted like nothing happened last night and I wasn't exactly sure how I felt about that.

We got up at 8 in the morning so we could have time to get ready and grab a quick breakfast before Niall came and got us. As promised, he was at my door at 10 am sharp. When he knocked, Sarah was the one to open the door.

"Oh, hi Sarah."

"Come on in. Emily is just getting her bag."

"I'm right here thanks." I rolled my eyes and greeted Niall, giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

"Are you girls ready?"

"Yes sir." I slung my bag over my shoulder and the three of us headed out. I left a note on the mirror for Taylor letting her know that I had left already.

The three of us walked in silence to the parking lot. I could feel my classmates stare as we walked past. It made me a little uncomfortable, but obviously Sarah was enjoying every bit of the attention. Once we got to the car, I let out a deep breath I hadn't realized I was holding. Once I was seated, Niall squeezed my knee in a reassuring manner.

"So..." Sarah tried to fill the silence lingering in the air.

"So how was your night?"

"Umm, fine, I guess. We fell asleep right away." We awkwardly nodded and sat in silence some more. "Why is it like this?"

"Like what?"

"I went a month without seeing either of you guys. Sure I talked to you guys, especially you, Niall, but I don't know, I thought this would be a little different."

"Hopefully this awkwardness will fade away. I promise it'll go back to normal when we meet up with the other lads." He put his arm around me and I leaned in to him.

"Yeah I hope.." I sighed. We continued to ride in silence. This was what I feared the most. That once we saw each other it was going to be different. In a parallel universe, Sarah and I would be laughing and singing at the top of our lungs, Niall would be taking goofy pictures of us and all of us would be having a blast. But that wasn't happening. That wouldn't happen.

I rested my head on Niall's shoulder and shut my eyes, hoping the next hour and a half ahead of us would go by quickly.
