2. Legend

The familiar smell of oak wood, meat cooking in the furnace, and woolen beds wakes Steve. He opens his eyes, groggily trying to make out his surroundings. As his eyes adjusted he saw the bed he was lying on, the furnace in the corner, smoking the meat... at the sight of the smoke, Steve remembered the awful scene of the previous night- the Blaze, the fires, the wounded and fallen villagers... he shook his head.

A sharp rap at the house door brought him back into the present. Brian's face was in the windows of the door, entreating entry. Steve slowly got up and went to the door, letting in his roommate.

"I see you're awake," said Brian.

"How did I get from the well to here?" Steve wondered.

"Eva had her husband carry you. As for me, I've been rushing around, tending to the wounded. I haven't had the time to be here to make sure you're okay, but you look good to me," he replied.

Steve shook his head again. "The monster- it was a Blaze," he said. "Blaze can't leave the Nether."

Worry creased Brian's forehead. "Well, last I checked, we don't live in the Netherlands."

"I know. Unless someone was able to enchant it to be able to leave... but who is powerful enough to do that?"

Brian swallowed hard. "Um... the only gamer I can think of is..." he trailed off. "Well, none."

"Herobrine," said Steve, realizing. "Only he could. But it doesn't make sense-"

Brian looked confused. "Who is this Herobrine guy anyway?"

Steve looked at him. "You're kidding me, right?" then, seeing the blank stare from the villager, he shook his head. "Man, when he attacked you guys, I thought you knew who he was. See, the legend goes that when Ronald Mojang first discovered Minecraft, he had a select few people go out to explore it. Only, it was very dangerous, as they hadn't discovered crafting tables yet. So only three of them survived the first week- and that was Notch, his brother Herobrine, and their dad, Steven. Notch discovered the crafting table, and he shared it with their dad, but they never showed it to Herobrine, because he wasn't around for them to show it to him. So when he found torches, tools, beds, and other things, he was astounded. He demanded to know how they made them, but they didn't tell him because they were so successful that they knew he might ruin it. Well, of course Herobrine didn't like this, so he went off again on his own. He discovered he did have a gift for befriending animals, especially hostile mobs. The only one he didn't trust was creepers, because they blew up so easily. So he gathered an army of mobs- but at this time, only the basic mobs existed- zombies, creepers, skeletons, and spiders. As these mobs began to intermarry (orders of Herobrine, who wanted to see how diverse he could get these monsters- he created things like ghast, blaze, silverfish, squid, and cave spiders. Endermen weren't here at this time, they came later. So he went on a quest, with his huge army of amazing and freakish monsters, and he hunted down his brother and dad. Notch got away and hid himself in a village, but Steven wasn't so lucky. Herobrine was so bent on revenge, he murdered his dad in cold blood. After that, he went insane. His eyes went white and glowed brighter with every villager he slaughtered in attempt to find Notch. But Notch evaded him, and that kept him alive. He thought he had lost him to a TNT accident, so Notch eventually told Mojang that it was safe for new gamers. But later, a few gamers were reported dead, and Herobrine was found to be alive still, murdering innocent gamers in an effort to find Notch, but he didn't ever find him. To this day, they both wander Minecraft, searching for each other, Herobrine to kill Notch, Notch to capture and evict Herobrine from Minecraft, ensuring the safety of the villagers and players." When he had finished, Steve looked at Brian.

"Wow," was all he could say.
