10. Broken Glass

When Steve woke up in the morning, Ginger was already gone. He searched the house for her, but there was nobody. Shrugging, he snagged a couple of foods from the kitchen, a new sword from the chest in the room labeled "Weapon and Tools Storage- danger, keep out". As he was trying to find the sword, he noted that several of the chests were locked. Then he crept into the  housing supplies chest and snagged a bed and a handful of torches. He was just slipping out of the house when he noticed that in a cave a couple hundred blocks away from Ginger's, there was broken glass leading in shards to the cave entrance.

Curiously, Steve followed the glass path to the door. As he followed the glass trail, he noticed the shards were slick and wet, soaked with glossy red liquid. Blood? His heart skipped a beat at the sight of the blood on the glass. He followed the trail into the cave. He gasped at the sight that awaited him. There, in the corner of the cave, was Ginger. But she wasn't just standing there- she was tied to a chair, her body slumped down, unconscious in the chains that held her. She was covered in gashes that looked like someone had smashed a vase on her and it had shattered, cutting bloodying her up in the process.

Steve stifled a gasp as he saw a dark cloaked figure emerge from the shadows. It looked hard at Ginger and held up a torch to reveal her in the darkness. He heard a moan escape her lips, as if she was waking up.

"Where is it? Where?" it hissed.

Ginger coughed weakly, cringing as if even that hurt.

"Well?"

Suddenly, her eyes met Steve's, and they widened. She almost gasped, but it was too painful, so she managed to stop it before the hooded figure could catch on. She moved her head a fraction of a degree, just enough to tell Steve to go away before this got worse.

Steve shook his head. He wasn't just going to watch as the figure took the life out of this player. Silently, he drew his sword. Slipping quietly around the corner and ducking behind a stone, he crept closer and closer to the figure, concealing himself with shadows. Then, as if he was turned on by a switch from "silent mode" to "warrior mode", he attacked.

"ARRRRRRRRRGH!" He grunted loudly as he leaped from his hiding spot and sliced at the villain. "Die!" The guy drew his sword as well- a brand-new iron sword. Steve grimaced as his half-gone stone sword clanged against the stranger's. He rolled back, so none of his body would absorb the majority of the impact of falling back. Jumping up onto his feet, he dodged a strike and sliced at his hand before he could recoil.

The stranger hissed, grabbing at his hand.

Steve seized the opportunity to take another jab at his chest, but the villain dodged it. He struck at Steve, but he wasn't there. His reflexes had him standing on the chair next to Ginger's. Her eyes were as big as saucers, wide in fear.  He was about to slice her chains off, but the villain recovered and tried an attack. Parrying the strike and twisting his sword at the hilt, he managed to disarm the enemy. "HEY!" he protested in a voice like sandpaper on the hot desert sand.

Steve lunged at the guy, taking four good blows at his chest and head. There was a pause, then he exploded into pixels and disappeared with an eerie screech.

He turned to Ginger. Her eyes were full of gratitude and bewilderment. Steve gently removed the gag from her mouth. She coughed, swallowed, then said, "Thank you, Steve," like he had just saved her life. Which, in his opinion, he kind of had.

She looked up into his eyes. Blue, she noted. Like her father's... she lost consciousness, still thinking about his eyes.

Steve smashed the lock off of the chains and slowly unwrapped her. Gathering her up, chains and all, in his arms bridal-style, he carried her to her cave.
