Psychic - I Know

Saskia Walden isn't a freak. She's just...a human thought machine. Does it really matter that Saskia has just become a psychic? Of course not. Apart from the fact that she can't control when a vision will come along. Or whether it will effect herself, or anyone around her. See, nothing freaky at all.

Saskia was sat in the waiting room chair again. She had her head in her hands, and tears that were warm and damp trailed down her cheeks. She could feel snot tickling her nose and she felt all bunged up, but she held it back, only able to think that she could have stopped it.

No, June wasn't dead. But she was in a coma. And who ever put her there, Saskia was going to find, and kill. Even if it meant life behind bars.

Someone patted Saskia's knee, and she looked up. She met a soft, brown eyes, and felt as if she wanted to fall into the arms of Alice, June's mother. She steadied herself, and Saskia could see the worry lining her face. Her mascara had been lightly smudged, but Alice had wiped it well.

'My two favourite girls in hospital in the same week.'

She looked sad and a look of pain crossed her face. It wasn't surprising. Saskia's mum had had that look, too. Saskia sniffed, and fell into Alice's comforting embrace. Alice held her and rocked her, until Saskia's mum walked into the room. She had a face of thunder.

'They won't allow us to visit her! They told me that we'd all have to come back in three days! Never in my life have I experienced that at all. They are so, damn rude.'

A shiver. Oh no. And another. And then one more...

I'm at the bottom of the staircase. I can see it... I see who it is! He looks angry... is that June's ex-boyfriend? Is he the one who did it? Oh no, there he goes... Why can't I do anything? Why can't I move? I need to help her...

Saskia shivered violently before returning to the room. All eyes, every single pair, were on her. Alice held her arm. But she wasn't moving. Neither was anyone else. What the heck...?

'I see you figured it out, then.'

Justin Cleare suddenly stalked through the door. He held his hand up, as if he were controlling something. Was he freezing time?

'You...You did this to June!'

Saskia couldn't think, she was just so angry. Before she could stop it, everything she felt, every question she wanted to ask, came tumbling out like a water fall.

'How did you know I knew it was you? What's going on? Why, Justin? I felt so defenceless. I couldn't help her. Was I seeing the past? Justin, stop freezing everybody!'

It was an inner monologue, but it was all out. Was he controlling that, too?

'Face it, Saskia. You have a power now. When you hit your head on the "rock", it's history was hammered into your head. Who do you think sent you flying? Lord, how did she not figure that out.'

He narrowed his eyes.

'What do you mean, it's history? I don't have the past in my head, I have the future. And I can't believe you'd do that! What was the point in giving me it, anyway. So I could catch you out? That was pretty pointless.'

Justin laughed, but it wasn't cold. It was almost...friendly. But Saskia didn't like that. She didn't like that at all.

'Your the bad guy, and I've just found you out! Surely I should be laughing?'

Justin shook his head.

'I'm not a bad guy. This whole thing with June... I did this to set your power. June and yourself are close, and anyone who you love, as a friend or family member, can be saved from evil. Even if you walk past someone in a street, because you are close to them, you are able to sense if something bad will happen. I did this to set your power. And now there is nothing you can do to stop it. You were born to be this person, Saskia. You can save lives now.'

Saskia thought long and hard.

'How can I save lives if I didn't save June's?'

'June isn't dead. You just need to get used to your power. It's yours to keep.'
