Don't wait until it's too late to tell someone how much you love, how much you care. Because when they're gone, no matter how loud you shout and cry, they won't hear you anymore...

Niall's P.O.V

Taking one look at the doctor's face I know it's going to be bad news. I stand up and walk over. I just want to know how she is.

"Are any of you Ms Doyle's parents or guardians?"

"Her mother is dead and she doesn't know where her father is," Liam informs them. I told him everything. I had to.

"Are any of you related to her?"

 "No. But Niall's her boyfriend."

"That'll have to do, so. Well, she's in intensive care. She has multiple head wounds, her left lung has collapsed and many bones are broken she's in a coma and if she comes out any time soon, we'll have to keep her in an induced coma. We've done everything we can. I'm sorry but she might not make it through. She seems strong at the moment, though, so her chances are sixty - forty in her favour."

I drop onto the seat. Why hadn't I left earlier? Why didn't I listen to Louis from the start? He was right, of course he was. I love her. I would've taken the job too. Why am I such an idiot? The tears I've been holding back for hours finally stream out, obscuring my vision.

"Hey, mate, she might be okay." Josh puts a hand on my shoulder. I lean into him, crying fully. It's times like this that I'm glad to have such good friends.

I walk up to Louis' front door. I'm staying at his house for a while. Everyone's upset. I need to apologise to Louis - to tell him that he was right. But I can't. I don't know why. I just can't.

"Jessica's staying at Harry's house," Louis says. "You can stay in her room." I nod and walk in the direction of the guest room.

It takes me ages to sleep. All I can think of is Claire. I toss and turn, my tears wetting the pillow on each side. When sleep finally comes I'm haunted by nightmares.

We're in a place with no walls. It's all white.

"How could you. Niall!? It's your fault. I'm dead now. You don't care, do you?"

"I do!" I try to shout, to scream but no noise comes out.

"It's all your fault," Claire scoffs. "If you had just listened instead of shouting I wouldn't be dead. We'd still be together."

I reach towards her but as I reach her she fades like mist. Fade Like The Mist. I hear a noise behind me and spin around. Claire's standing there but this time we're in a forest, the leaves turning red, brown, gold. They're falling off the branches and slowly drifting to the ground.

 "They're dying. Like I did."

"I'm sorry. Please! I'm so sorry, Claire! I love you!" Again, no sound comes out.

"You don't. You killed me. It's your fault."

"Niall. Niall, wake up!" Louis' shaking me.

"Claire." I sit up, eyes wide.

"You were screaming. Niall, you're sweating. What happened?"

 "She's dead..."

"No she's not. They'll call if anything happens." He pulls me into a hug. I'm shaking uncontrollably. What will I do if she does die? I know it's my fault. I should never have hesitated at the gate and I should have run faster.

 "Can we see her?"

"In the morning, Niall. They won't let us in now. It's four a.m."

"I won't be able to sleep."

"I'll watch t.v. with you." I can see the fatigue in his eyes, but choose to ignore it. I need someone with me. "What happened with Silver?"

"He's still tied up," I gasp.

"Come on, we have to go feed him." Louis jumps up. I follow him out to the car, remembering the feed chart she put on my phone. It's only the stable that collapsed. The feed room's still intact.

We jump out of the car. Silver looks nervous. I don't know the first thing about horses but I know that he looks nervous. He's sweating and his ears are back. I don't think that's good. His tail down against his legs but when he's with Claire it's always raised slightly.

I untie him and instead of hurting me, he shoves his head into my chest. I gasp but stroke his neck like Claire does. Louis goes to the feed room.

"What are pony nuts?" He calls out. I walk over and point to the bag that says Pony Nuts on it. He mixes up the food and gives it to the big stallion. Silver walks past it and pushes into me, his ears perked slightly.

I stroke his face, wondering why he's suddenly so friendly. Does he know that I tried to help Claire? He lies under the trees and I go to him. He snorts and nudges my leg. I lie down with my head on his shoulder. He puts his head down and closes his eyes. I gently stroke him.

"Niall. Are you going to stay here?" I nod. It's dark still. You can't see anything unless you're up close.

"Yeah. Will you stay too? I don't want to be alone. Louis gets the chair out of the feed room and carries it over. He places it on the grass and settles down. I close my eyes, glad to be taking care of something Claire loves so much.

"You're going to poison him and you know it. If you hurt my baby..." she trails off.

"I won't." Why can't I talk. We're here in the field this time. Silver walks up to Claire and tries to nudge her but his nose goes right through her. His tail goes down again and he goes up on his back legs, turning to me, his eyes blazing with fury.

"Ha should be angry. He loved me and it's your fault I'm gone."

 "I'm so sorry."

"Niall!" It's bright. The morning sun turns the inside of my eyelids red. I turn over and a horse snorts. I jump up, suddenly remembering where I am.

Louis tries to feed Silver last night's feed but the horse ignores him, coming over to me. I stroke him again but my gaze is drawn to the ruined building. The hand gripping my heart tightens.

"We have to go." I walk away so suddenly that Silver jumps.

 "What? He has to eat."

"We have to go, Louis!" I growl. "Don't you see? It's me."

 "What?"

 "It's my fault she's dead."
