Future Gladiator

Seventeen year old Burnet is brutally taken from her home to become the face of the Government Gladitorial Division. Her story will unravel both her past and her future and force her to make decisions with both consequences and rewards. Friends will become enemies and enemies may be the exact opposite of what they appear.

16. Thumb on the Outside

We all run after him and I don’t need to tow the girl behind me like I had expected to. In fact, she runs ahead in front of me and drags me along instead with a huge smile on her face. I really must learn her name but I don’t want to pry.

Sirs runs along beside me, his long legs covering the distance in long and steady strides but his face doesn’t carry a smile. I swear that his eyes flicker towards the girl in front of me but she does not look at him, not even once. I frown but keep on running, the pain from earlier throbbing dully to keep me company. We soon catch up to Bollrocks and skid to a halt in the sand behind him.

Without turning around he addresses us quickly and swiftly, gesturing to the rusted metal gate in front of us that is built into the coliseum wall.

“In there is your amour. You will be fitted and dressed and then you will come out here and we will see if it does its job. Move it.”

He opens the gates and we shuffle inside the dark room. The gates shut with a clang behind us and somebody whimpers in the darkness. Footsteps echo along what I believe are the edges of the room and the sound of someone’s heavy breathing approaches behind me.

I tense and hold my breath as my hair is pushed away from my neck and placed over my shoulder. I can feel myself shaking and my heart and head pound simultaneously, all pain from earlier forgotten. Hot breath tickles my neck in the darkness and I slowly turn my head away in an attempt to move away quietly. I try to move my foot slowly across the sandy floor but I bump into something. It’s only then that I realise that the girl is still in front of me. I release her hand as the breathing becomes heavier on my neck, pushing her slightly away from me. She needs to be out of the way if I’m going to end up trying to fight someone. I’ve never fought anybody before.

I slowly bring my hand up by my side and clench it into a fist, tucking my thumb inside my curled up fingers. I whirl quickly on the spot, my arm just beginning to swing in an arc until it is stopped in its tracks and along with my other arm is pinned  in an iron grip in front of me.

I open my mouth to scream but instead find another hand over my mouth.

“It’s just me, Troja. It’s just me.” He whispers.

For the first time in Troja’s presence I relax. He removes his hand from my mouth and releases my arms, though my hands remain curled up in fists. The lights flicker on and he smiles at me and glances at my fists.

“It’s a good thing I stopped you. Thumbs on the outside of your fist next time, otherwise you’ll only break your thumbs.”

With a smile and wink he places his hands on my shoulders and spins me to look at the room.

My mouth drops open in surprise.
