Like A Whisper...

Alice loves horses. She helps out at her local yard. Her mother and father hate not being able to afford to buy their daughter a horse.
Alice doesn't like school, though she gets good grades. She's not popular, but she's not bullied.
What will happen when her perfectly normal life is turned upside down?

1. Chapter 1

I lead Wonder back to his stable after exercising him. He's going well. He's only four, but he's jumping well over a metre already. His owner, Martha, is extremely pleased with him. I pat his dapple neck, and open his girth. He snuffles my hair as I take the martingale strap off his girth.

"Alice? How did he go?" Mally, the yard owner, asked as I brought the gelding's tack to the tack room.

"He went really well," I smile, putting his saddle in its box. I hang his bridle up, and take Hatter's brown leather tack from his box. All of the liveries have their own box for their tack. "He's jumping out of his skin right now. Martha should bring him to a show soon. Just a small one with small fences. Maybe seventies," I say.

Hatter puts his chestnut head over his door and whinnies. He sniffs his tack and nods his head. I stroke down his white stripe on his head and open the door.

"She's bringing him to the show this Friday. Are you available? You could ride Dairymilk, Hatter, Lily, Lavender and Jack. I could pay you. You'd be grooming too, of course. But not as much. Only Wonder and the horses you're riding. I'm bringing Rice and Carla's bringing Onion in her own trailer."

"Of course I can come," I say, tightening Hatter's girth one more hole. I check him for cuts one more time before leading him out. "What time do I have to be here for?"

"About four. The competition starts at six. We'll need to find a quiet parking space, so we'll have to get there early. It's only in Dundalk, so it's only an hour's drive away. We'll be staying the night. They're all doing the three day event. And Wonder if he takes it well."

"Okay. I'll be here at three. I'll plait all of the horses except Hatter the night before. He always scratches them out. I'll actually plait him at the show. But just in case another horse scratches them out. Is the five o'clock lesson on today?"

"Yep. Will you tack up the school ponies for it?"

"Sure." I love the five o'clock lesson. The girls in it are so funny. They're all younger than me. I'm fourteen.
