Chapter 25

“He’s awake!” I announced on the phone to Ruby’s parents. Ruby was still in Ryder’s room and she asked me to tell her parents to come down as soon as the can.

“What?” Gina gasped.

“Ryder’s finally awake. Ruby was going to call you but she’s still in the room with him so she told me to call you instead.” I told them.

“R-Ryder’s awake?” Gina stammered.

“Yes, Mrs Adams, he’s awake and healthy but he just needs some time to get used to moving around but he’s awake.” I replied.

“How long has he been awake?” She asked.

“About an hour or so.” I answered.

“Oh god.” She gasped then it was silent on the other end for a bit before she yelled out, “Tony! Get Wes, we’re going to London!”

“Mrs Adams, are you driving or should I pick you up from the train station?” I asked.

“Could you pick us up please? The traffic is going to be horrid today. Also, tell Ruby we’re coming and that we need to stay at her place for a few days.” She told me.

“Sure, I’ll let her know.” I told her.

“Thanks for telling us, Liam.” She said.

“No problem. Just give me a ring when you know what time you’ll be here and all the details.” I said and she agreed before we said our goodbyes and hung up. I slowly knocked on Ryder’s closed door and opened it once I heard the muffled, ‘come in.’

Ruby was sat on the bottom of Ryder’s bed and the bed was propped up so that Ryder was now sitting. The doctor came in earlier and he pretty much said the same things as what he said to Elise. That he needs to stay at the hospital for a bit longer, that he needs to go into physical therapy because he’s been immobile for to long and the likes of all that.

“I just called your mum, your whole family’s taking a train here and I’m going to pick them up once they come.” I told the both of them then I turned to Ruby and said, “also your mum said that they’ll be staying with you for a few days.”

Ruby groaned but nodded. “They’re going to be a riot.”

Ryder then cleared his throat at pointedly glanced at Ruby then at me. Somehow, Ruby seemed to understand him before I did, maybe it was the whole twin telepathy that was apparently true. I wouldn’t know, i don’t know any twins apart from Louis’ sisters who I haven’t seen since they were eight years old.

“Oh, right!” Ruby exclaimed. She hopped off the bed and bounced over to me, her smile never wavering as she looked from me to Ryder. “Ryder, this is my boyfriend, Liam. Liam, this is my brother, Ryder.”

“Hello.” I said as I went over and shook his hand.

“Hey.” He said with a nod. “So, they’re all coming?”

I nodded in answer. “Yeah, your mother yelled at your dad to pack their things and Wes’.”

“What about Hannah?” He asked. Who the hell is Hannah? I thought. His eyes studied my face then said with realisation, “you don’t know Hannah.”

I looked to Ruby and she had her bottom lip in between her teeth. Her eyes were darting around the room, not in an avoiding kind of way but more like I’m-trying-not-to-cry way. “Uh... She was mentioned once...” I let my voice hang in the air. I thought Ruby and I were past the whole hidden past thing. But I guess she left out someone important.

“I’m sorry, Liam. I can’t talk about her. Ryder can.” With that she fled the room without another word. I turned to Ryder with a confused look on my face. He sighed and gestured to the chair beside his bed.

“Ruby told me about the two of you and about that fight you had a few weeks ago because she refused to tell you anything about her past. Hannah’s... not exactly her past so it’s not the same. Hannah’s our older sister.” He said. I could feel myself getting more and more confused by the second.

“Hannah’s three years older than Ruby and I. Ruby and her were so close, they weren’t just sisters, they were each other’s best friends. Ruby loved her so much and that’s why she literally can’t talk about this.” Ryder said.

“Is she dead?” I asked. I wasn’t trying to be insensitive, it was just a question because from what I was gathering from his words and by the way he saying them was making me think that she was probably dead.

Ryder shook his head. “No. But she may as well be.”

“What?” I had no idea what was going on.

“See, Hannah was literally the perfect child, the perfect student, the perfect sister, the perfect everything. She wasn’t a bitch at all, she had the purest heart you’d ever seen. But when she turned eighteen, she met a guy on the night of her birthday. Yes, it’s going to start sounding cliché. But this guy, we’ve never met him but she spoke about him all the time. She talked about him like he was a god. But we’ve never met him.

“Ruby always tried to get Hannah to make him meet us, but Hannah always said that the guy wasn’t ready. We didn’t even know his name. I guess that was the first sign of him being off but we never thought about that because she was head over heels for him and it was her first time being head over heels.

“Then her behaviour started to change. It was mild at first. She’d come home late, drunk off her ass or high off her ass. She completely changed her style. She started to drift from Ruby. Then it kept going on and she started to get a little abusive to all of us. She was even worse to Wes. You know how Wes has CAPD, yeah and how Ruby reads him stories? So when we were seventeen and she was twenty, Ruby was reading to Wes one night and Hannah came home late. At this point, our parents turned a blind eye to her, claiming ‘she’s old enough to make her own decisions’ and ‘she hasn’t lived enough before so we can’t stop her living now’ and all that. Anyway, she came home and went straight for Wes’ room and when she saw Ruby reading to him, she laughed off her ass.

“It was mocking at first then she started to yell at Wes for being so imperfect and she acted like it was a disease that could catch. Mind you, when he was diagnosed, Hannah was there for him all the time. Hannah used to love him. So that night, she hit Wes. Just punched him. Ruby yelled at Hannah and if you knew Ruby, you’d know that she never ever yells at anyone. So yeah, Ruby yelled at Hannah and Hannah hit her. First it was just a slap to make Ruby back off so she could continue bashing up our little brother. But you know Ruby, she will always stand up for people. So Ruby tried to make Hannah stop and instead, Hannah started to bash Ruby up.

“I came in a little too late, Ruby was all bruised and jesus, i will never forgive myself for coming late. I pulled Hannah away and my parents kicked her out of the house. Hannah just cackled like a maniac and packed her stuff, saying she’ll just live with her boyfriend. She came back once last year, just to me, I refused to let Ruby see her and Wes but I spoke to her. She told us she was getting married to that guy and that she wanted all of us to be there.

“It was so frustrating when she came, she acted like nothing happened. Like she never abused Wes, like she never beat Ruby bloody. I sent her away because I couldn’t stand to hear her talk about family like she never betrayed us. I would have kept the fact that she was a bride-to-be from Ruby but she was eavesdropping. She wanted to be at the wedding but I don’t want her to go. Hannah doesn’t deserve someone like Ruby in her life, let alone her wedding.” Ryder finished.

I blew out a breath. That was a lot to take in. I remember Ruby mentioning her on that coffee date and she said it so casually that I never thought about it since then. But now that I think back on it, I remember her eyes getting a little glassy before she launched into the story about how Ryder ended up in hospital.

I wished Ruby told me about her, I can’t imagine how my sisters may have looked to her when I first introduced them. If Hannah was a guy, I’d beat her up black and blue for laying a finger on Ruby and Wes. Even though I’m a little frustrated that she never told me, i understand why. When Ruby loves someone, she loves them so unconditionally that she will never forget them no matter what.

I’m surprised she kept hidden, as well as her family. I never saw one photo of her in their house and i’ve been there a couple of times. Well, if she’s dead to them she’s going to be dead to me. Besides, I don’t want to meet the person who beat up my girlfriend.

“I hope she never comes back.” I said after a while. “Because if she does, all my morals of never hitting a girl will come crashing down.”

Ryder gave me an approving smile. “Great! You’re perfect for the job as Ruby’s boyfriend.”

“What?” I asked.

“You know her ex, Michael?” Ryder asked and i had to contain myself from getting too angry at the mention of his name. I don’t care if he’s sorry and that what happened wasn’t exactly what happened, any ex of hers would always make my blood boil. I don’t look like the jealous type but trust me, I get more jealous than the average 20 year old male.

“Yes.” I grunted.

Ryder snorted but didn’t comment on my sudden hostility. “He never knew about Hannah. He acted like he knew every little detail about Ruby but he never knew about Hannah. That’s sort of why I never liked the guy. He acted like he was ‘oh so in love’ with her and claimed he knew everything because he was quote unquote her best friend for a few months. I like you man, you’re better than any asshole she’s ever dated.”

I felt a sense of smugness wash over me and I couldn’t help the smile on my face. “Thanks.”

“Also, whatever you do, Ruby’s going to want to go that wedding so don’t let her. Please. I don’t want her within three miles of that woman, you got it?” He said sternly.

I nodded. “Got it. Besides, I don’t even want them in the same city.”

Ryder grinned. “By far the best.” He praised silently.

Then Ryder turned on the tv that was hanging in the corner of the room just as my phone went off. I checked it to find two new messages, one from Ruby’s mum about the train and the second from Ruby, telling me that she was in Elise’s room and she’ll come back when she’s ready and that she loves me. I grinned at the last three words in her text. No matter how many times she tells me she loves me, I will always smile like a little kid on christmas.

“Wait,” Ryder suddenly said. “Is that you?”

I looked up to find an ad about the tour that was starting in October 2014, next year. “Yeah.”

“You’re in a band?” Ryder asked, shocked. “You’re famous?”

“Yeah.” I replied.

“And Ruby’s okay with that?” He asked.

I nodded. “Yeah, she doesn’t mind it. We didn’t talk about it much but she says as long as my fans don’t stalk her every move she’s okay with it. But she teases me a lot because I’m in a pop boy band with millions of fans around the world, who are mostly twelve year olds, falling at my feet.”

“What tough competition for her.” Ryder snorted. “Oh by the way, if you hurt her, I’ll skin you alive. Got it?”

I laughed slightly. “You have a creative mind.”

“I’m not kidding, Liam. I will skin you alive, then burn you just onto the brink of death, then I’ll cut off your limbs then I’ll bury you just when you’re begging for mercy.”

I literally felt all the colour drain from my face as I imagined his horrific threat. I gulped. “Well, that was graphic. And disturbing.”

“You’re welcome.” Ryder grinned.

For the next half hour we never did anything but watch whatever was on the screen. Ruby came in a bit earlier than I expected. She didn’t say a word, she just looked at me with eyes that read are you mad at me. I just shook my head and grabbed her hand. She sat on my lap and wrapped her arms around my neck and I kissed her cheek.

“I love you.” She murmured.

“I love you.” I replied and kissed her softly. The kiss didn’t last long because Ryder started groaning and gagging like he was going to be sick.

Then I had to go pick up their parents and Wes from the train station. They were all such a mess except for Wes. Wes just acted like he was in his own little world with his ds in his hands. Gina and Tony were carrying duffel bags and Gina looked nervous and worried and scared while Tony just looked expressionless. I told them Ryder was okay and that he’s going to be staying at the hospital for a little longer.

As soon as we got to the hospital, they went straight for his room. They even kicked Ruby out, claiming that she’s had two hours too long with him and it was their turn. Ryder kept whining that they were going to baby him when he didn’t need babying. But Ruby and i just left him alone with them and we walked down to the hospital cafeteria.

“So.. Hannah.” Ruby said as soon as we got our food and sat down. I paused mid-bite, half surprised she was the one who brought her up.

“Yeah.” I replied and I did nothing to hide the slight anger in my tone.

“What do you think?” She asked quietly as her eyes studied my face.

“I think that if she ever tries to contact you again, I will take you to a whole other continent so she doesn’t find you again.” I replied with full honesty. Ruby laughed softly. “I’m being serious.”

“I know.” She smiled.

“Ryder said that Michael never knew about her.” I said.

Ruby shook her head. “No. I didn’t tell him.”

“He also said he never really liked Michael.” I told her without trying to hide the grin on my face.

Ruby rolled her eyes. “Don’t go all smug. Ryder doesn’t like many of my boyfriends.”

“He likes me. He said it himself.” I grinned.

She took a spoonful of her yogurt and smacked on to my face. “Shut up.” She said and took another spoonful into her mouth.

“Ugh, Rubes.” I groaned as I wiped away the yogurt from my cheek. I then grabbed a grape off her tray and threw it at her.

“Liam! You’ll get us kicked out of here!” She said with urgency.

“You started it.” I protested.

“You’re such a baby.” She said and stuck her tongue out at me.

“I’m not the one sticking my tongue out.” I countered.

“Shut up.” She grumbled. I chuckled and kissed her lips. “You’re so gay, Liam.”

“If I was, I’d have a better fashion sense. You know that.” I told her.

She eyed my plaid shirt and my skinny jeans and snorted. “Yeah, if you were gay, you’d know that plaid shirts are so not in.”

“Excuse you, plaid shirts make my biceps stand out. You know that.” I told her. “In fact, you love it.”

“Woah, since when did I started dating an arrogant asshole.” Ruby mocked.

“I wouldn’t say arrogant, more like confident.” I replied with a cocky smirk.

“Shut up and eat your burger.” She grunted and pushed my tray closer to me. i chuckled but complied, I was hungry.

Just the epilogue left! Oh my god!! Btw, Hannah was mentioned in chapter 8. Just for those who are confused.
