“If you don't stand up for yourself, you’re letting the bully win.” – Selena Gomez

It was the normal atmosphere of Bradford. Pale blue sky with candy-floss clouds, streaming in the air like smeared paint on a canvas. Huge buildings built centuries ago still stayed in their place, with cracked walls and dusty ground. Tall leafy tree branches spiraled in all directions, each speckled with green leaves.

Noel whizzed past the familiar look of her new city. Her expression could not be read. It was almost a mixture between anger and confusion. Her hands gripped the wheel as she turned into Zayn’s driveway, next to Zayn’s black car. Huffing, she got out, slamming the door behind her. She walked to the door, black boots tapping against the grey pavement.

Knock, knock, knock.

Noel tapped her foot on the ground, impatient. It seemed as if millions of thoughts were streaming through her head, all at once. And each one was connected to one word:

Why?

The door opened slowly, and Zayn took a small step forward, arching his eyebrows. He was dressed in a thin white tank top and jeans. A set of glasses lay low on his nose.

“Noel,” He licked his lips, edge of his mouth turning slightly upwards. “Nice to see you here.”

Noel grunted out shortly, entering in without even asking. She turned around, watching with a squinted glance as Zayn walked in. He lifted up his shoulders in a questioning way.

“Don’t I get a hello?” Zayn asked, rubbing his finger under his nose. He shoved his hands deep in his pockets.

“Do you deserve one?” Noel hissed, brushing a lock of brown hair from her face. She took a deep breath out, stepping closer to the older boy. Pressing her index finger against his hard chest, she spat, “I don’t think you do.”

He looked taken aback. Gently wrapping his fingers around her wrist, he placed her hand down. He cocked his head. “What is with you?”

She shook her head, stepping back. Her head tilted up, eyes looking at his face. On the outside he looked so sweet, caring. His eyes sparkled with an almost caring look, his expressions always kind. But in the inside, was he really who he came out to be?

“You know what you did,” Noel said, voice cracked and quiet. She stepped up to him, having to arch her head up to get a proper look at his eyes through the glass of his spectacles. “You hurt my best friend. You ruined her. Not only her dignity, but her physical body also. What would drive you to break a body part, just because you are pissed?”

He scoffed, stepping back, back almost touching the closed door. Laughing in a sarcastic manner, he said, “Excuse me?’ He raised his eyebrows, breathing out in disbelief. “Are you seriously bringing this up? How many times do you think I have told you I’ve changed? Too many to count.” He scratched his head, sighing. “The past is the past.”

Noel shook her head swiftly. “You’re kidding me, right?”

Zayn took a seat on the high raised chair next to the bar, legs draping off. “What the fuck, Noel?”

“You,” she breathed, walking to him. “The past is the past? You are... unbelievable. You broke an arm, not to mention a heart. You’re cruel Zayn, do you realize what you’ve done is terrible? It’s possibly the worst feeling to get a heart broken. And when she fell, you just ignored her.” Noel felt a lump start in her throat. She swallowed; it got worse.

“Look,” Zayn whispered, pushing up his glasses. “Every night I think about what I did. I stay up hours pondering on what a fool I was. I hate what I did, Noel. Why can’t you accept that?”

“I can accept that.” Noel looked away from him, anywhere from his eyes. It was suddenly hard for her to talk with her boyfriend like that, even though that’s what couples do. Fight. It pained her to talk smack to him, but yet she went on. “I can fully accept that you regret it. That doesn’t change the fact that you hurt someone in two of the worst ways possible. And that person happened to be a loyal, loving, and wonderful person.”

Zayn stood up, bringing his face up to Noel. He was done playing games. “You think I just did it because I could?!” He pressed his face against hers, sweaty forehead touching her pale skin. “I would never do that against my own will, sweety.” He gritted his teeth. “Sasha was treating me like dirt. She always bossed me around, never gave me any say in almost everything.”

Noel pushed him back, stepping away. “You’re crazy.”

“Would you love me if I’m crazy?”

Noel stepped farther back, scared. She didn’t know what to say, or know how she felt about Zayn. A hot tear rolled down her cheek, falling to the floor.

She said nothing, and ran out the door.
