6. Epilogue

So, that's the story that has always been told, until now. That's the story that everybody knows. That I turned Actaeon into a stag, and his own dogs got him. I now carry two scars. And they still burn. I changed after Actaeon's death. It became known that I had vowed chastity, that I wanted to hunt forever and that I thought men were worthless. Every day I think of Actaeon, and how if it wasn't for me, he'd have lived a long life. And how, if I had saved his sister that time in the woods, he would have lived a happier life. I decided to dedicate myself to maidens then, to protecting them. I had let Actaeon and his sister down. And they deserved more. So, from then on, every girl I saved from men, from horrible things, they were Actaeon's sister, they were the girls I never got to save. Hard to understand, I know, but I hope one day, when you have been in love like I have, that you will understand. And every night, I lay and gaze at the stars, at Orion. And I remember, I remember the smell of thyme, and freshly cooked deer. I remember the bright masks, the wooden bed and the colours in his eyes. I remember pine needles, and a midnight kiss that lasted forever.
