Forbidden Love

In a small town there's always a scandal. But never something on the scale of this stature.

Derek Masters has lived through hell. That's putting it lightly. When he was only just entering teen years his girlfriend was killed in a bitter rage. Then the mayor of his town passes the Law,

Farmers and City Folk Will Not Mingle, Flirt, Romance, or Marry. Under the decree of the Mayor.

You see that could be a slight problem for our Derek Masters. In his freshman year of High School he fell in love with Daisy Malone.

The Mayor's daughter.

Daisy Malone has a secret. She's in love with a farm boy. With the initials DM.

6. Chapter Six

I woke up late, well later then usual. I checked my alarm, it had been disabled. I rolled over and hit something hard, and sharp. It was the picture frame corner. Memories from the night before came rushing back and I felt the tears and didn't bother to stop them. I wiped them away and hurried to the bathroom. I looked into the mirror, and the sight that I saw in the mirror made me want to keal over and die. Blood clung to every surface of my clothing and some on my face, smeared by the fresh tears. My skin was sticky and everything clung to me. I ripped my clothing off and started the shower. I stepped in not caring what the  temperature was, it was piping hot and rivulets of pink hot water rolled off of me and into the drain. I scrubbed at myself trying to get the bad memories out of my head. I blamed myself for True's death.

Natasha wouldn't have wanted me dead if I hadn't fallen in love with Daisy and her with me. When my body was pink and my skin sore from the scrubbing I turned off the water and stepped out. I tied a towel around my hips and walked back into my room, carrying my soiled clothes with me. I threw on a sweatshirt and faded blue jeans. I looked everywhere for my truck keys and I couldn't find them anywhere. My mother, must've stolen them. I groaned no way was she going to let me go to school. Defeated I flopped down on the bed and held True's picture against my chest. My mother came in a little while later and saw me.

"Derek, dear, I didn't keep you home so you could sulk."

"Then why did you keep me home? I told you I'd rather be in school I can't step foot in the barn mom. My special place with Daisy is soiled by death all because of a psycho cheerleader."

"Derek come down stairs and help me with lunch." I groaned, I rather be in school sure, but I didn't want to cook with my mom. I wondered what Daisy and the rest of my friends were doing right now. I clambered down the stairs to find my mother with a sandwich and hot chocolate, waiting for me. "Derek eat this and go up to bed. I know you didn't sleep very well."

"Alright ma. Where's dad?"

"Out in the barn, he's making sure the barn is secure for the rest of the horses."

"Oh. Well I don't think that cheerleader will be bothering us, she got swept down the river."

"You never know. You didn't think she knew the way to the Secret Place until it was too late."

"True." a tear slipped, I couldn't even say a simple word without crying. I missed her, True Grit. I missed her so much.

I stared out the window of my math class. Wondering what Derek was doing. Flashes of last night came to me and I cried. No one noticed me except for Alex.

"Hey Daisy, are you alright?"

"Alex I'm not alright. Honestly I want to go over to Derek's. He's probably really hurting right now. His horse is dead, murdered. I feel like its my fault. If I hadn't become friends with Natasha she wouldn't have fallen in love with me."

"Don't you dare blame yourself Daisy Malone. Derek loves you, True's death is not your fault."

"But I can't help it, and I wouldn't blame him if he never wanted to see me again."

"He worked too hard, and puppy loved you far too long to give up on you."

"I know that, but I don't blame him for saying goodbye." Daisy ended the conversation by putting her head on her desk. Dropping her pen as she did. The final bell rang and Daisy jumped from her seat and was the first out of the school. She put the the keys in the ignition and pulled out, she raced to Derek's house. When she reached the drive way she saw Derek's truck parked just up ahead. She got out of the truck and went to the front door. She felt silly knocking but Derek was grieving and it didn't seem right to just walk in.

The door opened and Derek stood in front of her in an oversized sweatshirt and ripped jeans. His hair was unbrushed and his eyes were puffy and swollen. He looked horrible, and his handsome face was filled with pain.

"Come in Daisy. Its nice to see you." his voice carried no tones, no emotion. Its like he was an empty shell. "Have a seat Daisy, can I interest you in a drink?"

"No I'm fine. Derek are you alright? I know losing True was hard and I totally blame myself, if I hadn't told Natalie about us she would still be alive. I loved that horse."

"I know you did Daisy, I know you did. Its like losing a child, its like part of me died when I saw True go down. I knew, she saved my life. She saved my life Daisy." He sank onto a nearby couch and started to cry.

"Derek, who's here?" I saw Mrs. Masters come out of the kitchen, she saw me and then looked at the crying Derek and she returned to the kitchen and came back out with three hot chocolates. Piled high with whipped cream, home made no doubt and chocolate sauce.

"Thank you Mrs. Masters."

"No trouble darling. Derek dear I know you loved that horse, but she was just a horse. There will be others. Now I'm not trying to come off as uncaring but look at you! You're a mess,"

"I know mom, but imagine if you lost me because I jumped in front of you." there was a silence in the room, that could only be produced by such a statement, tears welled in Derek's mother's eyes and she left the room.

"Derek, I don't think that was necessary. She just wants you to cheer up."

"How can I? My best friend and my last tie to Rebecca is dead! Because of me."

"No not just you, because of our love. Maybe we shouldn't be together."

"What are you saying Daisy?"

"Maybe this was a mistake."

"No, don't you dare Daisy Malone give up on us."

"Derek what else do you want me to do? We have two more years before we can do anything out in the open. What if Natasha is still alive? What if my father finds out,"

"We'll deal with those things as we go. As far as I'm concerned we can come out now, who cares if I'm arrested, that's unjust anyway. It goes against the constitution."

"You're right it does, its unconstitutional that you would be arrested for dating someone that's not in the same class as you."

"We'll come out tomorrow at school."

"By kissing in the lobby."

"Excellent." Daisy kissed Derek just as Mrs. Masters announced dinner was ready.

*The next Day*

Daisy woke up and stared up at her ceiling. Today she and Derek were going to publicly announce their relationship. What if someone called the police? Wait Derek said this was unconstitutional, the way her father had been making everyone live. He was a hypocrite, the biggest one of all, he grew up as a farm boy.

Daisy got up and went into her closet and chose a bright green tank top and dark blue skinny jeans and silver cowboy boots. She did her hair in a long French Braid, applied minimal make up and left grabbing her bag and keys. Her phone rang just as she got into her parking space at the school. It was a text message from Derek,

_What time should we do it?_

_Well everybody is in the Lobby at first period and no one will notice, so maybe the first free period._

_My lunch period then, okay meet you in the lobby,<3 u 4eva_

_I love you to death_

Daisy pocketed her phone and was met by Betty and Alex.

"Hey what's up?" Betty asked.

"Nothing." was Daisy's reply.

"Oh come on, we know something's on your mind." Alex said. Daisy hesitated before she said anything more.

"Meet Derek and I in the Lobby the first free period," Daisy didn't say anything more and disappeared into the crowd. Leaving behind two confused looking friends starring after her.

The first free period came along and Daisy sat on one of the couches waiting for her one true love to meet her, people started to mill around looking for their friends some looked at her strangely, mostly because the head cheerleader was sitting alone. Finally Derek came from the cafetria with a soda in hand. He sat a crossed from her which cause a lot of hushed gossip to already start up. Betty and Alex emerged from the crowded hall ways.

"Now?" Derek said into his bottle.

"Yes." They both leaned in as if they were whispering something to one another. Before their lips could touch, Daisy whispered, "I love you." Derek's lips crushed hers and she held him closer by wrapping her hands around his head, she heard the stunned silence as the students began to notice whom she was locking lips with. Betty and Alex stood there stunned looking around to make sure no one had their phones, calling the police. When they pulled apart, Daisy stood with Derek's hand in her's. She started to speak,

"Fellow students, my father's law about who you date and marry is unconstitutional! He cannot classify us into this sects of classes, we are human beings not animals. We live in the United States of America not some native tribe in New Guinea! I love Derek Masters with all of my heart and he loves me. We are prepared for the hardships that are sure to follow. But maybe Derek won't have to go to jail for loving me! If you sign our petition against this unjust law then we all will be able to date whom we please! Let the farmers and the rich kids unite! Over the summer I experienced a world where things were still about freedom, and waking up and knowing you had something to live for, someone to live for. I experienced a feeling that I know no stuck up rich adult's kid has ever experienced, a sense of freedom. I feeling that you are loved and needed, his parents are willing to let me move in with them if that means that Derek and I can stay together! So if you are dating someone or like someone because you feel its to be expected, so you don't get into to trouble, join us in this fight."

Everyone's hands shot up, as if they had been waiting for a day like this. All the hands had a pen, and Derek produced the petition form, in the end we received over two hundred and fifty signatures, not including the people in Derek's neighborhood and his parents.  We even got some teachers to sign.

"We did it Derek." Daisy said as they sat down in the Forbidden Courtyard.

"Yes we did. Maybe it will work."

"I know it will. My father can't ignore a federal law. OR so many discontent people."

"You're right."

"You've stopped saying true."

"For good reason, the word gets stuck in my throat, because of her,"

"You mean True Grit. Ah Derek honey I'm sorry. I won't question it again."

"Its alright. How am I supposed to answer those true or false questions then?"

"True," they broke out into uncontrollable laughter, they had won over the high school and the farming neighborhoods.

"We did it," she whispered as she leaned into to Derek to kiss one more time.
