Forbidden Love

In a small town there's always a scandal. But never something on the scale of this stature.

Derek Masters has lived through hell. That's putting it lightly. When he was only just entering teen years his girlfriend was killed in a bitter rage. Then the mayor of his town passes the Law,

Farmers and City Folk Will Not Mingle, Flirt, Romance, or Marry. Under the decree of the Mayor.

You see that could be a slight problem for our Derek Masters. In his freshman year of High School he fell in love with Daisy Malone.

The Mayor's daughter.

Daisy Malone has a secret. She's in love with a farm boy. With the initials DM.

9. Chapter Nine

"Murdered?" Natalie exclaimed in horror and shock. "How, when why?"

"I told you it wasn't a good time!" Derek whispered urgently. Begging Daisy to stop.

"Natasha, she-"

"Daisy stop!"

"She went a little crazy."

"Like Victor crazy?"

"Yes exactly that. She was in love with me and she wanted Derek dead, but True she stomped down on her injuring Natasha, but in the long run the blow from the knife killed True." Daisy finished before Derek could butt in once again. Natalie looked up at Derek hoping it was all a prank. Natasha couldn't have done this, she was so sweet for a city person.

"No, not Natasha."

"Natalie, she was crazy she hid her feelings well and her intentions." Derek said. Daisy looked at Natalie, she looked so frail in the hospital bed, with the white sheets and the overstuffed pillows. The machines beeping and the dripping of the IV didn't help, she was covered in the wires.

"What's with all the gadgets?" Daisy asked, almost to herself.

"Um, yeah about that. I was going to tell you guys. When they were doing x-rays they found a formation on my frontal lobe, they have to do a biopsy so just in case they've hooked me up with this. They told me not to tell you guys. But I didn't want you to come here in a week to pick me up, and I'm in the operating room."

"Do they think its cancer?" Derek choked out. Tears welling at the edges of his eyes he put his head on the sheets to discretely wipe them away.

"That's what the biopsy is for, but its what their suspecting."

"Is there any way to treat brain cancer?" Daisy asked.

"No, not any that are safe, everything is still experimental. Dad, don't cry! I'm going to pull through this!"

Derek and Daisy looked over to Mr. Clearwafler and noticed tears falling from his eyes, making them look like polished jewels. He didn't care who was looking he was crying for his daughter, Daisy thought it was sweet, and was jealous, because her father wouldn't do that. Not cry in front of two people, no he'd leave the room.

A nurse came into the room and Natalie sucked in her breathe thinking it was bad news. To Daisy and Derek it was,

"Visiting hours have ended, actually it ended three hours ago but I had errands to do." the nurse said, she didn't have errands she knew that Natalie was telling them about her condition. Derek and Daisy got up in unison and said their good byes.

"Good bye Nat, see you sometime soon."

"Yes, good bye Natalie." Daisy said as she followed Derek out the door. The last image she saw was Natalie kissing her father's cheek, and telling him not to worry. The look on her face told the whole story. She didn't tell them the whole truth. Daisy now noticed a bandage around her head, oh no, they already performed the biopsy and found her condition fatal. Daisy hurried away, if Natalie didn't want Derek to know then she wouldn't tell him. It was her secret to share with him when she was ready, hopefully it wouldn't be on her death bed. As she got into Derek's truck and buckled herself in, Derek turned to her.

"She's going to die. She didn't tell me everything. I've known her forever. She has this look she gets when she's hiding something. But this time it was crossed with the look she had when her mother died." Daisy looked at him in shock. Perhaps Natalie had known Derek would figure it out on his own, maybe she counted on Daisy telling him when she had stuck around a few minutes longer.

"You don't know that." Daisy whispered. "Natalie... she's strong she'll pull through."

"That's what Natalie said two weeks before her mom passed away." Derek said, roughly putting the truck into gear and sped out of the parking lot.

"Derek if you get pulled over, the law goes back into affect!" Daisy screamed as he whipped around a corner. "Where are we going anyway?"

"Lake Sophia." Derek muttered.  They turned onto the dirt road that led to the lake and Derek slowed some; noticing Daisy's discomfort. He parked three feet from the water's edge and slammed the truck to park. He got out of the cab and slammed the door behind him. Flabbergasted Daisy went after him. There's way more to this story then anyone involved is letting on. She found Derek up on top of the cliff that kids jumped off of in the summer. "What would happen if you didn't try to come back up?" he whispered.

"You'd drown silly. Why you talking like that Derek?" Daisy asked worried.

"Nothing, its just something Natalie said the day after her mom's funeral." Derek sat down on the rock and unconsciously traced something on the rock, Daisy knelt down and noticed initials.

"What's this?"

"Natalie wanted to remind herself of her mom's saying; 'Always separate yourself from the current, and make your own river.' she kept that saying in her heart and you know, she didn't initial on that tree, she initialed this rock away from the current." Derek said smiling.

"She's going to be okay. Might have some bad hair days but I'll help her with that."

"No one can see the future Daisy." Derek said, his head lowering back down so she couldn't see his face behind the curtain of his hair.  His back started heaving, he was crying. "Natalie, she's my best friend. When that law was past she's only living soul that was anywhere near me and my age! I was a jerk to her before that damn law and she took me in. The law was passed one year after Rebecca's death."

"Hey, Derek its okay, I was a bitch to everyone before the accident. I never knew Natalie liked you like that, I blame myself for her accident, but if she hadn't she'd be dead by now with that mystery formation in her brain."

"I guess so. You really think she'll be okay?"

"I can't make any promises but somehow I know she'll pull through." A phone rang in the distance and Daisy got up and climbed back down to the truck to retrieve her phone.

"Dear, its your father." it was Daisy's mother, sounding frantic on the other end.

"Daddy? What's wrong with daddy?"

"He suffered a major heart attack, and they're rushing them to St. Josephine's right now! Please hurry."

"I just left the hospital, I'll be there soon." Daisy hung up the phone, tears rolling down her cheeks. Derek was at her side before she could call him done.

"My father is being rushed to the hospital, can you take me there?"

"Of course."
