4. Fighting

Noel talked to Grams and Gramps about a cancer treatment center in Spain. It's supposed to be the very best, and because he's 19 and has family money he wants to take me there to get me the best treatment. apparently his father has a summer cottage there and they left it in his name when they decided to disappear off the face of the earth.. well really they just ran off and went to live somewhere else because they didnt really want to raise Noel, but he did a perfectly fine job of raising himself. Jessie, Molly, Chelsea, and Ally stood beside Grams and Gramps at the door of my room while Noel was talking over the details to the boys. Ally was the first to speak up, "We're really going to miss you, but we know that Noel is right, they can fight the cancer better at a nicer facility than what we have here." A tear slipped down my cheek as i told them that everything would be fine. that i would call and write and that Noel would take good care of me. I was exited too, a whole house to myself and Noel. a whole country away, an ocean, and doctors that could cure me. something that i was looking foward to. Grams and Gramps hugged me and i climbed into Noels car and we drove off to the airport. "Kaden," Noel cooed at me as we pulled up to the airport, "were here." i smiled up at him and kissed his forehead as he helped me out of the car and onto the plane. once we were both seated he held my hand and i drifted off to sleep. when i woke up i saw nothing but puffy white clouds and ocean waves underneath me as i looked out the window. i felt Noels eyes on me and so i turned around in my seat to see him looking fondly at me, "hey" he whispered as he kissed my forehead, hey i responded as i put my head on his chest and closed my eyes.

when the plane finally landed Noel took my hand and helped me gather all of our belongings and put them into the trunk of a cab and handed the driver a piece of crumpled up paper and explained to the driver that this is where we needed to go. the cab car winded around narrow roads with pretty rock jetties and big houses and i couldnt help but wonder what kind of house we would be living in... our house Noel had called it, i wondered how many rooms it would have, how close the the ocean it would be, how far from the hospital, or would they be coming to me instead. Noel must have sensed my apprehension because he leaned over and grabbed my hand. "Everything is going to be fine Kaden," he said with a smile and i knew he was right. the cab driver announced that we were probably around an hour out from the house and asked if we wanted anything to eat, Noel said no thank you and then the driver glanced at the paper once more and then a look of dismay crossed his face. "Please forgive me mister," he said, "I had no idea that you were who you are, your house has been stocked with food and the nurses will be there shortly after you arrive. it is a pleasure to meet you." the cab driver explained that he was a friend of Noels fathers and that the house was in great condition. in no time we were at the house, which should have been called a castle with its winding drive and its huge porch and ocean access yard. Noel pulled me out of the cab and thanked the driver and he led me inside the mansion. there was an elevator in the middle of the entrance of the foyer and we took it. it let straight to a corrider with the master suite at the end of the hall and Noel led me to the bed and i climbed in. he told me he had to make some phone calls to the nurses and then he would be back.

i curled up under the duvet and hoped that he would be coming back soon. i didn't want to be in this big house all alone fighting with my cancer while all of my friends and family were miles away. didn't Noel understand that i was scared to be in this country that i'd never been to before, didn't he understand that i needed him now more than i had ever needed him before. "Kaden?" I heard his voice as the floorboards creaked... finally i thought to myself, finally he was back. but he was going to get it for making me worry for so long. so i squeezed my eyes shut even tighter under the duvet and pretended to be asleep. "Kaden, are you alright?" Noel sounded worried but i was still mad at him for leaving me so i kept my mouth shut and continued to pretend that i was asleep. i felt the duvet being lifted up and Noel's hands against my cheeks as he said my name one last time with even more worry in his voice and then he pressed his lips to mine and i couldnt supress the smile growing on my lips. "Busted!" Noel crowed as he wrapped his arms around my neck and pulled me up into a sitting position. i just smirked and told him that i didn't like being left alone, after all i was fighting this all alone... Noel reached for my hand then and he squeezed mine in his and he whispered in a husky voice, "You're not fighting this alone, I'm fighting this with you." i squeezed his hand harder and layed back down as Noel pulled the duvet over us and put his arms around me, "We should get some sleep," he said. I nodded and rolled my body into his, allowing myself to drift off to sleep.
