'He was a wallflower, I could tell that much, but I had a weird desire to find out more than just his social status. He met my eyes and mouthed, "Hello,"...'

1. Just a Story

“Tell me a story.”

I closed my eyes and rested my head against his shoulder.

“Once upon a time,” I started, before being interrupted.

“A proper story!” he growled. I snapped open my eyes to glare at him.

“Let me finish.” He sat back and waited.

“Once upon a time, a boy called Romeo and a girl called Juliet were in love. They vowed to do anything to be with each other. You know, some people can’t drink their tea without sugar or step on cracks in the pavement, but they bound by something stronger than day-to-day habits. They were irrevocably in love, and death was the only thing that would keep them apart.” My eyes were gently shut, but I could sense that he was smiling.

“And death was the end result. One died, the other refused to live on. Their love was so strong, so unfaltering, that Juliet would take her life at the drop of the hat, as would Romeo, so they would still be together in death.”

“Do you think it’s real?” he asked me.

“Well, I reckon Shakespeare could have based in on some element of truth...”

“No,” he said, shaking his head. “Do you think that there’s such a thing as a love like they had?”

“I guess there could be...” I trailed off, looking at my best friend curiously. “You’re not implying that...”

“Oh, no!” he laughed slightly, ruffling my hair with his hand. “Our friendship that is unbreakable is quite enough for me.” He smiled as he spoke, and I felt warmer seeing his face so happy.

“See ya,” he called, sauntering out of the room and shutting the front door carefully behind him. I collapsed back onto my bed. Every time someone leaves, I recall the last words they said to me, clinging on, in case for some reason they didn’t make it back. It was a habit I had picked up at the end of my last relationship. My ex and I aren’t exactly on speaking terms anymore.

‘See ya.’ The words so simple, a guarantee that yes, I would see him again. But this was not to be the case.
