Divided Soul

A dark and gritty character study. Won't elaborate more, because I don't want to spoil the twist at the end!

Cookies for anyone who can figure out the meaning of the twist ending! :P (Look in the title and the dialogue for a clue.)

*Original Idea was not from me, it was from a machinima I really enjoyed, so I added my own spin to it and distilled the story so everyone could understand. Link to original video in description.

1. Reunion

I slowly opened my eyes, greeted by the pitch-black darkness of the four walls around me. As my eyes gradually adjusted to the darkness and my surroundings came into focus, I shook off the hold sleep had on me.

I looked around myself, registering the familiar environment of my bedroom.

Beside me, my wife Anna lay sound asleep, her body turned towards the window, facing away from me. I reached towards her and gently caressed the curve of her cheek, feeling her flawless skin and her hair, smooth as silk.

Not wanting to wake her, I quietly climbed out of bed, putting on a T-shirt. I left the bedroom, deciding to grab a drink in the kitchen. Along the way, I stopped at the doorway of my 5-year old son’s bedroom, peering in to check on him.

Corey was safe and sound in slumber land. I admired the rise and fall of his chest, satisfied that I had such an adorable child. I loved him more than anything in the world.

I continued to the kitchen, finding my way without any lights. The night was silent and disturbingly still. I entered the kitchen, but before I could pour myself a drink, I noticed a shadow standing at the far end of the kitchen, near the balcony.

“Who’s there?” I demanded, reaching for the light switch and flipping it on.

The overhead lights flared up instantly and illuminated the expanse of the entire kitchen. They revealed a tall and lanky man in his early thirties, casually leaning against the door to the balcony.

“Edrick?” I gasped disbelievingly.

Edrick only gave a chuckle and opened his arms wide, in a mock gesture of welcome. “Well? Aren’t you happy to see me, after such a long time?”

“I-it’s been 7 years since I last saw you…” I whispered. And now he was standing in my kitchen, in the middle of the night.

“Now, now, Aricke,” Edrick chuckled again. “We used to be best friends! Surely our friendship can withstand the test of time?”

Edrick pushed himself off the door and took a few steps further into the kitchen. He glanced around at the kitchen. “Nice place you’ve got here. Décor’s a little not suited to my taste, though.”

I remained where I was standing. “What do you want? Why are you back?”

Edrick swiveled and looked me straight in the eye, for the first time. In that single, brief gaze, it all came rushing back to me. That same self-assured, confident and powerful gaze. It hadn’t changed after all these years. The first time I saw it was in a playground near my house at that time. I was only 7 years old at that time.
