3. A New Life in Florida

We arrived at Florida about a week ago. Since then we've been busy unpacking. Our new home was larger than our old one and was right on the beach. The house was light green with white accents and had a big backyard. It was beautiful, but strange because I realized this is where I'll be living for now on. I decided to go out and see what it's like here in Tampa.

"Mom, I'm going to go out for a while. I'll be back before dinner," I said before walking out the door.

There weren't a lot of people outside as I was walking. I eventually ended up on the beach, walking along the water. It felt cold against my feet, but it felt good. The sun was starting to set and I would have to go home soon. I sat down, letting the sand slide through my fingers. I wonder how life will be like here. All the sudden, I felt something hit my side and push me to the ground.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't see you," the person said as he was helping me up. He had dark hair and about the same age I am.

"Um, it's alright," I replied, brushing the sand off me.

"Are you hurt?" he asked.

"I'm fine...thanks," I said.

He nods, and then turned and started running. 'Strange,' I thought as I started heading back home. He just ran off as if nothing happened. I was still thinking about this when I arrive home. My mom was talking on the phone while my sister was setting the table. I walk inside right when my mom finishes her conversation.

"OK. Thank you," she said before hanging up. "Jessica, that was the school. You'll start going there tomorrow," she told me.

"Tomorrow? Isn't that a little too soon," I asked.

"Don't let your shyness get the best of you. I'm sure you'll be fine. Now, it's time for dinner."

I woke up at 7:30 and I hurried to get ready. Soon enough, I'm running down the stairs and rushing to eat my breakfast. Then I'm out the door, saying bye to my mom and sister. Since my new school isn't too far away, I have to walk there. My new school is called Princeton High. When I get, there are so many people. I don't want to draw attention to myself, but that didn't happen. Everyone was looking at me, and I was starting to feel uncomfortable. Some soon lost interest, but other kept their eyes on me until I walked inside the school. As I walk to office, I start to relax a little. Maybe this won't be too bad.

"Hello, you must be our newest student," a man said to me.

"Um, yes. I'm Jessica Daly."

"Welcome to Princeton High. Here is your schedule and your homeroom is down the hall."

"Thank you."

My nerves started to come back. 'Everyone is going to look at me,' I thought. I hesitated to open the door to my homeroom. My shyness was taking over. I finally gathered enough courage to walk inside. It was very loud and the teacher was trying to get their attention. But once I walked in, everyone stopped what they were doing and it was dead silent. I can hear my heart pounding in my ears.

"Hello. Are you Jessica," the teacher asked.

I couldn't say anything because there was a lump in my throat. I just nod.

"Well in that case, welcome. I'm Ms. Moreno."

I nod again and walk toward an empty seat in the back of the class. I look around at the other students. But one boy looked very familiar. Then it hit me - he was the boy on the beach from last night. I guess he recognized me too because after he saw me, he quickly looked away. I just look away and sat down. Then everyone begins talking again. I just sit there, watching how everyone acts. Soon, three girls approach me. One is tall and slim, but the other is short and has a round figure. The girl in the middle was also tall and slim and seemed to be the leader.

"Hey, uh, Jessica is it? I'm Brittany and this is Ruby and Gabriella."

"Um, hi," I replied in a small voice.

"I just wanted to tell you that I make the rules around here so don't get in my way, or there will be consequences."

She smirks and then as if on cue, they turn around and walk away. How would I get in their way and what consequences was she talking about? I just tried not to dwell on it too much. Soon enough, class started and distracted me about what just happened.
