3. What Did You Do?

I stood by the door, gaining my breath and composure, I grabbed the bucket off the ground, then I walked in, straight past Ma and dad. I headed towards the sink, washing the beans and cumquats before putting them in two separate paper bags and placing them in the fridge.

I heard a cough behind me, and turned to find dad glaring at me, his face a deep shade of crimson. Mum was standing by the old burgundy counter, looking sorry and helpless.

"You enter a competition, girl?" He bellowed at me, I just stood there, not being able to move. I glanced up and saw my three sisters, Adeline and Anna-Marie desperately trying to lead Jane-Elle outside so that she wouldn't witness what was about to come. Adeline looked up and our eyes met, she gave me a sympathetic look and continued coaxing Janey. The realisation of what Dad had said slowly sunk in.

"YOU ENTER, A COMPETITION?!" Dad hollered at me, chunks of saliva flying from his lips.

I couldn't answer, my throat was dry and my lips didn't seem to want to move, all I could do was nod, so I did, quite rapidly too. The words that came out of his mouth next shocked me, they left me quite dumbfounded and speechless.

I knew I would have to answer soon or my backside would be having a not-so-pleasant meeting with Dad's precious belt. I concentrated all the strength I could muster and chose my words quite carefully, if I said one wrong thing, I was done-for.

"I-I d-d-don't know, d-dad, m-maybe it w-was a wr-wr-wrong n-number?" I stuttered slowly, half expecting dad to lash out and grab me, but he didn't.

Dad let out an almighty roar before muttering something about stupid women, and how he was going for a drive, then he left, slamming the front door behind him, we heard the car door open and close, and then the engine starting up.

Ma darted over to me, engulfing me in a huge hug, then all my sisters dashed into the room, also engulfing me in tight hugs, I honestly thought I would be swallowed whole by hugs. Then the questions started,

"What did you do?" "Did you do it?" "What did he say?" "Is he gone?" "Niy."

I simply stood there, shocked, I think they all understood that I had done nothing, and that Dad, had, as per usual, gone off over nothing. Til Janey made her little contribution, and I started giggling, we all did, she had that effect on us.
