7. Six

Shay and I were cleaning up the kitchen because dad decided to make a big mess in there. Sometimes I swear my dad acts like a kid. I was washing the dishes when Shay was cleaning up the flour on the table. I don’t know what my dad was making; all I know was that there was a big mess. I was almost done cleaning the dishes, when I felt something hit me on my back. I turned around, to see Shay laughing, with flour all over his hands. I walked over to him, acting like I was going to kiss him, slyly, grabbing some flour off the table, flicking it in his face then grabbed a cup of water, and poured it on his head. His facial expression was hilarious. I put more flour on him. Before he could do anything else, I slowly walked away, but he grabbed me by my waist and poured water on me. He laughed and took the bag of flour and poured it over my head and then, more water. We both started laughing, the vengeance of karma is awesome! “What’s going on here?” my dad asked, coming into the room.

“Nothing, but you have to clean up this mess,” I said, without waiting for him to respond, I grabbed Shays hand and ran out of the house.

We ran a block away from the house, when Shay suggested we go somewhere. I followed him into the woods. We went father and father into the woods. We stopped in front of tall brushes and trees, when he turned around and said, “I showed Tray this place and I bet he’s already shown you, but I’ve never shown him this one specific detail that made this place so spectacular!”

I saw Trey’s and mine secret place. So, this is how Trey found out about this place. Shay grabbed my hand, and lead me to the water fall. He looked back at me smiled and went around the water fall. There was a giant rock, right behind the water fall. He let go of my hand, and pushed the rock to the side.

It took about minute to push the rock out the way but he is stronger than he looks. He took my hand again and led me into the cave. He covered my eyes, and told me to close them. I did as I was told and felt him lead me father into the cave. It felt like forever, but I think it was only a couple minutes. He uncovered my eyes and said, “Open your eyes.”

When I opened my eyes, I saw a clear pond and lights where hanging with a blanket and candles all around the cave. It was beautiful. I walked over to the pond, it looked deep. I looked at him and he smiled at me. He came over and kissed me. I pulled away and told him, “Thank you, it’s so beautiful.”

“I will do anything for you,” he said while hugging me.

“When did you do this? You were at my house all day today.”

“My friends, Joshua and Brielle, they put it up for me so I can surprise you.”

“That was nice of your friends.”

That’s when two people came up from behind a rock and put their finger to their lips telling me not to tell Shay. I smiled slightly, to show them I wouldn’t warn Shay. One was a girl with red, long hair, and the other was a boy with dark brown hair that covers his eyes. I figured they are Brielle and Joshua. When they came closer and was about to push him, I quickly backed away from Shay. He looked at me confused. I smiled at him and when he was about to say something, they pushed him in the water. I fell incidentally on the ground, from laughing so hard.

They also were on the ground laughing, too. Once Shay came back up from the water we stopped laughing and smiled innocently. He got out, put his arms out and said, “Hey, babe, can I get a hug?”

“No, ‘babe’, I don’t want to hug you. You are wet,” Joshua said stepping away.

“Aw, why not? You don’t want to hug your best friend?”

“No, I don’t want a hug, from your wet butt.”

Shay smirked and ran after Joshua, who took off. They ran around the cave until Joshua ran outside with Shay trailing after him. Brielle came over to me and introduced herself, “Hey, I’m Brielle Brighton, and the person that ran away is Joshua Carr. My boyfriend. Don’t worry, they are always like this.”

“Hey, I’m-” she cut me off and said, “I already know, Shay told me all about you.”

I smiled. He talks about me. I heard laughter from the entrance. In come Shay, and Joshua soaking wet. They were talking and, “Hey. Shay, did you ask her yet?”

“No, I was about to, but I was wondering why I was under water.”

I decided to join in on the fun, taking Brielle’s hand, hiding behind a rock. She knew what I was doing. They looked around confused. When their backs were towards us and close enough to the water. We went over there as quietly as we could and pushed them in. With a big splash. We looked at each other and ran away. We went outside the cave and into the woods. We kept running until we were near my house. I turned to look behind me to see a soaking wet Shay and Joshua. They weren’t far behind. I opened my door to let Brielle go in first. Then closed and locked it behind me. “Hey, I want you to meet someone,” I told her and went into Saria’s room. I saw Saria, and my dad playing. My dad who had a crown on his head, stood up, posed and said, “I am King, you must obey me.”

“You aren’t the king!” Saria took the crown off his head, “I’m the princess and you must obey me.”

“Oh, do I now?”

I laughed, and Saria’s face lit up when she saw me. “Mommy, you’re home!” she ran up to me and hugged my legs.

“Hey, Saria, I want you to meet my friend, Brielle, Brielle this is my daughter, Saria,” I said picking Saria.

“Why aren’t you the cutest thing I ever saw,” Brielle said poking Saria nose.

“Hi Bri-brieell,” Saria tried saying Brielle’s name.

“Sweetie, you call me Bri.”

I heard banging on the front door. I gave Saria to Brielle and went to the window. After peeking out, I saw Shay there. I ran back to Saria’s room, grabbed Brielle’s hand and told Saria, “Want to come with me and Bri? We are hiding from Shay.”

She shook her head yes and I picked her up and went to the back door. We ran to the side of the house. I peeked over the corner. They were still there, my dad answered the door, “Hey Shay, what are you doing here? Where’s my baby girl?” he asked. I knew my dad wouldn’t rat me out. He even had the concerned look on his face. I love my dad.

“Hi, Mr. Caverly, I was just about to ask you,” Shay said.

“Well, I haven’t seen her ever since you guys ran off.”

“Well, sir, where do you think she went to?”

“I don’t know. Where do you think she went?”

Shay became more confused while talking to my dad. I was kind of enjoying it. Brielle took my arm and pulled me in the other direction behind a tree. I put down Saria on the grass since my arms were starting to hurt. I looked over the tree and saw Shay and Joshua coming to the backyard. They looked behind almost every tree in the yard except the one we were hiding behind. They were coming closer to the tree. I looked over at Brielle. She looked at me and gave me an evil grin.

She picked up a rock and threw it into the bushes on the other side of us. The boys ran over to the bush were the rock was thrown. Taking our chance we ran to the front yard as quietly as we could. Luckily they didn’t see us. I got a quick idea to keep them occupied. I put down Saria and asked, “Hey, Saria, do you want to help mommy and Bri mess around with Shay and his friend?” She shook her head yes. “Okay go over to them and say that you can’t find me or Bri anywhere. You checked every place you been you can think of, okay?” I continued, she said yes and ran to the backyard. Brielle and I checked over the corner of the house and saw Saria in Shay’s arms, she was crying and he was trying to calm her down. “I love your daughter! She is a good actress,” Brielle whispered, “where to next, girly?”

I thought for a while. Then an idea popped into my mind. “I know where, follow me.” We ran a block to my job. When we were closer we slowed down to a walk. We went through the side door, and sat down at a booth. We were trying to catch our breath, when Brit came up to the table. Why does she always love to bother me. “Aw, did the little slut finally make a little friend?”

“Aw, she is so conceited that she is looking right into her reflection. It’s so sad even she thinks she’s a whore,” Brielle said to me. I was trying to hold in a laugh, when Brielle said to Brit, “Why don’t you get your cheap ass out of here.”

“Sorry, honey I’m not cheap,” Brit said.

“Fine free, sorry.” Brielle gave Brit a smirk, stood up, grabbed my arm and walked away, leaving Brit speechless. I hugged Brielle and said, “Thank you so much. You don’t know how long she has making my live hell.”

“No, problem girly. We are best friends now. And don’t you forget that!”

I finally feel like my life is getting back on track.

We went through the front door still laughing at what Brielle said to Brit. I saw Shay screaming into the phone, Linda on the couch crying with my dad trying to calm her down, and Joshua sitting on the floor with an ice pack to his eye. “What happened?” I asked.

“Saria...” Linda said barley above a whisper.

“Saria? What happen to her?”

“She is in the hospital.”

“What? What happened?”

“She is sick.”

I fell to the floor. Shocked. I couldn’t believe it. She was only three. There has to be a mistake. I began to cry. Shay throw his phone. Saw me and pulled my into his arms trying to calm me down. “What is she sick from?” I asked when I could find my voice.

“We don’t know,” Shay whispered in my ear. I cried more into his shoulder. “I want to see her.” I whispered my voice barely audible.

“We just finished packing clothes for us to stay.”

I stood up and walked to the car. Everyone else came out one by one. All, still shocked by the news. She seemed perfectly fine before we left. “Hey, Joshua? What happened to your eye?”

“Oh, um I will tell you guys later,” he said, looking away.

Brielle eyed him suspiciously for a minute, and then looked away. So many questions were wondering though my head. What happened to his eye? Who was Shay yelling at though the phone? Why did Saria get can cancer? Why did Trey die in the car crash? Why does Brit hate me? Why do I get bullied? What did I do to deserve this? Why me?

“Mommy!” Saria screamed from her hospital bed. She looked so pale; most of her hair was gone. I wanted to cry so badly but kept a strong face. I went over and gave her a big hug. “    We have some bad news,” said a doctor coming in, “Why don’t I speak to the mother and then the rest, Mrs. Caverly come with me.”

I nodded, kissed Saria on the forehead and walked out. “I’m sorry about Saria’s condition, but we haven’t figured out what she has. I’m afraid she only has a few weeks left.”

I nodded. Leaned against the wall. I could feel my legs slowly giving out on me. I felt silent tears drip off of my face. Shay came out at hugged me from my side. He tried to calm me down, but I just couldn’t. Everyone came out to cry with me; no one wants Saria to see them falling apart. I calmed down enough to put a smile on my face and wiped all the tears away. Then I got up and walked into the room again. I saw Saria with a confused face. I walked over to her sat down next to her and asked, “What’s wrong baby?”

“Why is everyone crying mommy?” She asked.

“Something is happening, to you and I can’t explain it very well.”

Everyone came in and hugged Saria. Everyone was putting a brave face on for her. I just put her in my arms and holding her and sang her a lullaby.

Oh my darling, oh my darling,

My darling Clementine,

You are lost for me forever,

Dreadful sorry, Clementine.

I knew it was a sad lullaby. That’s what I felt like. When she fell asleep she was curled up into a ball on my lap. She so innocent. So sweet. I am wishing that this was all a dream but I knew it wasn’t. I looked around to see everyone was in tears. I felt like my heart has been ripped out of me. Why does she have to leave me? Shay kissed my forehead and sat next to me and I laid my head down on his shoulder. I couldn’t believe this was happening? Shay wrapped his arms around me and pulled me closer. It was then I fell asleep feeling safe.
