1. A Look in the Mirror

Three years old

A look in the mirror

Big blue eyes and a wide smile

Was all she could see

Her reflection made her happy

Wanting to touch the blank surface

She had just come home from her grandmother’s house

Filled with joy and delicious food

And her mother and father had laughed so loudly

With a kiss now and then

Now she was tired, wanted to sleep

Her mother tugged her in, silently singing a lullaby

She was three years old

A happy girl

Five years old

A look in the mirror

Clear blue eyes and crooked teeth

Was all she could see

Her reflection made her think of

How a mirror was created

She had just come home from her best friend’s house

Filled with toys and dressup dolls

And her friend’s parents had sent her a smile

Introducing themselves and welcoming her

Now she was excited, first day at school tomorrow

Her mother tugged her in and turned off the lamp

She was five years old

A curious girl

Ten years old

A look in the mirror

Grayish blue eyes and a little smirk

Was all she could see

Her reflection made her wonder

Why she looked different from others

She had just come home from a long day at school

Filled with homework and boring teachers

And the teachers had given her a B

Saying that she needed to read more often

Now she was exhausted, just wanted to sleep

But her mother didn’t let her, she had a piano lesson waiting

She was ten years old

A tired girl

15 years old

A look in the mirror

Dead blue eyes and mascara smudges

Was all she could see

Her reflection made her want

To hide away from the world

She had just come home from the hospital

Filled with fake smiles and voices as sweet as sugar

And the doctor had told her to eat again

Saying that eating disorders could lead to death

Now she was tired, tired of life

But her mother couldn’t see, didn’t know what to do

She was 15 years old

An unhappy girl

17 years old

A look in the mirror

Nervous blue eyes and a rope around the neck

Was all she could see

Her reflection made her scared

What had she become?

She had been home all day in her tiny bedroom

Filled with pictures of those, whom she had lost

And they all reminded her of the happy times

That she now was surprised had even existed

And the girl was anxious, but also in peace

Her mother wasn’t home, she was working late

She was 17 years old

A girl ready to die
