25. two can play it at that game

Ashtons Pov

As I sat at the back of the classroom, I watched on as Emily and Alex were getting on a bit too well. I mean I know they used to be best friends and all, but I mean wouldn’t you be jealous if your girlfriend was partnered with her childhood crush? I was too caught up in what Emily was doing, that I didn’t even hear who else was partnered with who, or even that the bell had gone, signalling class was over.

“So, you want to hang at lunch and get started on our project early?” I heard Alex ask Emily. She smiled widely at him before nodding. She scooped up her books and held them firmly in her hands, but Alex took them out of her hands and carried them for her. That was normally my job. I sighed as I saw them both walk out of the class and heading down the hallway.

Two can play it at that game. If she can flirt, why can’t I?

As Jessica and I walked out of the classroom, I invited her to sit with us at lunch. She eagerly agreed and we both walked side by side towards the cafeteria, mentioning little things about ourselves. As we walked through the double doors and towards the rest of the guys, they all stopped talking and glared at me and Jessica.

“Oh um hey Jessica.” Luke awkwardly said as jess and I sat down.

“Hey guys! I’m super stoked I get to sit with youse! I’ve heard so much about you. All good of course!” she smiled. I don’t exactly know if she was lying or not, but she sounded convincing.

“Wish we could say the same.” Calum muttered under his breath. I kicked his leg under the table causing him to wince in pain. I hoped he got the picture.

“I mean we’ve heard great things about you too.” He weakly smiled at her.

She rolled her eyes before she began eating her banana. Was it just me or was she eating it really weirdly? Like she was trying to send me a message? I removed my eyes off from her, and to the glass window, which lead to the outside seats.

Alex and Emily sat there, talking and laughing. I studied them carefully, hoping he wouldn’t try anything on my girl. He grabbed her wrist and began writing something on it. She wouldn’t cheat on me, would she?

Emily’s Pov

“Emily can I ask you a question?” Alex asked, removing his eyes form his notepad and focusing his attention on me.

“Sure anything.” I smiled back at him.

“Why are you so perfect?” he said, smiling widely at me, which caused me to laugh at his question. “Why are you laughing?” he said in all seriousness.

I calmed myself down a bit before answering. “Because I have never been called perfect. Ever.” I giggled back.

“Ever? Not even by your boyfriend?” he questioned. Oh I never thought of that.

“No, not that I can remember.” I said, now looking down at my hands and fiddling with them. Why has this never occurred to me before?

Alex grabbed the pen off his notepad, before reaching out for my wrist, pulling it closer to his body. I shuffled closer to him so we were only probably 30 centimetres apart. He began slowly writing something on my wrist. All I could do was giggle at how the pen was tickling me.

When he finished, he lifted my wrist up to his lips and kissed it softly, before letting go and letting me study what he drew.

‘You are perfect to me’

That’s what it read.

I gazed at my wrist and then up to Alex. A small tear rolled down my cheek as it was the first time someone had called me perfect. Alex carefully lifted his thumb up to my soft cheek, and make the tear disappear.

“But wait.” I said, suddenly realising something. “Wont this rub off as soon as it gets wet?” I asked.

“Oh… I never thought of that.” He said, tapping his index finger on his chin a couple of times, trying to think of something obviously. “Well what if every day I re-wrote it. On the same wrist, on the exact same spot.” He said, smiling up at me. I smiled back and moved closer to him, giving him a warm hug. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer, as I rested my head in the crook of his neck. Ashton never did this to me. Why? Why was I all of a sudden questioning all this now?
