15. Chapter XV

I had been at the park for an hour and a half, and decided I needed some coffee. Realising there was a café only five minutes away, I headed towards the rows of small shops, across from the lake.

Seeing Michael there was a shock.

He was seated at the ice cream parlour, with a young, black haired girl, her back to me.

Michael glanced up as I scurried past, and in an instant he had excused himself from her and headed after me, calling out my name.

“Emily, wait!” He called, picking up his speed as he sped towards me.

“What.” I grunted, turning around as he reached me.

“What’s wrong?” He puffed.

“I stuff up everything.” I mumbled, readjusting the bag still swung over my shoulder.

Michael stared at the bag before adding, “Things still tough between you and Ashton?”

“Yeah.” I shrugged in annoyance, turning around and heading towards the café, leaving Michael there alone. He eventually gave up and turned around, heading back to his friend.

“You’re coffee ma’am.” The petite barista woman called, handing me my coffee.

“Thank-you.” I replied, taking the hot beverage from her hands, smiling and walking away.

I found myself wandering towards the single table positioned in the sunlight moments later, avoiding most of the crowd. As I slid my bag off my shoulder, I sat down, cupping the foam cup in my hands and taking a sip.

I pulled out my laptop and headed onto Twitter, switching to Tumblr incredibly fast as I read more hateful tweets directed towards me.

When will this stop?

Scrolling down Tumblr was a breeze, it always seemed to calm me down and allow me to let my imagine wander. A few photos of the band appeared down my dash, pictures girls had taken at their concerts or as they were walking in our local mall.

A picture of Ashton and I came up, and my heart froze.

It was a month ago, four days after Ashton brought me up onto the stage at their last concert. I was laughing, my head thrown back, as Ashton held my hand tight, staring at me.

It was a hot summer day and we were at the lake. A smile crept on my lips as I remembered why I had been laughing.

Man I missed him.

Why do I always stuff things up when I have real feelings for someone.

I shut my laptop closed, and pulled out my phone, dialling Ashton’s number.

I need to fix this.

After five rings I hung up, realising I saw the tall, familiar figure stalk past the large glass window.

Ashton?

He headed through the doors of the coffee shop and stood still, his eyes scanning the twenty or so heads in the room.

His eyes stopped and landed on mine, as he sighed. He strolled in my direction, and took the seat across from me.

I took another sip from my coffee, and fiddled with the cup on the table between my nervous hands.

“Emily.” Ashton breathed, the familiar letter clutched in his hand.

I stared down at the round wooden table, not daring to make eye contact.

“I’m sorry.” I whispered.

“No no baby don’t be sorry.” He spoke softly, coming to my side and sitting down, wrapping his long arm around my shoulder and pulling me to his chest.

“How did you find me?” I mumbled, to which he replied, “Michael texted me.”

“Remind me to thank him.” I chuckled.

“I love you.” He smiled, kissing my hair. “And I’m sorry I wasn’t returning your texts or calls. I don’t deal with competition well. But thank-you for explaining everything to me.”

“I love you too Ashton.” I breathed. “Thank-you for reading it.”

“I understand you still love Calum but I’m going to show you that you’re better off with me.” He confessed, which caused me to stare into his eyes and I couldn’t help but smile.

“God you mean a lot to me.” I smiled, placing a small, soft kiss on his lips.

About ten minutes later, Ashton stood up and placed my laptop back in my bag before swinging it over his shoulder. “Come on, let’s go. Let’s head back to my place.” He said, grabbing a hold of my hand and pulling me up.

I threw away the now empty foam cup in the trash by the door, Ashton had helped me finish my coffee. He led me down the street to the carpark where his car sat, and helped me inside, as I covered my eyes by the harsh sunlight.

The drive was only short, but still I was able to explain why I wasn’t going back home to Ashton.

“You can stay here for the time being.” Ashton smiled, as he pulled up in the driveway.

“You sure?” I questioned, not wanting to be a burden in the Irwin’s home.

“Of course I’m sure!” He laughed, taking my hand and my bag before leading me inside.
