I Won't Give Up *IN EDITING*

Falling for your best friend is always tough, but Emily always imagined it to be as perfect as relationships come. Holding hands, long walks on the beach, endless kissing. What she couldn't imagine was her relationship to contain fights, tears and heartbreak.

Will fate allow young Emily Downs to be in the perfect relationship she's always wanted, or take her down a dark twisted road full of cheating, hatred, lies and run aways.

Only time will tell for these two lovebirds.

19. Chapter XIX

“What are you doing? No! You can’t go there!” I yelled, watching as Ashton placed the word round in the exact spot I was going to go. “You can’t do that.” I laughed, kicking his leg underneath the table we were seated at.

It was now a week later and we were back in Ashton’s house on a lazy Saturday afternoon. With Harry and his mother out at soccer practice, we had the house to ourselves for the afternoon, so we decided on playing Scrabble. Well, more like I demanded and Ashton sighed, admitting defeat.

“Rude. That’s fifteen points thank-you.” I cocked, a cheeky grin plastered on my face as I totalled my current score.

“You’re cheating.” He protested, standing up and pushing the scrabble squares across the table, thus ending the game.

“Someone’s a sore loser.” I spoke, bursting into laughter instantly.

“I’m home.” Ashton’s mum called, startling us both. She closed the front door and headed to the back of the house where we were.

“Where are you, oh there you guys are!” His mum smiled, placing the bags of groceries on the kitchen bench before coming over and hugging us both. Her eyes fell to the table where scattered letters lay. She shook her head as she walked back into the kitchen, where she helped her son back away the groceries.

“Emily you won again?” She smirked, putting the fresh bottle of milk in the fridge draw. I walked over and grabbed a box of cereal and shoved it into the cupboard before replying, “Well actually if Ashton hadn’t chucked a dummy he would have actually won.”

“What?” Ashton screeched, turning around on his heals with wide eyes. “How?!”

“If you payed attention to the actual scoring of the game, which you don’t, you would have seen you were miles ahead of me.” I cocked, pushing the last few boxes of food into the pantry.

“No far!” He laughed, shaking his head.

“See Ashton, if you don’t always give up you might actually find that you’ll end up winning.” His mum added, to which I nodded in agreement.

“Where’s Harry?” He asked, reverting the conversation down a different path.

“He’s staying at Joseph’s tonight.” She states as she pours the last contents of wine into her glass. “And I am going to relax, I’ve had a long day. Have fun you two.” She kisses both of our cheeks before disappearing upstairs.

A goofy smile creeps onto my lips as I gaze at the stairway in which Ms. Irwin disappeared only moments before.

“What?” Ashton asked, walking up behind me and kissing my neck, as his arms found their way around my hips.

“I’m just glad I have you and your family.” I began. “You’re mother especially has been so kind to me over the past few weeks.” I swivelled around in his arms and locked eyes with his. He smiled so bright, inviting me to continue. “I want to thank her in some way.” My eyes were hopeful as I scanned my boyfriend’s eyes, begging to know what he was thinking.

“She would love that. And so would I.” I sighed with relief and wrapped my arms around Ashton, pulling him in close.

“Let’s do it tomorrow.” I smiled.

Tomorrow was now today.

I had just gotten off the phone with Trent, a young teen who had just happily allowed me to book my reservation for this evening.

“All good?” Ashton quizzed, his head popping out from the doorway.

“All sweet.” I smiled, crawling from my stomach as I sat on my butt, my legs dangling over the edge of my bed.

Well temporary bed.

Ashton stalked over and placed his body beside mine, our arms just brushing against each other. I fiddled with my phone as I stared down on at the carpeted floor.

My face dropped.

“Em?” Ashton’s voice was full of concern, his palm placed on my shoulder as he spoke. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m fine.” I reply, shrugging his hand off my shoulder and pushing myself up to my feet. I sauntered over to my wardrobe, flickering through my small amount of clothes I had taken from my old room.

Once Ashton had left the room, I tugged on my navy blue dress, adjusting the straps and hem as I eyed myself in the mirror.

I sighed, tucking some hair behind my ear and applying lip balm to my lips.

“Happy birthday Dad.” I whispered, glancing out my bedroom window. “I miss you.”
