11. Chapter XI

The sounds of light chatter awoke me from the lounge, as I unwrapped myself from Ashton's limp body and rubbing my eyes.

“Hey boys.” I smiled, pulling on my jumper I had taken off prior to my nap, as well as trying not to wake Ashton who was still sleeping underneath me. They all smiled and remained seated, all bar Calum. He told us he’d be back in a minute before scurrying out of the room.

“Are you going to resume the movie or,” Michael cocked, tilting his head to the side and smirked.

“Play it yourself.” I laughed, throwing him the controller before removing myself from the worn down couch and settling on the floor instead.

We ended up restarting Grown Up’s again, as me and Ashton had obviously only made it 15 minutes in before we passed out.

20 minutes had flown by and Calum was still nowhere to be seen, so I removed myself from the lounge room where I left a giggling Michael and Luke, as well as a sleeping Ashton, and found myself wandering into the kitchen.

Walking along the tiled floor froze my feet, as I headed towards the back door. Pushing it open slightly, I hugged my hoodie closer to my body as I peered outside, along the grass and back up onto the veranda, where my eyes met Calum’s.

“What are you doing out here?” I puffed, scattering towards him as he sat swinging on the chair my dad and I had built when I was little.

“Thinking.” He mumbled.

“About?” I enquired, staring at him as he stared at his phone clenched in his large hands.

“Us.” He breathed. “I miss us.”

“Calum.” I began, lost for words.

“Look.” He exclaimed, turning his phone so I could now see it.

It was a picture of us.

Memories came flooding my mind as I sat quiet, staring ahead of me, as I watched the light sprinkle of rain began watering the grass.

“Emily,” Calum began, inching closer towards me and sighing. “Do you remember this picture?”

I fluttered my eyes up to his, nodded slightly before staring down at my hands. “It was our one year anniversary.” I mumbled.

“Yes.” He sighed with relief. “Best tasting ice-cream on this planet.”

“Yeah.” I chuckled, stuffing my hands in my jumper pockets as I shifted myself so I could face Calum.

The swing still slightly swaying back and forth.

“Looked pretty adorable on your face too might I add.” He smiled, his eyes meeting mine.

I nudged his shoulder and laughed, as did I.

“Aren’t you cold?” I questioned, now taking in his appearance as he sat in front of me in jeans and a tee shirt.

“No are you kidding its like almost 25 degrees!” he laughed, throwing his head back.

“It’s also raining!” I yell, lurching forward onto his lap as I began poking him excessively in the chest.

“Ow stop that Em stop it, Em.” He went from playful Calum to stern Calum, grabbing my wrists and instantly ceased the actions I had previously been committing.

In an instant his lips had crashed onto mine, his warm lips moulding with my cold ones. Within a few seconds his lips were gone as he sat there, breathing heavily.

I didn’t even have time to kiss back.

If I would have even kissed back.

He loosened his grasp from around my wrists and pulled me off of him, placing me back down beside him.

I sat there frozen.

I didn’t know what to do.

What to say.

How to comprehend what just happened.

He ran his fingers through his dark hair as he hunched forward, elbows on knees, as he stared at the wooden deck. “We need to talk,” he whispered.

I nodded.
