3. Forgiving

A single teardrop feel onto the paper as Sophia read the last words of that letter. She wanted to move but her whole body was paralysed. She wasn't sure if she should scream or sob and mixture of both rose up in her chest. She glanced at the clock. 2:30 am. With one look at the time she felt her whole body suddenly become much heavier with weariness. She let her body fall back. She was asleep before her head hit the pillow, engulfed in her world of dreams that was now haunted by the ghost of her new found knowledge.

Sophia woke at 8:30 to the sound of her mother clearing in the lounge. For a moment she smiled, certain that this was another normal Saturday; then it crashed on her. She leapt out of bed as if were boiling and she rushed out of her room. She felt enraged with her mother. She took her father figure away from her and at that moment Sophia hated her. Ready to scream, Sophia came into the lounge but as soon as she say her mother she stopped. Karen was clearing away the bottles on the floor and singing ever so quietly to herself, but the words were hard to miss,

Near to you, I am healing,

But it's taking so long,

'Cause though he's gone

And you are wonderful,

It's hard to move on,

And before Sophia knew what she was doing she joined in,

Near to you, I am healing,

But it's taking so long,

'Cause though he's gone

And you are wonderful,

It's hard to move on,

Yet, I'm better near you.

And in that moment Sophia knew. She loved her Mother more than anything in the whole world. Yes, her mum had taken her father way but only because she loved her. She kept going when she thought everything was lost because all she wanted to do was be her Mum. And she had been the most fantastic Mum she could of ever imagined. When she was 4 and cried on the first day of her school her mum told her to be strong and everything would be ok. When she was 7 and broke her arm her mum never left her side. When she was 12 and broke up with her first boyfriend there was endless nights of comfort. And now at 16 she knew her mother couldn't care more then she already did. So while her mother had done something wrong Sophia did one of the best things she could of done. She forgived.

Karen gazed at her daughter. She knew she had read the letter because that's they only way she could of known those lyrics. She couldn't see if she was forgiven or not but part of her was dying inside as she waited. Sophia's mouth opened and Karen braced for the pain. Sophia's next words changed them both forever.

Yet, I'm better near you
