9. Facade

From: Alex White

To: Zayn Malik

Home safe, thanks for dinner

I click send as I enter my flat and call out to Amber. "Where were you?" She asks me as she puts on a kettle of tea.

"Dinner with Zayn," I answer. "Did I just say that?" I stop walking at the realization of my words.

"Yup," She smiles, sitting at on a stool. "Did you have fun?" She questions.

"Not really," I reply the memory coming back to me. "Jeremy showed up and Zayn had to save me again," I tell her the whole story including the "You're mine" thing that Jeremy kept saying.

"Are you okay?" She asks. I nod.

"Just shaken up a bit," I answer.

"Well what do you want to do tonight?" She inquires.

"Let's watch a movie together," I suggest. She nods in agreement and I make my way to the cabinet so I can make popcorn. We put on Twilight and curl up on the couch in duvets. When the movie finally ends we move to our own bedrooms.

"Good night," I call to her.

"Night," She replies.

In the morning there's a text on my mobile.

From: Jeremy Gilbert

To: Alex White

You won't be able to hide behind your body guard'd be best for you and him to just come back to me. I'll always know where you are Alex - and I like your nightie

I read the text through three times and then look out of my window to see Jeremy's car drive off down the street. My breathing quickens and I thank myself that I hadn't woken up sooner and changed.

I don't reply to the text and try to calm myself. I take a long, hot shower to relax my muscles, but still feel shaky when I come out. I get dressed for the day and then put on a kettle of water on the stove.

Other than my sister I have always kept to myself with this stuff - and I think the best thing would be to try and hide it from Amber at least for now. There's no need for both of us to worry when we don't have to.

I drink my tea and take some deep breaths, practicing my fake smile. Amber comes out of her room at 9:30. "You're ready all ready? How long have you been up?" She questions me, yawning as she pours herself a cup of tea.

"About an hour ago. I'm thinking I'm going to go early and just meet you there," I tell her, lacing my Osiris' so that I can go.

"Are you sure you don't wanna wait?" She asks.

"Yeah. I'm going to stop for a coffee. See you there," I grab my keys and walk out of the door before she can get a good look at my face and then start my car and zoom off.

I drive to Dunkin' Donuts and buy myself a large iced coffee. "Oh my gosh! Alexandria!" A girl's voice yells behind me. I turn to see a girl from my old school named Hannah.

"Hi Hannah. You know I would really love to stay and chat but I have to be getting to work sorry," I say politely and leave her there standing awestruck.

"Okay we'll catch up soon!" She calls to me as I get into my car and drive to the arena.

I enter the arena and everything is off - I'm all alone. With half an hour until work officially starts, I turn on all of the lights and climb up on stage. I play a song that I wrote and recorded on my computer as I dance to it. I run through my routine a couple of times before taking a break to catch my breath.

I hear clapping and look to see who's there. I make out a moving figure and see Zayn coming closer with all of the boys trailing behind. "We knew you could dance but wow," They compliment me.

"Thanks," I mutter, climbing off of the stage.

"I've never heard that song before. Do you know the name of it so that I can download it?" Harry asks me as they come closer.

"No and I forget the artist's name. Sorry," I lie.

"That's too bad. That girl's voice is really nice," Niall pouts. I shrug and take a sip of my coffee.

When I swallow I look up to see Zayn eyeing me. "Are you okay?" He inquires. I nod and smile.

"Just fine," I reply, making sure that my fake smile is in place and non-wavering. He smiles in return and then begins to walk away - I feel confident that my facade is working...until my sister shows up.
