Demon in the dark

You often hear stories about good and evil. It's always the same plot, light defeats dark, and it's not unusual to hear things from the evil point of view. But what if the scales are tipped. What if evil are gaining in power, getting stronger, ready to take the world for themselves. One life at a time.

2. Hatched

*50 years previous*

A sharp crack woke me. I was absorbed in darkness, but wait... a small sliver of light shone through a small zigzag. I tried to uncurl from the tight ball I was in, but found myself encased in a hard shell. I kicked a leg out in a desperate attempt to escape and a wall gave way exposing small dingy cave. Three men and a woman stood, gazing expectantly at me. I shoved away the rest of the shell that I had been grown in. A small shiver rippled down my spine as I stood up. One of them men ran over throwing some clothes at me, ‘Jeans... t-shirt’ said a small voice in my head. I quickly shoved them on and straightened up once more. I coughed once to clear my throat, “What’s going on?” I asked in a hesitant, raspy voice.

Instantly four evil grins broke across the faces of my guardians. The woman stepped forward, “I’m Amashtu... I’m your mother. And you, you are a demon.”

*End flashback*

We slowly waltzed out of the school, Drax leaving a trail of gasoline behind him with a jerry can. We finally reached the exit, where I cast a lazy look around at the bodies we were leaving behind. We might have got a little excited towards the end, once we were on a ‘soul high’. Scarlett spattered the walls, coating the brightly coloured posters advertising ‘The Prom’. A soft moan came from under a pile of dead. Our heads snapped in the direction, expert vision picking carefully through the haze of arms and legs for the source of the sound. With an idle flick of his hand, Drax sent the corpses flying, leaving a small shivering teenage girl behind. She looked about 14, only a year 9 really. “She’s yours if you want brother?” I shook my head, I had eaten so many souls that I had enough energy to keep me going for a few days. Drax shrugged nonchalantly, quickly summoning a fireball. We turned to face the girl, fear registering in her pale blue eyes. She started stuttering in protest but was quickly silenced by the fireball, going straight through her chest.

A silvery green orb floated out of her mouth, her soul. No! Sure we weren’t going to eat it, but I didn’t want it to live. I quickly shot a lightning bolt out of my finger, it struck the soul and it disappeared, leaving a small curl of ashy smoke. “Light it up Zaetal,” Drax hissed gently, a slight note of approval showing in his voice. I swiftly stole the silver lighter from his hand. Flicking it a few times, I touched it to the transparent trail at our feet. We soared back through the air, hurriedly getting out of the way of the inferno that had bloomed instantaneously.

We started towards the small forest that bordered the school but were stopped in our tracks by a shrill ringing. Drax reached a hand into his leather jacket, pulling out a black iPhone. “Drax, and Zaetal,” He answered quickly, putting the phone on speaker. “I need you back; I have an assignment for you.” Said a shady male voice from the other end. “On our way Lyke.” Drax hung up and shoved the phone back in his pocket. With a swift nod to me he disappeared. I hastily followed, transporting to the underworld.
