5. Chapter Four: A Threat I Won't Forget

(Emily's POV)

After the awkward conversation with Liam, I decided I was going to have my dad drive me to school. It was pretty awkward sitting in the passengers seat while my dad drove, but because I had gone from America to the United Kingdom, so my dad doesn't want me driving. I saw Liam's truck in the parking lot of the school, but I didn't see him anywhere. I saw a couple of his friends though, but I didn't know their names. "Emily!" I turned to see Ashley running towards me with a couple of other girls. Once they caught up we turned around and kept walking towards the school. "Emily, this is Jessica." She said pointing to a girl with brown hair.

"I'm in a lot of Honors classes with you." She said smiling.

"Oh yeah, I remember you." I said laughing, not paying attention to where I was going. Once I turned forward again, I almost ran right into Liam's chest.

"Emily I need to talk to you." All the girls around me dropped their smiles, and walked away like something was wrong.

"Um okay." Liam was very stiff, but he turned around and began walking away so I followed. He opened the doors to the theater room and we stood in the dark. It felt awkward. "What did you need to tell me?"

"I need you to do me a favor, and stay away from Justin."

"You don't have to tell me to stay away from him, he freaks me out anyways." I said crossing my arms and leaning against the wall. Liam put his hands on the wall beside my head, so I couldn't go anywhere.

"Promise me." His voice was frightening.

"I promise." I said looking into his eyes. Then Liam opened the doors and walked out leaving me in the dark. I looked around and the place sent shivers up my spine. Liam knew something I didn't and it was really bothering me.

(Liam's POV)

"Liam!" I got out of my truck, and turned to Niall who had called my name. I could tell he was was still a little drunk. I walked up to him. "Justin wants to talk to you." I looked over at Justin's car and he was leaned against it, with his arms crossed, staring at me. His stare was broken when Emily's dad drove past. I hid by the side of Niall's car. I grabbed Niall's arm and pulled him next to me. "About what?"

Emily turned looking for me, and luckily she didn't notice me. Niall looked over at the crowd of girls surrounding Emily before turning back to me. "Emily." As soon as Emily walked into the school, I walked over to Justin and he had a smirk on his face. My fists clenched.

"What the hell do you want."

"Good fight last night, how's Niall doing? Not any broken ribs or anything?" He said laughing.

"You're lucky you weren't there, or you'd have more than just a broken rib." I said crossing my arms across my chest so I wouldn't throw punches at him.

"Sorry I missed, I figured I'd better plan some fun with some of my friends." He smiled at me then. "You know Emily is a beautiful girl."

"You're not bringing her into any of this, this is between my gang and your gang."

"Yes, but she's part of the fun." One of Justin's men jumped the hood of his car and stood next to Justin.

"If you touch her I won't hesitate to break every bone in your body."

"Maybe it will be to late?" He said laughing. I went to go throw a punch at him, but Harry came up to me grabbing me by my arms and pulling me back.

"Don't fight here, go to her." Harry said whispering into my ear. I nodded, staring at Justin a few more seconds before rushing into the school. I couldn't find her for a while, but as soon as I found her, I stood in front of her. She almost ran into me, but as soon as she stopped all of her friends started to walk off.

"Emily I need to talk to you." Her friends knew who I was, and I'm surprised nobody had told Emily yet.

"Um okay." My stomach tightened, so I turned around and started walking towards the theater. She followed behind me, and I opened the doors standing in front of her. It was dark, but I could still make out her face. "What did you need to tell me?"

"I need you to do me a favor, and stay away from Justin.

"You don't have to tell me to stay away from him, he freaks me out anyways." She crossed her arms across her chest, with her books in her hand, and then leaned against the wall. I put my hands on the wall beside her head so she's listen to me.

"Promise me." I almost choked on my words thinking of what Justin was capable of.

"I promise." She said looking into my eyes. Knowing that she wouldn't break the promise. I pushed opened the doors and walked off. Hearing her say she would promise to stay away from Justin took so much weight off my back. But she had no strength in her compared to Justin, and thinking about what he could do or would do sent shivers up my back.

(Emily's POV)

In every class period that I had with Justin, I caught him staring at me. I didn't know what he was thinking, but I stayed away because I didn't want to find out. In each class so many people would be talking to me, but my stare wouldn't leave Justin's. Something about him scared me, and I knew he had a dark side. He probably didn't even have a good side. His smirk told me everything, and I didn't like him at all. "Emily, do you and Justin have a thing or something?" Ashley said laughing.

"Oh ugh no." I said looking away embarrassed.

"You guys have stared at each other for the whole class period, I think he likes you."

"Yeah, well I definitely don't like him." Ashley laughed, then Jessica joined in.

"I wouldn't date him, he has a gang." Jessica said, turning around to face me.

"A gang? I didn't think Wolverhampton had any gangs." Ashley and Jessica laughed.

"Look at Justin's pocket." Jessica said pointing. I could see the back end, and the trigger of a small gun.

"They don't get in trouble for carrying guns around school?" I asked, remembering how a kid in my school got arrested for having a rifle in his truck, that was in the school parking lot. He was just using it to go hunting after school.

"No, they teachers don't care as long as they leave it in their pocket." I shivered as soon as Jessica said no,  I couldn't stop thinking about the gangs. And the thought of a gun just reminded me of my mom.

"Emily are you okay?" Ashley said, and then I noticed that my eyes were watering.

"Yeah sorry." I said wiping the tears away. Some people looked back at us, and I tried to cover up my face.

"What's wrong?" Jessica asked worried. "I didn't mean to scare you, if I did."

"You didn't, it's just personal." I said mumbling.

The bell rang, and I quickly walked out of the classroom. I found Liam at his locker, and I quickly walked up to him. "Liam, can we hang out after school again?"

"I have plans." I crossed my arms and rested my shoulder on the locker next to his.

"Please, I need to talk to you."

"Talk to me at lunch then." I felt like he was trying to push me away.

"In a private area." He closed his locker and looked at me.

"I'm busy, didn't you hear me the first time?" He turned and walked off and I felt awkward. He had been acting weird ever since last night, and I felt like it was my fault. Maybe he thought I didn't trust him because of what happened that night at supper. I watched him walk down the hallway before Justin stepped in front of me. I stepped back startled a little.

"Hey beautiful." He said smiling. I shook my head thinking of the promise I made with Liam. I went to walked past him, but he grabbed my arm. I noticed Niall near by, and he quickly grabbed Justin's hand twisting it behind his back and kneeing him in the stomach. I was confused by all the violence this place had and it was freaking me out. I walked away not wanting to watch Niall or anybody else fight.

The rest of the day at school was boring, and when I got home I started unpacking more stuff. I heard the doorbell ring and I quickly rushed to the bathroom to check my hair. I crossed my fingers it was Liam, but when I opened the door I froze. It wasn't Liam. It was him, the one person I didn't want to see. Justin. How did he know I lived here? "Nice house." He said walking inside.

"Get out." I said leaving the door open so he could leave.

"Oh come on Emily." He said, walking up to a picture frame of me and my mother that was hanging on the wall.

"Don't touch anything." I said walking over to him, getting angry. "Just leave."

"Aw is this you and your mother?" He said taking the picture frame off the wall. I went to go grab it , but he held it in the air so I could reach it.

"Give me it!" I said punching him in the chest.

"Okay, come and get it." He quickly pushed me back and threw the picture frame at the wall. I froze, suddenly getting scared.

"Why the hell would you do that?!" I said pushing him. "Just get out!" I was so angry I couldn't even cry. Justin smirked and grabbed on my arms. He leaned close to my face but I pushed my face away. I struggled against his grip. He pushed me up against the wall, and leaned against me his body weight to heavy for me to push him off. He grabbed onto the side of my face, and leaned in close to me. I struggled to move my face away. I quickly brought my knee up to his stomach, and he moved backwards from me. "Get out!"

"You shouldn't have done that." He said, coming towards me, my face went pale and I ran upstairs as he followed me. I slammed my door, and locked it. He charged at my door, and I could hear it breaking, I quickly shuffled through my homework looking for my phone. I called Liam, not knowing what else to do. I pushed my a wooden chair up against the door, under the knob.

"Fine you want to be like this." I heard him walk off, and Liam anwsered the phone.

"Liam please, I need you to come over."

"Emily, I'm busy."

"Justin's here, and I don't know what to do." I heard breaking glass shattering down stairs, and each time something broke I jumped.

Liam didn't respond, he just hung up. I took the chair from under the door, and leaned in close to hear what was going on. I didn't know if Liam was coming, but I had a gut feeling he would. It went quite outside, so I slowly opened the door, I peeked out and saw somebody's foot. I slammed the door once again, and I didn't know if it was Justin or Liam but they began to break through the door. Eventually pushing through I stumbled forward but they grabbed my hand and helped me catch my balance. I looked up and saw Liam. I smiled and threw my arms around his neck hugging him. "I thought you were busy." I said letting out a huff of air.

"I had chores."

"Where's Justin?" I said pulling away.

"He ran off." I then remembered that he was destroying things downstairs. I pushed past Liam, and ran down the stairs to see the house completely ruined. All the pictures on the wall, smashed. Wine glasses that were hung upside down by the cabinets, destroyed. And my mothers China set, was also ruined. I sat down on the last stair looking at the kitchen. Liam came up behind me, and sat down next to me rubbing my back. "This is all my fault." Liam said running his hands through his hair. "I wasn't even that busy."

"It's not your fault." I said, my eyes filling with tears. I got up walking over to the home phone.

"What are you doing?"

"What's the number to call the police?" My eyes were watering, and I felt like crying.

"There's no point in calling, they'll just ignore your report." He said grabbing the phone and putting it back on the wall. He grabbed my waist and pulled him close to him.

"He ruined all my memories." I looked down, and by Liam's foot I saw a picture ripped in half, the one of my mom and me. I pulled away and and bent down and picked up the picture. Liam took it form me, and put the two pieces together. My mom had her arm around me and we were down at the beach making a sand castle for my birthday. I was like 12.

"You look just like your mom." He said laughing a little.

"I miss her." Liam put his arm around me.

"We should get this place cleaned up." Liam said looking around the room.

"I wonder what my dad will say." I said running my fingers through my hair. "My moms China set is ruined, he's going to be so mad."

"Tell him somebody broke in while nobody was home." Liam started picking up and sweeping the broken glass.

"I won't even have the guts to tell him."

"It'll be okay, I'll stay here with you." He grabbed the trashcan and began throwing broken glass into it.

"Thanks." It took us a while, and as soon as we finished up my dad came home. He was in a bad mood from a bad day at work, but he's determined to figure out who did this. I told him that this happened while we were both gone, and so he skipped supper. He kept glaring at Liam while I explained it to him, and I think he thinks that Liam did it.

Liam stayed over till late, and we sat in my bedroom talking. "Liam, can I trust you with what happened to my mom?"

"If you don't want to tell me you don't have to, but I'll listen." I grabbed a pillow and pulled in next to me. The memories began coming to my head, and my skin went pale. "You look sick." Liam said putting his hand to my head. "Are you okay?"

"Sorry, it's just hard."

"Then don't tell me now." He said laying down on my bed.

"But I want to." I laid down next to him, and he pulled himself closer to me.

"Here." He held out his hand.

"What?" I said confused.

"Take my hand, and then when you get scared or sad, just squeeze it." I took his hand then, holding it close to me.

I took a deep breath, and thought about what to say first. "I was at the store with my mom getting some food. I was going to have a birthday party, and so we were buying pop and stuff." My grip tightened on Liam's hand. "We ugh were back in the freezer section, when somebody came over on the intercom, screaming and threatening us." I remembered how a little boy next to us was crying. "My mom and I hid behind some fruit, while some guys with guns were coming around. We saw an Employees only door, and we ran for it. It was locked though and we were trying to break the lock on it. But-." I stopped and closed my eyes and choked down the tears. "They shot her and I watched her die." Liam quickly sat up pulling me close to him and I cried and cried.

My dad came into my room, obviously hearing our conversation. But before he could talk, I had fallen asleep. With Liam close to me.

(Liam's POV)

"I watched her die." I sat up grabbing Emily and I pulled her close to me. She cried into my chest, thankfully falling asleep. But her dad came inside.

"She was heartbroken when she died." He said, I looked up, and carefully picked up Emily, setting her back down in bed. "You know, if she had the guts to tell you about what happened, she clearly sees something in you."

"She's just a friend, and I just met her." I sat down next to her, wiping away her tears that were rolling down her face.

"Liam, I trust you to protect my daughter, and I know you know what happened today." I stiffened. "You don't have to tell me, but I just want to thank you for being there for her."

"It's my pleasure sir." I said standing up. He held out a hand, and I shook it carefully. He had a firm hand grip, and it surprised me for a second.

"Liam, I know who you are, and I know your history, but I'm not going to let that bother me. But if anything happens to my daughter-." I cut him off.

"I won't let anything happen to her, but don't bring up my past when you weren't here to witness it." I walked past him, and out of the house. I knew what I said was rude, and that might make me look bad. But my past is my past, and if he seriously wants to judge me on my past I don't want to be there to hear it. I walked inside, and my mom was sitting on a rocking chair reading a newspaper. When I took my shoes off, she put the newspaper down and looked at me.

"The school called me today." She said standing up and crossing her arms.

"About what."

"You're not going to graduate, if you don't start working on your grades." She looked worried.

"Fine then I'll drop out and move in with dad, and get a Mechanical job there." I said shrugging.

"Please Liam, I don't want you to be like your father, I want you to be successful."

"Just stay out of my life mum." I walked back upstairs and laid down on my bed. Then my conversation with Justin got into my head.

"Sorry I missed, I figured I'd better plan some fun with some of my friends, you know Emily is a beautiful girl."

"You're not bringing her into any of this, this is between my gang and your gang."

"Yes, but she's part of the fun."

I shook the thought out of my head, and tried to fall asleep. Thankfully tomorrow was a weekend, because I was up all night. Thinking about one person. Emily.
