28. The Summoning

We sat in the front seat of Liam's car staring out at the compound before us.

"You don't have to do this Liam. I know this place holds some bad memories." I said.

I didn't want him thinking he would be forced into this. He hadn't stepped foot here in years, and it wouldn't be fair to ask him to go in and face all of them. He looked at me with a hint of humor in his eyes.

"You really think I would allow you to face this alone? Come on love, it's now or never."

He came to my side of the car and opened the door. He offered me his arm and escorted me into the building. I held my head high. As soon as we entered hundreds of eyes turned toward us. People began whispering about us, obviously we have been the talk of the compound. I walked straight ahead and to the door with mark they put on the envelopes for summoning's. A man at the door opened it for us and as we entered heard the door slam behind us.

Upon entering the room a large table stood at the back of the room. Liam knew protocol and let me advance on my own. I walked to the center of the room and faced the table. Brandon, and Grandmaster Smith sat there along with some older vampire I didn't know the name of. One of the men stood up and his voice boomed across the room:

"Jane Marie Brown, you stand accused of turning a mortal into a vampire without obtaining permission from the council. What is your plea?"

"I Jane Brown, plea not guilty to these accusations and would like to request a seer."

The man sat and nodded his head. He waved to a man at the back at the door opened. This was the time in the trial where the accuser entered the room and gave his or her argument before the defense. As I turned Courtney walked in. She kept looking straight ahead and is if she did not even want to be here. The same man stood again:

"Courtney Margaret Love, you stand before the council accusing Jane Marie Brown of changing a mortal into a vampire. Do you confirm this?"

"Yes I do." Courtney spoke loudly and clearly.

Why was I not surprised it was her? The elders began to converse among each other. They told me my request for a seer was accepted and waved another man into the room. This man was tall, and older with a long grey beard and red robes. He walked between me and Courtney and took her hand first. He asked her to clear her mind and think very clearly on what he was to see. Whatever it maybe is a mystery to me. Once he released her he walked to the table and one by one made contact with each member of the council, showing them what he had seen. One by one they all looked at me with warning glares. As if saying there was no way for me to prove my innocence. The seer took step back and faced me. He grabbed me by the hand, he told me to clear my head think clearly of what I wanted him to see. I chose the night Courtney had made her attempt to kiss Zayn. Everything before the date. The entire day, hopefully something there would show them I was innocent. Once he severed contact he walked to the council and showed each of them. Without a second thought they all stood:

"Take each of them to the holding cells. We will return with our decision."

Liam and I were taken to room, and Courtney to a different one. We sat there in silence too scared to say anything and not wanting to get hopes up. Until we saw a note slide under the door. I quickly grabbed it and read it.

Meet the one you love. Soon you will lose. Remember what you were told. Our lives are lies. Spot the lie and all is well.

I didn't have time to understand it, when the door opened and we were told they had come to a decision. I walked into the room and saw Courtney already there. The man stood up and spoke:

"The council has reached a verdict. We see the defendant Jane Marie Brown, innocent. The prosecutor Courtney Margaret Love is now being held for bringing knowingly false charges upon one of our own. The verdict of the punishment will be left to the defendant."

Two men came and grabbed Courtney by the arms and held her so she couldn't run. She looked to Brandon with pleading eyes as if he could stop this.

"Ms. Brown, her life is in your hands. You have two options death, or freedom. The choice is yours."

I sat there and thought for a moment. She had caused me so much pain and trouble over the years, and to finally be rid of her? But that wasn't who I was. I wasn't a cold blooded killer. When I looked at her she had this look of desperation. I turned and looked to the council.

"Let her live." I spoke loud and clear.

I turned towards Courtney and bent to eye level.

"Remember this little lesson here. The next person you bring to trial might not be as forgiving."

As I turned to leave I stopped dead in my tracks. I wasn't even sure I was breathing.

Brandon was in front of me, bent on one knee, with a ring in his hand.
