9. Chapter 9

That night, Dilly was smarter. With Sam's words still ringing in her ears, she ordered two kids keep watch over the camp at all times. They switched every hour. In the morning, everyone had jobs to do; some were made to collect firewood, some were learning to hunt, others to fish. They lived like this for some time, until disaster struck.

Dilly hadn't seen Sam since their meeting on the edge of the forest and she was beginning to wonder whether she had imagined him.  However, one day he turned up at the camp. The kids on guard were startled to see another human being that wasn't in the wreck with them. No one knew about Sam, seeing as Dilly hadn't told anyone about their encounter for fear she had imagined it. When Sam walked through the camp to where Dilly's back was turned to him, 99% of the girls dropped what they were holding, stopped what they were doing, to stare at his six-pack, his well-built legs, his robust arms. From throughout the camp came whispers from the girls and even some of the boys.

"Wow, he is sooo cute! I mean look at his face... and that physique!"

"I bagsy him,"

"Shut up! He's not your type. Me, however..."

"Oh my God, look at those muscles..."

As he reached Dilly, she turned, gasped and threw her arms around his neck. She knew Sam felt the same way about her as she did about him. It was unexplainable, but obvious. He wrapped his arms around her waist and buried his sweet, flawless face into her hair.

"Hey, Dilly," he whispered in her ear.

"Hey Sam." They pulled away and grinned at each other. This time it wasn't Dilly who was scowling, it was all of the other girls on the island. But, to be honest, Dilly stopped scowling so much; the island had changed her. She had a purpose, something to be getting on with. Sam looked at her, his expression going from happy to anxious.

"Dilly, listen. Something bad's going to happen. The cur...umm.. anywhere we can go to talk alone?" "What's the matter, Sam?" Dilly was worried now. Sam had kept his promise, they had met again. But he came bearing bad news. Sam led Dilly out of the camp. Dilly's heart skipped a beat and she couldn't help but notice that they were holding hands. Suddenly, she felt very self-conscious; she was wearing purple shorts, a white top and flip-flops. She flattened her top with her free hand.

"Dilly, I know this is gonna be hard to believe, but you have to trust me." She was beginning to get a bit scared. What was going on? Why was Sam acting like this?

"Ok, here goes. This... this island. It's... cursed. And I don't mean metaphorically. It's literally cursed." What? What was he talking about?

He knows some sophisticated words seeing as he's lived on this island for I don't know how long. Really?! The boy I have a major crush on has just told me the island that we live on is cursed. And all I can think about is why he knows words like that? My god, I'm stupider than I thought.

"What do you mean?" Sam explained to her about the curse on the island. Thousands of years ago, a mortal angered Neptune, God of The Sea. The mortal lived on the island, so Neptune cursed it; vowing that everything he held dear would be destroyed. Everyone that had lived on the island before has had something or someone they loved, ripped away from them.

"I know, you think I'm a crazy, messed-up, delusional boy who's lived here for too long," Sam sighed. Dilly made up her doubtful mind, there and then.

"No. I don't think you're crazy. In fact, I believe you."

"You do? Thanks," He hugged Dilly and again, and it was as if her heart stopped beating.
