5. Chapter 5

Oh. Mygod. Noah! Oh no, I bet my hair's a mess! Oh, why didn't I brush it before I left?

As she saw Noah up at the top deck, Eve ran her fingers through her slightly knotted hair and smoothed her skirt. Sneaking a few glances at him, she noticed how his hair shone in the sunlight. So dreamy. Not many girls would have given him a second glance, but Eve, Eve was head over heels. Noah was considered as an 'unknown' at his school. He kept low profile. He was bright, but not a brain. He was funny, but not a comedian. He was good-looking, but not so that girls thought of him as a hottie. But to Eve, he was perfect. He was also pretty much the only thing that kept her grasping on to a thread of reality. After 10 minutes of stealing gazes at Noah, a girl of about 14 stepped up to the platform. The crowd hushed.

"Is this it?" She asked, looking worried. Eve recognised her as Dilly. Dilly Ivythorne, the captains senior assistant managers daughter. Will Ivythorne; he was nice, as far as Eve recalled.

"Is everyone sure that there was no one else in your cabins or in the corridors? N... no adults?" Eve was startled. She looked around disbelievingly, as did many others; Dilly was right. There were no adults; just a gaggle of anxious children.

Oh dear lord. It is like Gone. No adults? What else could have happened? But I wonder who could be Little Pete...? He's the one that causes all of the adults to disappear.

The noise was going up again as kids realized that they were alone and what were they going to do?! Dilly had told everyone to stay calm and was now talking to a small group of kids. Eve skimmed the crowd. Most kids were huddled in meagre parties, though some were wandering aimlessly, alone. Eve was one of the latter. As was Noah. As Eve turned slowly and shifted her gaze on a small scale, her hazel eyes fell on the boy. Who, by the way, was watching her intently. When Eve's eyes came to a stop on him, Noah made an abrupt turn and strode away.

Oh no, what did I do? Did he see me looking at him? Oh no, oh no, oh no! I'm such a... a.... a bozo! Cursing herself under her breath, Eve traipsed towards Dilly and the kids crowding around her.

"But it makes no sense at all!" Dilly had her arms crossed, her eyes were narrow, her face skeptical. "I know but we're just gonna have to accept that it is happening . We have to find a way to deal with it." Oreo was handing round a packet of Oreos, when he noticed the girl approach. She was small, with long, wavy dark hair. Her olive coloured skin and hazel eyes made her look Italian, which was, in fact, her origin. She was very pretty. Oreo held out the packet to her, and she took one gratefully, ascending towards him. Her smile was really cute with small, doll-like teeth. That smile made her face glow. Oreo looked back at Dilly, who was shaking her head in disbelief.

"We need to get off this ship."  A soft voice from the back of the congregation caught everyone's attention. Eve stepped forward.

"If we don't, people will get worried. They need a leader. Anyway, it's obvious the ship's damaged, it could sink at any moment. We kinda don't wanna be on it when it goes down, now do we?" She flashed her smile. Lots of boys just melted. Dilly scowled, but she liked this kid, she was smart. "Alright then." Dilly waltzed up to the stand where the microphone was set up. "Oi. Listen up everyone. We're leaving the ship. Every person must bring a bag of food and a small bag with a couple of changes of clothes. Grab any fresh food as well as sweets. Otherwise the fresh stuff'll go off and we have no idea how long we'll be on this island." She paused to make sure everyone was still following her.

"You have 10 minutes, if you're not back, you're on your own."
