Deus Ex

               "Wake up number thirty-four."

"No!" I shouted, sitting bolt upright.

"Number thirty-four?" The voice echoed in my head.

I had fainted on the bathroom floor. I rubbed my shoulder to feel the scar I'd gotten as a kid, but it was gone.

                "How's this possible?" I whispered.

I raised my hand to grab onto the sink as I tried to pick myself off the cold floor. For an instant I lost balance and almost tripped over my own feet. Then, it occurred to me to examine my eyes and I looked up to see my face in the mirror. Indistinct colors swirled around both irises. Hints of red, blue and black appeared. For a split second they formed the shape of the CEO's emblem (four waning moons and a cross in the middle) and vanished, leaving only my natural hazel color.

"Subject thirty-four. You've been given a second chance." A woman talked, her voice resounding in the corridor.

"Who are you? what's going on?" I yelled and opened the bathroom door.

"That information is irrelevant." Said the woman. "You've been given a rare second chance. Your key to survive depends on you. The only rule is kill or be killed. The choice is yours."

"Kill or be killed? What? Is this a joke?" I looked around to check for hidden cameras.

"Good luck. And may peace prevail evermore." Concluded the woman in a more soothing tone.

I began to suffocate in my own thoughts and fear. "Wait!"

I was in my house or a replica of it. Across the hallway was the isometric drawing, only the golden signature was missing. I turned on the plasma TV and immediately channel 10019 appeared. The major was speaking live to the citizens of Detroit.

"As you may already know, today marks the day of a new era. A human disobeyed the law, but we've given her a second chance, to show you all that being one of us is a privilege, hence she must earn it." The major pointed at the screen and I saw myself live on TV as well.

"All this human ought to do is survive our challenge. Let this be a remainder for you too. If you don't abide by the rules, this could happen to you. Farewell and may peace prevail evermore." He finished his speech and gave a wicked smile.

I stepped back and sat on the sofa. The TV turned itself off and all the lights went out.

I felt sick to my stomach. The government had too much power over the citizens. The whole world will be watching when I stop breathing, simply because I refused to follow their seemingly perfect laws.

My watch gave a silent beep, announcing that it was 8 p.m. Approximately fourteen hours since Dmetrei died.

A loud sudden noise came from the kitchen, but I ignored it until I heard the abrupt footsteps. A form scuttled toward the living room across the corridor. I immediately dropped to the floor.

The silhouette paused for a moment.

"Come out, come out, wherever you are!" Aria was behind the sofa, her image reflected on the TV screen. She was holding a long blade.

"I just want to talk to you Trinity Reed."

I was about to expose myself when I realized there was something wrong. Aria would never call me by my full name.

This can't be happening, I told myself. I felt betrayed and my heart ached. I loved Aria like my own sister and now she's my predator. There's only one possible and reasonable explanation, she's being controlled by them.

"Trinity? You know, I've been thinking. My father adopted you because he had no choice. He never loved you and he never will." Aria's eyes shimmered a beautiful red color that projected onto the TV screen. She turned around and slowly began to walk upstairs.

I stood up rapidly and silently made my way to the guest room. Suddenly a cold hand grabbed my shoulder from behind and quickly closed my mouth.

Unable to scream, I bit the hand that covered my nose as well.

"Jesus C.. Trinity, it's me Jensen."  His facial features looked like Dmetrei's, perfectly beautiful and his body seemed healthier.

"I'm sorry, what are you doing here?" I inquired.

Jensen stared at me, still holding my right hand. "I woke in my basement, only it wasn't my basement. Things were different."

"Whoa! You've changed a lot. Your eyes are different." He added as he let go of my hand.

I blinked. "What are you talking about?" I asked a bit perplexed.

"Never mind. We have to kill her." He looked up.

                    "She's my sister!" I asserted.

"You heard what the woman said. Kill or be killed. I tried to get out, but the doors and windows can only be opened from the outside." He said affirmatively.

"She's coming! Hide." I said inaudibly low.

Jensen hid behind a long gray satin curtain and I slid under the guest bed. Jensen signaled to keep myself silent.

Aria entered the guest room and stopped sauntering in front of the bed. "Trinity! I'm tired of this dumb game.". She sat on the bed and released a sharp scythe.

Each second that passed made Aria more sure to killing me. I closed my eyes trying to remember what being seven was like, what our childhood used to be. I remembered how much we enjoyed our favorite game of hide-and-seek. I tried to forget about the woman's terrible ultimatum.

I also remembered Dmetrei and my first kiss at a Halloween party. I dressed up as a zombie cheerleader and Dmetrei as Dracula.

It was past midnight. All the humans from my junior class had gathered together and formed a circle around a bottle. I knelt next to Aria who was dressed up as the Devil.

"Your turn Trinity." Aria passed me the bottle.

Feeling a little awkward, I placed the bottle on the floor in the center of the circle. The bottle began to spin and gradually stopped moving, pointing to Dmetrei.

"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" My friends clapped, making a riot.

I approached him feeling utterly embarrassed. The rest of the world was a blur. The noise ceased and I felt like the only girl in the room.

I remained in silence with my head a few inches away from Aria's boots.

She bent down and looked under the bed. "As long as you live, I'm doomed to die. I won't let that happen." I jumped at her words. I peered into her eyes which had a more intense shade of brown, and she grinned when I screamed for help.

Pulling from my dark blond hair, Aria dragged me from under the bed and yanked my arm.

Tears welled from my eyes. "Aria! It's me, your sister."

I looked into Aria's eyes again. searching for some sign that she was being controlled. But the intense look on her face held firm. She wasn't being controlled.
