Scarlett's Story (A Death Note Fan Fiction)

Scarlett was raised at Wammy's, and after many years, L has come into contact with her again! She leaves her friends to help with the Kira case, but is that it? Or are they all going to see each other again?

8. Waterfalls

Everyone seemed to be leaning in favour of Kira; even the US president declared that they would no longer oppose him! They were cowards. I didn’t think they deserved us trying to protect them by chasing Kira.

A long time had passed when I was just close to snapping.

Kyomi Takada, Kira’s new spokesperson, annoyed me so much. I was sent to make sure that nothing happened to her. Even if she died, it was no skin of my back. I was sitting in the car, watching her, when a vaguely familiar, red sports car raced into view and shot some kind of smokescreen into the crowd.

“Following the red car. If I get the chance should I arrest him?” I asked into my headset.

“Yes.” Came Light’s calm agreement.

I followed at a slight distance to avoid suspicion. Suddenly, I remembered why the car was so familiar. It was the same one Matt drove in my dream when I was unconscious! Could Matt really be in there?

Eventually, he got surrounded by police cars. This wasn’t good! He came out, arms raised, telling the police that he was involved in the whole thing. What was he doing? The officers had guns.

“Stop!” I shouted, “Don’t shoot!”

I grabbed my fake police ID and ran to Matt and quickly blindfolded and handcuffed him. I guided him to the passenger seat and set his car up to be towed by mine. I hopped into the driver’s seat and floored it.

I drove for a while until I was sure that no one had followed us.

“I know I’ve been looking for you, but I never pictured our little reunion like this.” I admitted as I removed his blindfold.

His jaw dropped once he realized that I was his saviour.

“S-Scar? Is it really you?” He asked in disbelief.

“Yeah, Matty,” I smiled, “it’s really me.”

In his eyes, I could see countless emotions he had felt over the years, most likely towards me. Sadness, anger, shock, betrayal. But there were some I couldn’t quite label. Was it… regret? Was that other one something a little more like…? No. No way. Matt didn’t love me. How could he? After what I did?

I clicked the button on my headset.

“Light? Change of plan. I quit the task force.”

“What? But we still have to meet with Near.”

“I know. I still quit.” I repeated, “I’ll get my things tomorrow.”

With that, I pulled the headset off of me, chucked it out the window, and ran over it.

“Where’s Mello?” I asked. Matt just stared at me. “Come on! He could die! We have to help him!”

He gave me instructions and I drove as fast as I could. Just my luck; the car ran out of fuel. We went to the nearest gas station to fill up. While Matt went in to pay, I turned on the radio to see if anything had happened to Mello. The news I received wasn’t what I was hoping for. Not at all. Mello had burned to death.

I fought back tears once again, but they won. Mello was dead, and he had died hating my guts. L, Mello… everyone I loved was gone. No, I still had Matt. In fact, I was the reason Matt was alive now. Hopefully Mello had heard that someone had intervened and hated me just a little less.

When Matt returned to the car, he sat in silence for a moment, tears forming behind his goggles.

“Scarlett…” He whispered, “Mello is…he’s…”

“I know.” I whispered back, stopping him before he had to say it.

I couldn’t take it any longer. I wrapped my arms around him, looking for some kind of comfort.

Finally, I let it all out. Tears that had built up inside me for years all came down like waterfalls into Matts shoulder. Once I had run dry, I just sat there in his arms, willing the pain to go away. But it didn’t. It couldn’t. And it never would.
