3. Old Friends

“Get out of the car!” The man demanded again, “And bring the notebook!”

Higuchi’s eyes were wide with fear.

“Take it!” He called as he through a small briefcase at me.

I took it in shaking hands and opened the door of the car. Higuchi had a gun to his head and called to the officers to stay back or he would shoot himself. There was no chance for him anymore.

“Put that helmet on and get on!” He demanded, one hand on the handlebars, the other holding the gun to my head.

I did as he asked, what else was I supposed to do?

He revved the engine and the spotlight from the helicopter fixed on us. My rescuer, I suppose I could call him, pulled something that seemed a lot like a bomb out of his clothes, pulled out the peg, and smashed it against the road. A white smoke filled the road, so thick that I could barely see what was in front of me. I wrapped my arms around him as he shot forward.

He headed straight for the flames and soon sped through them! It seemed that they weren’t flames after all as I wasn’t burned at all. The man looked up at the helicopter in hot pursuit and he swerved into the traffic and down a deserted, narrow alley. We were clearly out of sight from the helicopter and we soon came to the warehouse district and I saw the dim glow of the city lights of the river. We were alone.

Once we reached the docks, the bike stopped and I got off as quickly as I could, still holding the briefcase. How I had managed to hold onto it all this time I didn’t quite know. He held the gun to my head again.

“Don’t make any sudden movements! I don’t want to have to shoot you; all I want is the notebook.”

He pulled off his helmet and suddenly I knew who it was. It was Mello! His hair was longer than I remembered it, but it was still obviously him. Slowly, I pulled off my helmet and my wig. I looked up at him and I saw the recognition dawn on his face.

“S-Scar?” Mello’s hand holding the gun lowered slightly.

“My partner and I will be making our getaway on a speed boat with the notebook. And I know that you won’t go running off.” He raised the gun back to my head.

“You haven’t changed.” I whispered, barely audible above the sound of the water.

His eyes were focussed on something behind me. Suddenly frightened again, I turned around to see what he was looking at.

A small figure with white hair was walking towards the two of us. I could tell straight away that it was Near.

“Near…” Mello’s voice was full of angst, “What are you doing here? You’ve come to take the notebook haven’t you?”

I was amazed at how quickly he lost his temper, where Near seemed so calm. Before he could answer, however, the red car from the freeway appeared with sirens whirring in the background. To my shock, Matt leant out of the window, not recognising me.

“Mello, we really need to move it.” He spoke calmly, as if he didn’t know that his life was in danger.

“Change of plans.” Mello replied as he shoved me towards Near and got back on his bike. “Keep them safe Near.”

And with that, he drove off, with Matt following behind.

My head was throbbing even more and I collapsed. I fell against the hard concrete and, looking up, saw some of the investigators I had worked with run towards me. Then the pain seemed to go away and I felt my eyes droop.
