Scarlett's Story (A Death Note Fan Fiction)

Scarlett was raised at Wammy's, and after many years, L has come into contact with her again! She leaves her friends to help with the Kira case, but is that it? Or are they all going to see each other again?

1. My Beginning

I remember it all really well, even though it was years ago. It was a short while after all of those heart attacks started to be called the Kira Murders. I was still at Wammy’s house at the time. Everything was so different back then; I’d give anything for things to go back in time. But that’s impossible.

I walked into my dorm and collapsed on my bed. I had been caught stealing Mello’s chocolate and he wasn’t going to let me get away with that. We were only playing though, it’s not like I was seriously hurt or anything. My Brown hair was sticking out in the most random places after our encounter. I was rubbing at a bruise on my forearm when a voice made me jump.

“You’re back late, Scarlett.” It was Near, my roommate.

“Dude, don’t scare me like that!” I gave him a playful shove.

I was just telling Near what happened when the door opened. Rodger stood in the doorway, looking at the two of us.

“Scarlett, L wishes to speak to you.”

I scrambled off my bed and ran to the door. L? We hadn’t been in contact for years! But, why now though?

By the time we reached Rodgers office I had so many questions that I had to keep to myself for now, I doubted that Rodger would know the answer to any of them. A computer screen showing a black, calligraphic L on a white background was on Rodgers desk I beamed and practically ran to it.

“L! What’s happening?” I asked as soon as I was in front of the screen.

“Calm down, Scarlett.” Came the reply that had clearly been passed through a voice changer.

My smile fell instantly.

“I can’t even hear your real voice anymore?”

There was a soft click and I knew that L had turned off the voice changer.

“The truth is, I need some help.” I couldn’t help but smile at the sound of his voice.

“The great L needs my help, what an honour!” I teased.

“As you may know, the Japanese Task Force and I have paired up to catch Kira. But it is an extremely small group now and I feel that a fresh pair of eyes may help with the investigation. A plane will come to take you to Japan first thing tomorrow morning. If you do want to help me that is.”

My green eyes went wide. L needed my help!

“Yes! Of course I want to help!” I got as close to the screen as possible, hoping that I might see his face. But that was stupid.

“I will see you tomorrow then.” And before I could say another word, I heard a click and the screen turned black.

My shoulders slumped once I realized that that was all he had to say to me. I would be seeing him soon though, that was the main thing! After all this time, I would see L again.

I was skipping all the way back to my dorm.

“Why are you so happy?” Came Mello’s voice from behind me.

He had caught me off guard and I fell mid skip, but that didn’t ruin my mood. I hugged him as tight as I could.

“I’m going to catch Kira with L!” I cheered, “I’m leaving tomorrow.”

“Bye then, Scar.” He huffed as he turned to walk back into his dorm. Scar was my nickname.

I carried on skipping and once I returned to my own dorm I began packing the few possessions I had while explaining everything to Near, who was making a tower of dice.

A few minutes later, I added a picture of Mello, Matt, Near and I to my bag and zipped it up. I got into bed early that night, I had to be up at seven the following morning, and I didn’t do mornings.

The sound of my alarm clock pierced the early morning silence. I quickly got washed and dressed before grabbing my bag and heading for the door. Before I left, however, I wrote on a scrap of paper ‘I’ll miss you. – S’ and balanced it on Nears face so that he couldn’t miss it. I opened the door as quietly as I could and stepped out.

I was nearly out when I saw Mello by the front door, eating chocolate as usual. He gave me a look that was hard to define. Before he even had a chance to blink, I had grabbed the chocolate bar out of his hand and took a bite. I giggled at how angry he looked before opening the door.

“I’ll miss you.” I said before running out and getting into the taxi that was headed to the airport. It was great that I would be seeing L again, but I hated having to leave my friends. I would try to contact them as much as possible, but I was going to be very busy.
