3. A Place to Stay and a New Friend

The train stopped at its last station in Mullingar, Ireland. I hesitantly stepped off of the train, hoping Dan wouldn't be here waiting for me. I was exhausted from all of the running and not being able to sleep without having to relive painful memories and from worrying so much about Dan finding me. My stomach was rumbling and I realized that I hadn't eaten anything for hours. I walked out of the train station and wandered around the town trying to find the nearest restaurant. After a few minutes I found a place called Nando's. I walked in and sat down at a small empty table. I looked at the menu and chose something that wasn’t very expensive. I didn’t have a lot of money with me. A small brunette waitress came over to take my order.  “Welcome to Nandos, my name is Sydney. What can I get for you?”  “Um, I’ll have the veggie burger with a glass of water.” I replied. She wrote down my order and said, “Ok. I’ll bring that right out for you.”  She started to walk away but then she stopped and turned back to me, smiled and said, “Oh, and by the way, welcome to Mullingar.” Then she walked away. A few minutes later, she came back with my food.  “Is it that obvious that I’m not from around here?” I asked, a little embarrassed.  She looked back at me and smiled. She sat down at my table and said, “When you’ve lived somewhere for your whole entire life, you always seem to know when there is someone new in town. It’s almost like a sixth sense sort of thing. So, what’s your name? Where are you from? What brought you here?” “My name is Paige. I’m from Whitegate. And I’m here because...” I didn’t know how to finish my sentence. I couldn’t tell her that I was running away from my abusive father. I needed to think of an excuse. And fast. “Um, I just felt like going on a road trip to see what this place was like.” I smiled through my horrible lie. I have always been a terrible liar. “Really?” she asked. She probably didn’t believe me. I just smiled again and nodded. “That’s cool. I’ve never left Mullingar. How long are you staying? Are you staying with family or in a hotel?” she asked. “Um, actually I don’t have a place to stay tonight.” I said, looking down at my food. I hadn’t even thought of where I was going to stay. I don’t think I have enough money to stay at a hotel. “You could stay with me if you want. I have an extra bed in my room. It used to be my sister’s bed, but she just moved away for college.” she asked, with a big smile on her face. “I couldn’t do that. I can’t just come in to your house and use your stuff. It’s fine, I’ll find somewhere to stay tonight.” I said back. I’ll probably just find a park bench to sleep on tonight, I thought to myself.  “If you’re thinking of finding a park bench to sleep on or a tree to sleep under for tonight, I wouldn’t recommend it. There are so many creeps out at night and it’s supposed to be cold tonight. Whether you like it or not, you are going to stay at my place tonight. I’m not letting you sleep outside.” She said standing up from the table. “My shift is over in 30 minutes. You finish your food and then I’ll come back out and we’ll go back to my place together.” Then she walked away. I smiled down at my food. At least I have a place to stay tonight. And a new friend.

I had finished my food a few minutes before Sydney walked out of the back room. I stood up and put my jacket back on. “Ready?” she asked as she walked up to me. “Yeah, I guess.” I replied. “Ok, let’s go. My car is just around the corner.” We walked outside and got in her car.  It was already a little chilly outside. I’m glad that I won’t be sleeping outside tonight. We drove for about 5 minutes to get to her house. We pulled up to her house and walked in. A lady, who I’m guessing was Sydney’s mum, was sitting at a little round table in the middle of the dining room. “Hey Syd. Who’s this?” her mum asked, smiling over at me. “Mum, this is Paige. She’s new here and she needs a place to stay, so I told her that she could use Taylor’s old bed. Is that alright if she stays with  us?” Sydney asked. Then her mum stood up and said, “Of course it’s alright, Stay as long as you’d like.” Sydney then showed me upstairs to her bedroom. Like she had said, there were two beds, both were full sized. Her room was large compared to my old one. She had pictures of who I guessed were her friends and family and some posters and other decorations around her room. “You can use this bed right here.” she said, pointing to the bed on the left side of the room. I set my stuff down on the bed and said, “Thanks again Sydney, for letting me stay here. It means a lot.” “You’re welcome Paige. I would never let you sleep outside. Especially since it’s your first night here. Friends don’t let friends do stupid things.” she said back to me smiling. We both got into our pajamas and got in our beds. Sydney turned off the lamp that was in between our beds. “Tomorrow, I am going to show you around town. I’ll be like your own personal tour guide.” she said to me. “Can’t wait. I want to try to look for a job tomorrow also. I need to make some money so I can get my own place soon.” “There is an opening as a hostess where I work. We’ll stop there tomorrow and you can talk to my boss, Melissa.” she said to me. “Ok, thank you. Night Sydney.” I whispered to her. “Night Paige.” she whispered back. I stared at the ceiling for a little longer and thought about everything that has happened today and what is going to happen tomorrow. Then I slowly drifted off to sleep.
