6. Chapter 6

“Your middle name is Edward?” Darcy quietly spoke as we walked down the street to her house. She was looking down at her feet with her hands tucked into the pockets on her brown leather jacket.

“Yea?” I questioned “Why?”

“Oh it’s just that, that’s my dad’s middle name.” She shrugged. That’s a little odd, if Darcy said our dads used to be friends and now they won’t even speak to each other then why would I have the same middle name as the guy my dad hates? I thought.

“What’s your middle name?” I asked her

“Johannah.” She replied. I stopped walking and just stood there, things were getting really weird between our parents. “What?” she asked turning around the face me.

“Uh.” I coughed then began to walk again. “Nothing, it’s a beautiful middle name.” I tried to cover up. Darcy didn’t say any more as we both began to walk silently to her house.

“Looks like dad is either working late or he’s at the pub.” Darcy sighed. “Either way I guess he’ll be home late, shocker.” She mumbled. “Well I guess I should let you go.” She said looking up at me. “You really need to work things out with your dad.”

I clenched my teeth I really didn’t want to speak with him right now. “I don’t need to do anything, he is the one that needs to work things out.” I bit back.

“Well you did get mad at him, give him time.” She reasoned “He’ll tell you when he’s ready.”

“It’s been nineteen fucking years!” I yelled. Darcy flinched back in shock. “Nineteen years.” I repeated “And he still hasn’t gotten over it.”

“Lucas you ha-.”

“I need to go.” I said coldly before turning on my heal and walking away, I knew I shouldn’t have taken that out on Darc I really couldn’t care right now. When I reached my house mum was standing on the porch, phone in hand as she paced back and forth. “Mum?”

“Your father left and I can’t, get a hold of him.” She said frantically. I looked around for his car and spotted it in the driveway which only meant one thing; he was at the pub. I turned around and began heading down the road. “Where do you think you’re going?” mum spoke.

“Do you want dad back or not?” I said angrily. Mum looked taken back but gave me a hard glare. I shrugged it off and began looking for the closest pub.

I sighed frustrated when I had walked into the fifth pub down the street and there was still no sign of my dad. I took a seat at a counter stool and ordered a beer. The place was quiet, mostly full of older men having a drink after work. “Why so glum chum?” someone asked taking a seat on the stool beside me and waving over the bar tender. A tall blonde in her early twenties came over. “I’ll take a beer.” The guy said. The girl wrote down his drink then proceeded to give the order to a guy across the bar serving up drinks.

“Just frustrated is all.” I shrugged swirling the half empty glass around the table. I took a look at the guy sitting next to me; he had a head of curly hair, the front of his hair pushed back from his face.

“Things are tough at your age.” He nodded. “But I must say you have it easy.” Who is this guy and who does he think he is? How would he know what my life was like? “I left home at the age of sixteen. At the age of seventeen I was traveling around the world.”

“Sounds like you had the life.” I mumbled. The girl came back with his drink and slid it in front of him also sliding a paper which I assumed was a receipt. I watched as the guy took the paper and flipped it over revealing a phone number, common this guy had to be in his forties. He smirked shaking his head and shoved the piece of paper in his pocket.

“Oh I did have the life.” He commented taking a swig of his drink. “But nothing beats losing a best friend.” He sighed. “One stupid rumor and its bye, bye friendship.”

Just then the door burst open I swirled around in my chair to see a very angry looking Louis. “I think this is my queue to go.” I said standing up on my stool. The guy sitting next to me looked at my dad in shock as he watched my father marc right up to me.

“You should not be here.” dad growled.

“I came looking for you.” I defended looking him straight in the eye.

“I can take care of myself.” He said

“Ya well think about mum, she is sitting at home worried sick about you because you won’t answer your damn phone!” I shouted.

“I can take care of my own damn self!”

“Apparently not!”

“Get out of here.” he glared.

“Remember when I was six and you had that drinking problem.” I brought up. “Do you really want mum to go through that shit again dad, do you?”

“Go home.” He said just above a whisper.

“No.” I said crossing my arms over my chest.

“Lucas I mean it.” He said through clenched teeth. We stared at each other for quite some time neither one of us breaking eye contact.

“Fine but if you want to drink away your life like you were doing when I was a kid then by all means do it, just don’t expect me to be there when you come back.” I said glancing to the side where the guy I was talking to sat but he was no longer there, he was no longer in the room actually. “I’m done with this bull shit.” I mumbled walking away from my father bumping his shoulder on my way out to the door. I ran my hands through my hair and made my way back home.

“Did you find him.” Mum asked desperately.

“He’s drinking mum.” I said with no emotion. I watched as mum bowed her head her long brown hair falling in front of her face. She opened the front door and walked right into the kitchen, without a word she grabbed a mug from the cupboard, knowingly I reached for the box of tea on the top shelf of the pantry, I filled the kettle and put it on the stove. “It’ll be ok.” I whispered.

“It’ll be ok.” She repeated whipping the tears falling down her cheeks, if there was one thing I hated the most it was watching my mum cry, it was heart breaking. When I was six and dad would come home late after a practice he would be wasted out of his mind, he wasn’t anything close to abusive but he got angry, a lot. My mum used to cry a lot, she was worried for my dad because she loved him.

“Mum?” I asked she was supporting herself up with the counter. The kettle went off and I took it off the burner, pouring the steamy hot water into the mug and placing the tea bag into the mug. “Mum.” I repeated handing her the cup of tea. “He’ll be fine.” I tried to assure her, but it’s hard to assure someone if you aren’t even sure yourself. For the first time in years I saw my mum break down.

“You don’t know that.” She said a steady stream of tears rolling down her face.

“You know what mum I don’t, but its dad he’ll be home safe.” My anger for my father right now was going through the roof and I wished so badly to just knock some sense into him.

“I just.” She sighed trying to collect herself. “I don’t get why he is like this all the time, he used to be so happy.” She said, tears trickling down her face. I came closer to her and wiped her face with the sleeve of my jumper before giving her a hug. I didn’t say anything because well I really didn’t have anything to say, but I knew that my mum needed someone and I was all she had.

“Mum if things worked out all those years ago with whatever happened to dad; do you think he would still be this way?” I asked

I felt her shrug in my arms “I really don’t know.” She sighed. “In a way things might be better, but they could have gotten worse.”

“What happened?” I asked but I expected the answer I got.

“It’s not my place to tell you.” I groaned in frustration letting go of my mum. I ran my hands through my hair and walked out of the kitchen without another word. At times like this when I was so worked up I would go for a run or kick a ball around but it was already past midnight so I did the next best thing that calmed me down. I sat in front of the grand piano in our living room and began to play. When I was little and my dad wasn’t constantly trying to get me to play footy he used to teach me to play piano, he only taught me one song; his favorite song to play. My fingers trailed across the keys, hitting each note of the song. “You have to know your father is very proud of you.” I heard mum say from behind me. My fingers froze on the keys.

“Well he has a funny way of showing it.” I said standing from the bench. “If you need me I’ll be in my room.” I said walking towards the stairs. I turned to look at my mum who was standing in the middle of the living room looking down it the mug in her hands. “If dad comes home, I don’t want to talk to him.” I said before disappearing up the stairs. I walked into my room slamming the door behind me. I walked passed my bed and to the sliding doors revealing a small balcony. I stepped between the boors onto the balcony taking a seat on a wooden chair. I didn’t do anything I just sat there.

I had been sitting outside for quite some time and I was beginning to see the sun rise in the distance. Deciding I wasn’t getting any sleep tonight I stood from my spot, my legs were cramping from not moving but I had finally calmed myself down. I opened the doors to my room and stepped into the warm room sliding the door shut behind me. I was startled when I saw someone sitting on the edge of my bed. “Dad?” I questioned. He was sitting there, his head in his hands. He looked up when I said something.

“Lucas, I’m so sorry.” He tried to apologize.

“Apology not accepted.” I said with no emotion crossing my arms over my chest.

“What do you want me to do; I really am sorry, I’ll get you anything.” He pleaded.

“You can’t just buy my love dad.” I said “You have to earn it, and right now you have lost all of it, in fact you lost it a long time ago.” I said coldly. “Try being a father for once dad, I don’t want anything, what I need is for you to act like a father and a husband. You know I haven’t seen mum cry in years, the last time I saw her cry was when you had a drinking problem.” I said dad bowed his head and clenched his fists. “She was crying last night because of you and you don’t even get that!” I began to shout. “You want me to live up to your dreams, you want me to play footy, but have I ever seen you come to one game, no. but do you know who does? Mum.” I said “If you want me to forgive you this time I suggest you get your act together.” I said walking out of my room and stomping down the stairs. I walked to the basement where another flat screen television sat propped up on the wall, there was a pool table, plenty of seating and a mini bar in the corner. I sat down on a couch and ran my hands through my hair.

I jumped awake when I felt someone sit on the edge of the couch. “Sorry.” Mum whispered.

“What time is it?” I asked

“Noon.” She replied

“Shit, I have school.”

“Watch your language and I already called the school you’re free for the day. Now your father tells me you need money for gas and he has told me about you getting a job, so get up and get dressed I know a few places you can apply.” She said patting my leg before getting up and walking up stairs. I groaned and pushed myself up from the couch.

***

“Mum.” I complained “I don’t want to work here.”

“Oh hush, it’s not that bad, now go.” She demanded shoeing me out the car door.

I walked up to the doors of a small bakery. “Welcome to Esses Bakery, how may I help you.” A middle aged woman asked from behind the counter.

“Um, hi I wanted to drop off a résumé?” I questioned.

“Oh sure thing sweaty just let me get the manager.” She chirped walking into the back room. I took a look around, the place was empty. Must be a slow day I thought.

“Hello I’m Todd.” A very tall man said extending his hand out towards me.

“Lucas.” I greeted giving his hand a firm shake.

“We don’t see many guys apply around here.” he commented. “Why are you interested?” he asked. I guess he was interviewing me right on the spot.

“I’m not going to lie, but my mum dragged me over here.” I admitted.

Todd chuckled and shook his head a smirk playing on his lips. “That’s exactly how I ended up here, how about this you come in Saturday afternoon, Say one-ish and I’ll put you with one of the younger girls” he winked. “And we’ll see how things go from there.”

“Sounds good.” I nodded with a smirk.

“I’ll see you then.” He said before patting me on the back and walking back into the kitchen. I shook my head and walked back to the car.

“So?” mum asked eagerly.

I exhaled blowing a puff of air out of my mouth. “One-ish on Saturday.” I said buckling my seatbelt.

Mum smiled as she backed out of the parking spot. “I knew you would get it.” She said ruffling my hair with her hands.

“Mum.” I whined shaking out my hair.

***

“Everyone meet at my house.” I called to the team, we had just won another game, our season was starting out great, and two wins in one week was a brilliant way to lift the spirits not only with the team but in the whole school. Before this season our school hadn’t been the strongest, I mean they still won games and played really well, but from watching their old game film it looked like they didn’t play well as a team.

“Oiy Tomlinson care to give me a lift?” Ryan asked.

“Who said you could come?” I asked raising my eyebrows. “You’re not on the team.”

“Oh common mate.” He begged.

I rolled my eyes. “Get in.” I sighed.

“Lucas!” I turned around to see my mum making her way towards my car. “You did great.” She smiled, even if I had a bad game she would still say I did great. “Are the boys coming over?” she asked.

“Yeup.” I replied.

“Does anybody need a ride?” she asked.

“I don’t know.” I shrugged. “If anybody needs a ride I have two seats and my mum has four.” I called a group of guys walked over asking for rides. Jason and Cameron took my last two seats and four other guys took the ones with my mum. I hopped into the driver’s side of my car and Ryan let out a low whistle. “What?”

“Your mum is smokin’.” He commented.

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“She’s really fit.” He continued.

“That’s my mum you’re talking about; I don’t want to hear it.” I mumbled.

“No I mean she’s really-.”

“Enough!” I demanded. “Talk about her all you want but not when I am around because that is my mum and I don’t want to hear it.”

Ryan smirked. “I’m just bugging you, why are you so grumpy.” He said punching me in the shoulder.

“He’s been like that all day.” Jason butted in.

“Nothing.” I simply answered. “Just shut up.”

“Lucas your mum is super fit.” O’Conner said once we were down in our basement.

“Don’t say that.” I said taking a cola from the mini fridge. “That’s my mum you’re talking about.”

“Well I’m just stating the truth.” He shrugged.

“Help yourselves.” I said ignoring all the guys talk about my mum.

“Pizza.” Mum called walking down the stairs with boxes of pizza.

Ryan immediately took the boxes from her hands. “Thanks Mrs. T.” he smiled

“Oh call me Eleanor.” She waved him off. “You boys behave.” She glared before walking back up stares. The room fell silent and I could tell everyone’s eyes were on her retreating figure.

“Quit checking her out!” I called once she was out of sight.

“But she’s just so.”

“Ahh I don’t want to hear it!” I said chucking a couch pillow at Cameron.

I turned on the television and flipped to the game. A group of guys were focused on a game of pool while others were eating pizza and mindlessly chatting amongst themselves. I sipped on my cola as I watched Getafe play Borussia Dortmund.

“Lucas!” I heard my mum call “Darcy is here.”

“Tell her to come down here!” I answered. My eyes still glued to the television.

“What’s up?” Darcy said taking a seat beside me.

“Just watching the game.” I mumbled. The room fell silent and I looked around the room, all the guys were just staring at Darcy and I. “What, have you never seen a girl before?” I asked rolling my eyes. The guys returned to what they were doing talking and whispering amongst themselves.

“Well this is awkward.” Darcy mumbled taking a slice of pizza.

“Sure help yourself.” I joked

“Will do thanks.” She smiled I smirked rolling my eyes.

“So what brings you here.” I asked stretching my arms above my head.

“Just wanted to see what you were up to.” She shrugged. “And I wanted to see if you were Ok.” I put my arms down and draped one around Darcy’s shoulder pulling her closer to me.

“Aw, how sweet you really care about me.” I cooed.

“Shut it Tomlinson I didn’t have to come here.” she scowled pushing herself away from me.

“I’m only kidding.” I smiled. “But I’m fine thank you.” I said genuinely.

“Good, that’s what I wanted to hear.” She smiled back.

“Now get over here.” I said pulling her back over to my side.

We continued to watch the game but I could tell Darcy got bored because she had positioned herself so her head was on my lap and her feet dangled over the armrest. She was laying there texting someone. She huffed resting her phone on her stomach where she then began to poke around at my face; poking my cheek, my nose, my chin. “You need the shave.” She said wrinkling her nose.

“What you don’t like the five o’clock shadow?” I said looking down at her with a smirk. She just wrinkled her nose and shook her head. I grasped her hand in mine and brought it up to my face whipping it under my chin and where I had little bits of stubble growing.

“Eww.” She laughed trying to pull her hand away. “Stop that’s so gross!” I laughed and let her hand go.

“You are free my child!” I joked.

“You are so weird, why do I hang out with you?” she said looking at me with disgust.

I mocked hurt. “Because you love me.” I smirked.

“No I don’t think that’s it.” She shook her head sitting up. “I think I should go now.” She said looking at the time.

“No.” I begged giving her puppy dog eyes.

“I’m sorry but it’s already ten o’clock and I still have homework to do that I didn’t do like three days ago.”

“You rebel.” I gasped.

“Shut up Lucas.” She said standing form the couch. “I really have to go though.”

“You’re leaving already?” O’Connor called from the pool table.

“Sorry.” Darcy apologized. “I’ll see you around though Charlie.” She called to O’Connor. Charlie nodded with a smile.

“Do you want me to walk you home?” I asked.

“Nah, I’ll be fine and you have people over.” She shrugged.

“It’s not like they will care.”

“Honestly.” She chuckled “I’ll make it home fine.”

“Text me when you get home, that way I know you made it home safe alright?”

“Yes my keeper.” She joked

“Atta girl.” I winked. “I’ll see you around.” I said as Darcy made her way up the stairs. She waved goodbye before disappearing. I turned around to see the guys all looking at me. “What do you want now?” I groaned.

“So, how is Styles?” Ryan asked wiggling his eyebrows at me.

“Fine.” I shrugged

“Fine that’s it?”

“Well what else would it be? We’re just friends.”

“You like her don’t you?” Jason butted in.

“No, I barely even know her.”

“And yet you let her into your house, and you act like you have known each other for ages.” Jason added

“She’s just easy to talk to and get along with.”

“Don’t even bother mate.” Ryan said putting his arm around me like he always does. “He’s in denial.”

“No I’m not, we’re just friends and that’s all.” I said pushing Ryan off of me.

“But do you care about her?” O’Connor asked

“Of course I do. But if any other girl was here and walking home alone I would care about them also.”

“That’s not my point; I mean do you really care about her?”

“I don’t understand where you are coming from.”

“Never mind.” He huffed. “You’ll understand what I mean when the time comes.” He said patting me on the shoulder.

“Who wants to go to the pub?” Cameron asked. A room full of cheers erupted.

“You guys go ahead; I think I’m going to stay here.” I said shoving my hands into my jean pockets.

“Suite yourself.” Ryan shrugged.

“Do you guys have rides home?” I asked

“Ah we’ll call a cab.” O’Connor waved me off.

“Oiy can I crash here tonight?” Mathews asked.

“Sure why not.” I shrugged.

We all trampled up the stairs onto the main floor. “You boys sound like a herd of elephants.” My mum said. She was sitting on a chair in the living room with her laptop. “You guys heading out?”

“Just going to the pub.” Ryan spoke up. Mum gave each of them a stern look

“You be safe.” She warned.

“We promise.” They all said in unionization. She nodded in acceptance.

“Well carry on then.” She said.

The guys all left leaving Jason and I behind. “Mum Jason is going to crash here for the night is that alright?” I asked

“Sure thing but you two have school in the morning.”

I nodded and turned to go up the stairs. “Lucas, a moment.” I heard my dad say. I cringed at the thought of having to face my dad again.

“I’ll meet you up there, my room is the third door on the left.” I said to Jason. He nodded in hopped up the stairs. I turned on my heal and headed into the living room where my mum and dad were sitting before I entered the room I received a message on my phone I quickly checked it.

Didn’t make it home, sorry a biker gang has capture me and I’m now being held hostage HELP! ;) –D

I smirked and sent a quick reply.

Oh well guess I’ll never see you again, it was nice knowin’ ya! –L

I slid my phone back into my pocket ignoring the buzz I received and took a seat on the edge of a chair resting my elbows on my knees.

“Lucas.” My father began leaning forward on the couch, he took off his glasses and looked me right in the eye. “Lucas I’m sorry…” he began and right then I didn’t want to hear his excuses. “I am not going to make up excuses this time, what I did the other night was wrong, and I admit I may not have acted like the father you hoped me to be, and I myself am ashamed because I promised myself I would never be that way, I am sorry I haven’t been there enough and I want you to know that I still support you in your football career.” I didn’t get it, he never has football wasn’t something I wanted to base my career off of. But I guess he is trying to make things up and I have to give him some points. I looked over at the television that was paused on the game. He had finished about a half an hour ago but my dad had obviously recorded it and he was about half way through the game.

“Is that tonight’s game?” I asked. Dad put his glasses back on and looked at the screen.

“Yes.” He replied

“Dortmund wins.” I said then pushed myself up from the chair.

“Why do you always ruin it for me?” he scowled.

“Try watching it on time next time.” I shrugged. Taking my mobile out of my pocket to read the message I had gotten a few minutes ago.

Good night Lucas Xx –D.
