5. Chapter 5

I picked up my phone, searching for Darcy’s number. The phone rang a few times before it was

answered. “Hello?” she asked

“Hey Darc, its Lucas.” I exclaimed.

“I know who it is.” She chuckled. “I have collar ID.”

“Right, well I was wondering, are you free tomorrow night?” I asked hoping she didn’t have plans.

“Um, yes?” she questioned.

“Great, would you come over for dinner?”

“Sure, but why?”

I continued to scroll through the pages and pages of articles about my dad. “Well I want to ask my dad a few questions, but I figure if you’re around he wouldn’t be so, harsh.”

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” She sighed. “I mean I think he’s onto me, he’s definitely suspicious.”

“Please.” I begged.

I heard her shuffle around a few things. “Fine.” She sighed. “What time?”

“Thank you so much, and I’ll pick you up, stay after school and I can get you, I’ll already by there for a footy match.” I explained.

“Okay.” She said shortly. “Hey Lucas?” She asked. I could hear the rustling of papers in the background. “Are you any good with maths?” she asked

“No.” I chuckled “I think I’m failing” I said honestly.

“It was worth a shot.” She chuckled.

“Darc, have you read some of these… what are they… Fan Fictions?” I asked scrolling down a very, very descriptive piece of writing. “Oh god.” I said. “I think I’m scarred for life.” I mumbled in which Darcy laughed.

“Oh boy, so that’s why you want me to came over, so you can ask him about his past.” She clued in. “And that’s nothing, you haven’t seen a fan fiction till you have read one about my father, they get pretty graphic.” She said.

He sat up kissing me, mumbling “Oh my god.” as he pressed his lips to mine. He pulled off the rest of his pants, still kissing me in the process. He moved my panties to the side, teasing my entrance with his tip. I couldn’t wait to ride him.” I read aloud. “What the hell…” I couldn’t help but stare at the screen in front of me. “Where do people come up with this? That’s just gross.”

Darcy laughed. “Apparently our fathers attracted some very hormonal teenagers.”

“Lucas, Dinner!” my mum called.

“Eyh, I’ll talk to you later.” I said closing my laptop.

“Yea sure I’ll see you tomorrow.” She exclaimed.

We said our goodbyes and I hung up the phone racing down the stairs. “I smell burgers.” I said walking through the kitchen just as my dad was walking through the back patio doors with a plate full of homemade hamburgers.  “Congrats dad, you didn’t burn them.” I laughed and he scowled at me.

“That would be because I made sure he watched them this time.” My mum said coming in from outside, closing the door behind her.

“I can barbeque a stupid burger.” He said “It happened once.”

“Oh honey, we are only kidding around.” My mum said getting the condiments out of the fridge. Burger night meant one thing, it was a game night. The three of us made our plates up and gathered around the television for the Footy match. “Hey Louis, I’m going to be a little late getting home tomorrow.” My mum said as she took a seat on the couch, pulling her laptop onto her lap. My mum was never really into watching footy, but she supported both my dad and I, she came out to all of our games and was always there in the crowd.

“What is that?” my dad asked turning the television on and flipping through the channels till he reached the sports section.

“I’m meeting.” She paused as if she was trying to find the right words. “Old friend.” She said.

“El.” Dad said giving her a look much the same as a warning.

“What.” She said innocently. Dad shook his head heaving a large sigh.

“So you’re going to miss my game?” I said. I was pretty disappointed it was my first game on a new team and she wasn’t even going to be there.

“There will be other games Lucas.” She said. I could tell she was sorry; the tone of her voice assured me. “But I haven’t seen her in a while and it would be really nice to just, you know have a girls day.” She shrugged.

“It’s fine.” I said focusing to the match playing on the screen. “It’s only one game.” I shrugged. “Oh mum.”

“Mmhm.” She mumbled. Scrolling through what was probably her twitter page.

“Can Darcy come for dinner tomorrow?” I asked. There was a clear chance she was going to say yes; she already seemed to like her.

She lifter her head from her laptop to look at me. “Of course.” She smiled. I could see my dad shift uncomfortably in his seat.

“I um.” He coughed. “I need to.” He paused just ah his phone rang. Digging through his pocket he pulled out his mobile, looking at the ID. “I need to take this.” He said lifting his plate from the coffee table as he pressed answer on his mobile while walking out of the room and probably into his office.

“Hey honey, I think I’m just going to take this into the kitchen.” My mum said suddenly. I nodded still watching the game. She picked up her stuff and left too.

I had finished my dinner and still nobody had come back. I lay sprawled out on the couch and just as I was drifting off to sleep someone jumped on top of me. “Get up, get up, get up!” I grumbled in response. “Wake up!”

“Dad.” I whined “What do you want?”

“Get up.” Was all he said as he got up off of me. I groaned sitting up on the couch.

“We need to talk about what we are going to do about you bucking off today.” He said. All playfulness was gone from his voice as he took a seat on the chair adjacent to the couch. I ran my hands through my hair and down my face. I though he had forgot and I was off the hook. “Now, I know that in a few days you are going to need money for gas, correct?” I nodded in response. “Great, well guess how you are going to get that money?” he asked I was afraid to know what he had planned. “You are going to get a job.” He said shortly.

“What!” I almost yelled “Dad this is so not fair.” I reasoned

“Y buck off, you take the punishment.” He said.

I stood from the couch “Take my car away then, I’ll walk to school.”

My dad stood up crossing his arms over his chest. “You either get a job or you are grounded.” He said sternly.

I exhaled sharply “Fine.” I said turning away and walking out of the house, slamming the door behind me. The cool breeze hit me as soon as I stepped out of the house. “Get a fucking job.” I mumbled to myself. “How the hell do I find a fucking job?” frustrated I began to take a walk down the road. I hadn’t realized that I had been walking for quite some time until my mobile rang. “Hello.” I answered

“Lucas where are you?” a worried voice asked

I had gone around two blocks and we now standing just outside my house. “I’m right outside mum.” I said.

“Well get in the house, your going to get sick, it’s raining.” she exclaimed. It wasn’t really raining; just spitting it wasn’t even a heavy rain.

“I’m coming.” I sighed making my way up to the house. I opened the front door and went straight into my room.

“Mum, where is my uniform?” I called as I ran down the stairs. I was already running late for school; like I was every morning.

“Right here!” she called running out of the laundry room with my bag already packed with my game cloths. “Washed and ready to go, lucky socks and everything.” She said giving me a kiss on the cheek.

“Thanks mum.” I smiled. “Now I’m going to be late.” I grabbed my bag and slung it over my shoulder.

“Good luck.” She called as I walked out the door.

“Thank you.” I called back

“Nice footy socks.” Jason laughed. We were getting ready for our game at Westminster Kingsway College and I was putting on my special pair of footy socks.

“What are you talking about Mathews.” I chuckled bending over to pull my socks over the shin pads.

“Who the hell wears tie-dyed footy socks?” He commented.

“I’ll have you know these are my special game socks.” I said. “You know, like a ritual.”

Mathews scoffed. “Whatever Tomlinson.” He said before funning out to the field to practice. Coach came by and eyed up my socks before shaking his head and returning to mark things down on his clipboard.

“Hurry up Tomlinson.” He ordered. I finished lacing up my slick blue cleats and made my way onto the field with the rest of the guys. We started our warm-up when the referee blew his whistle.

“Captions.” He called

“Tomlinson.” Coach called I looked over to him for direction. “You’re caption.” He said flicking his pen in the air in the direction of the referee. I walked to the center of the field meeting up with the caption of the other team

“Nice bruise.” The caption of the other team smirked. I took a good look at my opponent and realized he was the guy who gave me this bruise.

“You punch like a girl.” I snarled.

“That bruise says otherwise.” He said crossing his arms over his chest. I mimicked his action.

“Alright boys that’s enough, I want a fair game. This isn’t American Football.” The Referee butted in. “Westminster Kingsway College calls first.”

The coin was tossed into the air and landed freely on the turf. “Heads.” The referee called looking over to me.

“We’ll take first ball.” I said.

“Anderson, Tomlinson shake hands.”

Anderson extended his hand and gave it a firm shake. “May the best team win.” He said coldly. We made a small stair off before he retraced his hand turning away. I turned away and walked over to the rest of the team were now standing around the bench waiting for me to return.

“We have first kick.” I said once I reached the group.

“Great, O’Conner you start us off.” Coach said patting him on the back.

Our first line got into position. The whistle blew and O’Conner kicked it to his partner Evans. I was our mid field which meant that I had to take most of the blows from the infield, with precise moves and have a heavy eye in the ball along with the players around me. As soon as I was open Evans made a quick pass in my direction. My first handle on the ball was a little off but I straightened out heading down the field with Anderson right by my side. “Give it up.” Anderson called. I ignored him looking for another open player.

“Mathews!” I called the Jason who was already at the goal post. He came out a little ways where I was able to pass the ball in his direction. He caught it with ease and for a moment I thought he had it but the minute his head looked down at the ball the other team was able the steal the ball. “Head up Mathews!” I yelled

“Head up.” He repeated to himself. I made my way back down the field. Anderson currently had the ball and I was determined to win it back, catching up to him I noticed him struggling with keeping the ball inline, must have been a rocky receive. I swiftly hooked the ball and started back down the field. Mathews was at the net ready to make a goal. I made a quick pass to Wesley who carried it the rest of the way before making a pass to Mathews the easily scored our first goal. I smirked looking back at Anderson. Who had an angry look, eyes of determination?

We were in our last quarter of the game and we were both tied. I wanted to beat the smug look off Anderson’s face. I was taken off the field, something about making too many passes to Mathews who kept losing it on us. “Tomlinson, get out there, but no more passing to Mathews.” Coach said. “Wesley, you’re off.” Coach called Wesley and I traded spots.

“Look who’s returned.” Anderson said.

“Just shut up and kick the ball.” I barked.

The whistle blew and Anderson hoofed the ball into the air. I jumped for the ball blocking it with my chest letting it fall to my feet. I dribbled it down the field, Anderson hot on my heals. “Give it up.” Anderson chanted. I continued to ignore him. “It’s our game now give it up.” He said he was close, really close, and when I say close I mean we were bumping shoulders. “Give it up.” He repeated sticking his elbow out just enough for me to run right into it as he jabbed it right into my gut. The wind was knocked right out of me; I slowed up looking for an empty spot.

“Mathews.” I groaned. I was sure he couldn’t hear me but to my surprise I heard his call my name. With the last bit of energy I had I kicked the ball into the open field before stopping to hold my aching gut.

“Mess with me and you get the same in return.” Anderson called over his shoulder as he went to retrieve the ball. I prayed to go Mathews would get to it first.

“Tomlinson what the hell do you think you are doing.” Coach called from the side. I looked at him with a smirk, gave him a brief nod before watching the scene unfold. Jason reached the ball just a few seconds before Anderson, I watched as he carefully swiped the ball, kicking it easily between both of his feet. His head was held high as he crossed through each player like they were pylons themselves. He reached the goal post and gave it a hoof to the upper left corner. The ball skimmed the top of the goal post and landed safely behind the line. Just in time for the game to be over. “You got lucky Tomlinson.” Coach said coming up beside me. We watched as the team congratulated Jason on the first win of the season. “Good job Mathews.” Coach said when Jason joined Coach and me.

“See how important it is to keep your head up.” I said punching him in the shoulder.

“Thanks.” Jason smirked.

“Now let’s shake hands.” Coach said pushing us to the center of the field. We each lined up; I followed in the back and shook hands with every member on the opposing team till I reached the last member.

Anderson. “Good game mate.” I said with a smug grin holding my hand out to him. He looked at me in disgust before sending a punch to my shoulder.

“Sure.” Was all he said before walking away.

I shook my head and scanned the crowd of people leaving the field. “Lucas!” I turned around to see Darcy coming my way.

“Darc.” I smiled when she came up beside me. I put my arm around her shoulder. “You ready for tonight?”

We were all sitting around the table having dessert, shocker that my mum only makes desert when I have a friend over. For the most part my mum kept pestering Darcy, asking her all sorts of questions. I could tell Darcy was nervous but she was still doing pretty well, my dad didn’t seem too phased about Darcy, in fact he seemed to quietly accept her, there weren’t any weird glances like the first time he met her. I was sitting beside Darcy across from my parents. “So um dad…” I began. Dad looked up from his bowl of what was now just ice cream. “How did you and mum meet?” I asked curiously.

“We...” he coughed clearing his throat. “We met through a mutual friend.” He nodded.

“Mmhm, I see. And um who’s the friend?” I asked and I felt Darcy tense beside me, I put my hand on her knee giving it a slight squeeze.

“Just a mate.” He shrugged

“Mmhm, Dad how come you don’t tell me anything about your young adult years?”

“I do, all the time.”

“No, no. I mean when you were from the age of eighteen to twenty-four.”

“Let’s not talk about this right now.” He said through gritted teeth.

“And why not.” I fought back.

“Just drop it.” He said shaking his head.

“No.” I said standing from my seat. “I deserve to know what your life was like you don’t tell me anything.”

“Lucas I said drop it!” he yelled standing from his seat; the black chair he was sitting on flew back and slammed on the ground.

“Are you so ashamed of your past that you won’t tell me?” I argued.

“Lucas Edward Tomlinson I said drop it, and I mean it, not another word from you.” He said in a stern voice.

“Louis William Tomlinson, Lucas Edward Tomlinson, that is enough out of both of you.” My mum said standing from her seat. “Lucas, take Darcy home. We’ll talk about this later.” She ordered.

“Common Darc, Let’s go.” I said coldly. Darcy got up quietly.

“Thank you for the wonderful dinner Eleanor.” Darcy said sweetly.

“Come by any time

Sweetheart.” My mum smiled.

“Let’s go Darc.” I called.
