4. Chapter 4

“What happened to your face?” Ryan asked when I reached my locker.

“I got punched.” I smirked.

“For what?”

“For being thoughtful.” I said slamming the door to my locker.

“Wah, what’s with all the anger?”

“I’m just frustrated. I need to go.” I stated before slinging my bag over my shoulder and striding down the hallway.

“If you are going to buck off then I am too because I can’t let you get detention alone,” Ryan said catching up with me.

“Fine, but just shut up.” I said through gritted teeth as I exited the school doors, passing the guard office on my way down the stairs.

“Where are you going?” Ryan asked.

“What part of shut up don’t you understand?” I barked.

“The shut up part.” He joked.

“Ryan, I’m seriously not in the mood.” I warned opening the door to my car. I got in and started the engine just as Ryan closed the door on his side. “I need to go somewhere.” I stated backing out of my parking space. “You have David’s number, correct.” I asked Ryan.

“Yea?” Ryan asked curiously.

“Good, text him and tell him to meet us at the gates of his school.” I ordered. Ryan obliged and proceeded to text David.

“Done.” He said slipping his phone back into the pocket of his leather jacket.

"Good." I nodded.

"So is this about that Darcy girl?" he asked. I just ignored his question, tightening my grip on the wheel. "What happened between you two, why are you so hung up on this girl?" He asked.

That really made me think why did this bug me so bad? Why did I really care? "I really don't know mate." I sighed.

"You know what I think?" he said. "I think you fancy her."

"I do not." I argued.

"Lucas and Darcy, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I..."

"Bug off, I do not."

"Denial." He sang

"Why did I agree to bring you along?" I mumbled. And Ryan began to laugh. I pulled up to the gates of Westminster Kingsway College where David was sitting just outside. I parked on the curb and quickly got out. "Stay here." I ordered Ryan.

"Oh no, I'm not staying here." He said getting out of the car. "This place is packed full of girls."

"Fine, but I'm only going to be like a half hour tops, if you’re not out here by the time I leave, I'm leaving you here." I walked up to meet with David. "Do you know what class Darcy is in?" I asked as soon as I reached him.

"I do." he nodded.

"Great show me."

"Well hello to you too." David chuckled standing from the steps he was sitting on.

"Hey David, I'm sorry that was rude." I sighed running my hands through my hair.

"Oh, that's alright." David smiled. "Here let me show you where she is, she doesn't actually have a class right now." he explained leading me into the school. This was a huge school, very modern, loads of floors, and big windows. I followed him down a few hallways till we finally reached a door. "She's in here." he whispered pointing to the door. I looked through the door into a small dance studio. "She comes here when something is on her mind, she doesn't have morning classes today and she walked straight into here when she go to school." he explained.

"I thought she did hip hop." I stated, looking through the window, she was dancing, but she was dancing Ballet.

"She can do many types of dances, ballet is her thinking dance." he said. "Well I'll leave you to it." he nodded towards the door. "I better make sure Ryan doesn't get himself in trouble." he chuckled, patting me on the back before making his way down the hallway.

"Hey David." I called after him. David turned around.

"Yea?"

"Thank you." I smiled; David nodded before continuing down the hallway. I turned back toward the door; I quietly turned the doorknob opening the door. Darcy was so concentrated on her dancing that she didn't even notice me enter. I quietly took a seat in the corner of the room, I studied her as she continued to Pirouette before she lost her footing falling to the ground. I stood up stepping a little closer to her, her back was facing me. "Need a partner?" I asked.

Darcy turned around startled for a moment. “What, no.” she said standing from the ground, picking up her runners and t shirt, slipping the shirt over her head covering her stomach that was exposed.  “I need to go.” She mumbled scurrying towards the door. I hurried over closing the door just as she opened it. Her back was facing me as she heaved out a sigh. “I have class.”

“No you don’t.” I said smugly. “David told me you have no morning classes.” I stated. “Now why are you avoiding me?” I asked turning Darcy around to face me.

“Hi, I’m Darcy, Darcy Styles.”  She said bluntly.

“So…” I shrugged “What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked

“You don’t get it do you?”

“Obviously not.”

“I’m a Styles and you’re a Tomlinson.” She explained

“I am aware of our last names but I still don’t get what you mean.”

“Our dads don’t like each other.” She said slowly “If my dad finds out who you are god knows what he’ll do.”

“Well then let’s not tell him.” I shrugged “Simple.”

“No, not really, you look too much like your dad, well minus the chocolate brown eyes, and the bigger build.” She mumbled. “You look like the young Louis, with lighter hair.” She explained.

I sighed running my hands through my hair “well your dad doesn’t have to know.”

“What!” She practically yelled “I don’t lie to my father.”

“Well then I guess that’s it.” I sighed reaching for the door.

“No wait.” She said stopping me. “Yes.” She huffed I gave her a confused look. “Yes I need a partner, but not for this.”

“Go on.” I said crossing my hands over my chest.

“I need a partner for my Hip Hop, I have wanted to enter this competition for a while but I haven’t got a partner.”

“You know I was only kidding, right.” I said.

“Fine.” She sighed. “It was worth a shot.” She mumbled before picking her iPod up and putting on an old Ne- Yo song.

“I’ll help.” I blurted out before I could take back my words.

“Sorry what was that?” she asked

“I’ll do it, I’ll dance with you.” I stated. “How long do we have?”

“Well the competition is in May so, seven months.”

“And do you think that’ll be enough time?” I asked

“Probably not, but I just want to be there, to say I had been there, I don’t care if I place. If we place.” She corrected.

“Well I’m here now so what do you want me to do?” I asked pulling my jumper off and tossing it to the ground.

“Don’t you have classes?” she asked while she pulled off her t-shirt leaving her in just a hot pink sports bra and track pants. She pulled on a pair of Black running shoes and fixed her hair into a messy bun.

“Classes can wait.” I shrugged talking off my black Guns n’ Roses t-shirt. Darcy turned around facing me, her eyes scanned over me before a smirk played on her lips.

“Right, well let’s start with the basics.” She said standing beside me. “How about this one.” She said “To the right.” She stated before taking a step to the right. I repeated what she did. “Now again.” She said doing the same move again three more times. “Good, now do that to the left.” She said and I did as directed. “Great now kick with your Right foot.” She said kicking her heal to the ground. “And now left.” She said and repeated that four times. “Now walk it by yourself.” She said taking steps on the spot till she was facing the next wall. I followed her actions till we had repeated the same steps coming back in the position we had started in. “Congratulations, you now know how to do the Cupid Shuffle.” She stated.

“That’s all, oh common let’s do something a little more challenging.” I dared.

“Ok let’s see you do this.” She said before she began to moonwalk backwards, then sidewise all while keeping her upper half completely motionless.

“Um.” I coughed. “No.” I stated.

***

An hour had passed and I was already out of breath. “Oh it wasn’t that bad.” Darcy said handing me her water bottle. “You should be used to this hard work, you play footy.”

“This is a fucking workout!” I exclaimed.

“I know.” Darcy laughed.

I looked at my phone that had received a text from Ryan about a half an hour ago.

What’s taking you so long?-R

“Shit.” I mumbled “I’m sorry I have to go, I forgot Ryan was with me.” I apologized.

“That’s fine; I should get something to eat before class anyway.” She waved me off.

“When is our next practice?” I asked.

“Saturday, I’ll pick you up around seven.”

“A.M?” I said dumbfounded.

“That’s correct.” She said before opening the door. “You should go.”

I nodded and walked out the door. “See you around.” I called to Darcy from down the hall. I ran out to my car to find Ryan leaning on the driver’s side talking to a girl with long brown hair, she giggled at his pathetic attempt to be funny.

“Yea, this is mine.” Ryan bragged and I rolled my eyes chuckling to myself.

“Ryan, what’s up mate?” I asked pouting my arm around his shoulder like he does to me. It was funny because Ryan couldn’t even drive, he told me he had failed his driving test four times already and was probably going on his fifth this Friday. “Who’s this?” I asked looking at the girl he had been talking to.

“I’m Harriet.” She said with a very friendly smile.

“Why hello there Harriet, I’m Lucas.” I introduced myself. “So Ryan, you were going to drive me back to school right? I mean this is your car.” I teased.

“Right.” He said shortly. “Um, ok.” He said opening the door to my car and sitting in the seat. He paused for a moment and I smirked at Harriet.

“Looking for something?” I said dangling the keys in my hand.

“Oh, right.” He laughed nervously.

“Yea, get out of my car.” I said. And Harriet laughed. Ryan sulked and hopped out of the driver’s seat. “Sorry if my friend here was bothering you.” I apologized to the girl.

“Oh no worries, he was actually entertaining.” She smiled.

“Score!” Ryan said fist pumping the air. I rolled my eyes and hopped into the driver’s seat.

“Are you coming?” I asked Ryan.

“Yes I am.” He replied. “So um, I’ll see you later?” he asked the girl nervously.

Right away her face lit up as she smiled broadly. “Of course!” she exclaimed. Ryan looked at her in disbelief, like he had never had that reaction from a girl before. “Here’s my number.” She said before writing a number down on a piece of paper. She handed it to Ryan and whispered something in his ear before backing away and giving a small wave. Ryan nodded and proceeded to walk around to the other side of the car.

“You are really giving him a chance?” I asked.

“Might as well give him some hope, right.” She shrugged and I laughed.

“You are very smart.” I stated.

“I know.” She winked just as Ryan hopped into the passenger’s seat. “Well I’ll probably see you two sometime!” she said before giving a small wave.

“Sure thing!” I smiled before starting my car. She turned to walk into the large field where many people were enjoying the weather while it was still good, as it had cleared up since this morning.

“So what did that girl say to you?” I asked Ryan.

“She told me to hang out sometime.” He mumbled as her absentmindedly typed her number into his phone. “What took you so long?” he asked typing away on his mobile.

“Well I finally got Darcy to talk to me.” I explained. “Something about our dad’s not liking each other. I really don’t know the details, but then she asked me if I would be her partner for this competition, I told her I couldn’t but the look on her face when I said no, I just couldn’t take it so before I knew it I was strung into a hip hop duet. I don’t even know how to dance.” I explained “What have I gotten myself into?” I mumbled.

***

“Hey want to go to the pub on Friday night?” Ryan whispered from across the row of desks we were sitting at, it was after school and we had landed ourselves a detention for bucking off.

“I don’t know. I have to be up early on Saturday.” I contemplated.

“No talking.” The teacher on duty said, there were too many teachers to remember who was who and I had no clue who this one was, she didn’t seem very old, in fact none of the teachers seemed old at all, they were all fairly young, I mean you had some of the older teachers that have been here for a while, like coach. But even then there still wasn’t many.

Just five more minutes I said to myself as I looked at the clock for what seemed like the hundredth time. “I am so going to be late for practice.” I mumbled leaning back on my chair, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Coach is going to work you so hard for being late you know that right?” Ryan said.

“Or even worse” I said “He could kill me.”

***

“You’re late!” coach yelled.

“It will never happen again.” I defended.

“You’re darn tootin’ it will never happen again.” At first I thought he was going to let me off easy, that he was going to give me a warning and tell me to never do it again. “Ball duty, after practice.” He said before blowing his whistle in my face. “Ten laps Go!” he said turning back to the rest of the team who were practicing their dribbling. Together the team was good, but as I studied each player individually while making my way around the field I could point out the stronger players, one player intrigued me; Jason Mathews. I watched as he struggled with dribbling the ball down the field, his hardest part was through the cones, he was one of our best shooters, but unless you passed it to him right by the net he was useless at bringing it down the field, he was one of the fastest runners on the team and could make it to the goal post in a matter of seconds. As my laps for fewer and fewer I couldn’t help but come up with why he was having so much trouble.

At the end of my last lap I jogged to the field where Jason was. “Hey Mathews, try slowing it down a little bit.” I said coming up next to him. He did as told, Jason started a slow jog as he kicked the ball down the field with the inside of his feet, but he was still having trouble keeping the ball in line. I caught up with him. “Try taking smaller kicks, like this.” I said demonstrating with a stray ball.” Through the corner of my eye I could see coach standing on the sidelines, arms crossed over his chest, as he studied my every move, not once did he take his eye off me. “It’s not a race mate, just take it slow.” I explained. Jason who was on the verge of losing his breath nodded and took my advice, dribbling the ball a little ways down the field. “Head up!” I called after him and he raised his head to look at what was in front of him, I fallowed close to him before picking up speed, as soon a Mathews looked down I was able to hook a right and easily capture the ball. “Head up, Eyes on your opponent at all times.” I said picking up the ball and handing it over to Jason. “Try again Mathews.” By the end of practice Jason was getting a hang of handling the ball, the rest of the team had started a game of scrimmage but I stayed with Mathews and practiced with him. It was drizzling and we were all wet with rain and sweat by the end of practice.

“You’ve got ball duty Tomlinson.” Coach called after me as everyone was leaving the field, a few of the guys snickered as they walked past me. I turned around, picked up the mesh bag and proceeded to shove the balls that were sprawled out around the field into the bag. “Good job out there.” Coach said when I returned with a bag full of balls, he was carrying a hand full of pylon cones. “You did a good job helping out Mathews.”

I shrugged. “I couldn’t bear watching him struggle so bad with that damn ball.” I helped coach bring the equipment to the shed before leaving.

“We’ve got a game tomorrow against Westminster Kingsway College. Don’t be late.” I joked

“I promise I won’t.” I nodded.

***

“What’s this a hear about you skipping class?” I heard my dad ask as soon as I walked through the door.

“I, um, I missed on class.” I said nervously, the last time a bucked off my dad gave me a huge lecture.

“What could have possibly been the reason for you to miss school, you realise you have to keep your grades up to be on the footy team.”

“I know dad, and it will never happen again.” I said running my hands through my hair.

“You’re right it won’t.” He said crossing his arms over his chest; it was a strange vision of Déjà vu. My dad and coach were exactly the same. “Now go get showered and changed, dinner is in an hour.” He said before heading into the kitchen where I presume my mum was. My leg muscles ached as I dragged myself up the stairs and into the bathroom down the hall.

After my shower I changed into a pair of sweat pants and a plain white tee. I sat on the edge of my bed with my laptop on; curiosity got the best of me. Darcy’s comment about our fathers knowing each other was burning a hole in me. Cautiously I typed the letters of my father’s name into the search bar.

Louis William Tomlinson.
