Circle of Life

This play was written in 2009. An improvised version of this play was staged on the 22nd of December, 2009 at the school where I was teaching, then.

P.S: This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents are the results of my imagination or have been used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events/ locales/ persons- living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

Narrator: Abhimanyu and Harpreet are getting married. Anjana got married to a rich businessman a couple of years back. Abhimanyu had turned into a workaholic after that. Harpreet was a beautiful, intelligent and most importantly-rich, girl. So here is a scene from their post marriage reception.

GUEST1: Abhimanyu is a sensible guy. We all know he was in love with Mr.Bhalla’a daughter, Anjana.

GUEST2: Poor guy, he has had a tough time after his father’s death.

GUEST1: They were literally bankrupt. Hats-off to him. He has proved to be an ideal son and brother.

GUEST2: But look the devil is going to be rich again. Prince- turned beggar-turned-Prince again. What kismet!

GUEST3: Leave it man! Look everyone’s dancing.

GUEST4: Yeah they are doing Bhangra after all the Gujju has married a Sikh girl. Come lets watch.

Dance 8: Bhangra

Narrator: Well as you can see, our Abhimanyu got married and recently his wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. So we are back to where we began. The circle of life continues. In a couple of years his daughter will get married. He’ll be a middle-aged man then. Then he’ll be an old-grandfather and when his daughter’s children will get married, if he is alive, he’d be so old that he’d hardly be able to understand the world around him. He will enter his final phase of life- extreme old age or second childhood. Life goes round and round and round.
