Circle of Life

This play was written in 2009. An improvised version of this play was staged on the 22nd of December, 2009 at the school where I was teaching, then.

P.S: This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents are the results of my imagination or have been used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events/ locales/ persons- living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

Narrator(philosophical): How time passes. Our little Abhimanyu is now 12 years old. Something seems to be wrong in his paradise. Jignesh, 37, is lying on bed. Rekha and Abhimanyu look distressed. The doctor is looking at Jignesh’s reports. Lets see what the problem is.

Doctor (to Rekha): He has had a hypertension attack which means that his Blood Pressure is very high and we need to do something about his cholesterol.

Rekha (worried): I don’t know what to do. He is in the shop from 10 in the morning till 11 at night. Business is not running smoothly.

Jignesh (sorrowful): What to do Doctor!!!! With the popularity of designer jewelry and the coming of foreign brands, old –fashioned jewelers like us are suffering. I do not have the resources to expand my business. I’ve incurred so many losses in the last couple of years. There are so many worries and anxieties.

Rekha (concerned): Besides, he never controls his diet. He hardly exercises and eats anything and everything that comes his way.

Jignesh (jokingly): Why does a human being earn? To eat good food!

Doctor (jokingly): Yeah! and also to pay the doctor's fee

(All laugh – except Abhimanyu, he is scared that something might happen to his doting father)

Rekha (worried again): So what should we do doctor? How will his health improve?

Doctor(matter-of-fact): Yoga. Yoga is the only solution. It will help him loose weight and also relieve him of stress.

Rekha (enthusiastic): Hey that’s great. Every morning at around 7 a.m, a group of people gather at the park opposite our house, to do Yoga. I have actually seen people losing weight in just two months. Jignesh’s illness is a wake up call. We’ll go there tomorrow.

Doctor(gaily): Good that’s the spirit! So you better join the Yoga classes, Jignesh. Come for your next check-up after 15 days. Goodbye.

Jignesh (relaxed): Yes doc I will. Thanks. Bye.
